My weather memory goes back to the 60's! The whole pattern appears to have been uprooted. Back then, we didn't expect to see the first cyclone before the last week of January! But from then until the end of April anything could happen, and it quite often did! A common place for cyclogenesis of Coral Sea cyclones was Milne Bay at the S.E. tip of PNG. From there, they usually traced the characteristic parabolic curve to end up in the North Island of New Zealand. That is unless the storm was diverted into Q'ld or New Caledonia. This new earlier pattern is unfamiliar to me, having been living overseas for many years. This morning I noticed that the MJO will be over the Coral Sea for a few weeks, so that may help get things moving, esp. when the expected southeasterly surge moves northwards up the coast.
