A Corner of Home (Sakura Con 2018)

SPOILERS for In This Corner of the World*
Last minute amv entry I did for Sakura con. I wasn't planning on entering but I was asked too so I needed to up up with something quick and why not make people cry XD Anyways the story is basically about a life of girl growing up. dealing with arranged marriage, in-laws and continuing her passion in art and storytelling.

It's incredible how in this movie such cruel ,traumatizing and unfair things happen to the characters and yet the movie as a whole is by no means just a depressing or melancholic experience, but in fact an inspiring and uplifting one. This is one of those movies that, if everyone on earth watched it, the world would be a better place.

I highly recommend the manga version rather than the movie version. It's deeper and explains the feelings better (because the movie has cut many little stories that makes the manga a masterpiece - so sad that there is a very important story having been cut). In my opinion, I'd like to read the manga, watch the movie's shot scenes (on youtube) and listen to the movie's music. The songs are so great too!

I hadn't heard of this anime until I saw this (which is normal for me and your videos!) but oh man, this is so beautiful and tragic and incredibly powerful, you did justice to this movie. Harumi's sad scene, almost silent in the film, left me stunned for a long time. But in that scene in this video, the song was so sad and powerful that it seemed to embody the emotions I was feeling at the time. Thank you.

SPOILER BELOW It’s a sweet/sad irony that moving away from her family to get married is what saved Suzu’s life from the Hiroshima atomic bomb. I have watched the movie and read the manga, and in the manga there are side notes written near the center of the inner binding that explains that during those years of the war many women suffered the stress and malnourishment of wartime food rationing, preparation, and safety protocols to the point that lots of young married women were not getting pregnant despite spending time with their husbands. Suzu at first thought she was pregnant because she lost weight and her appetite but turned out not to be and there is talk about her presumed infertility. Even though it does not definitively confirm Suzu cannot ever get pregnant (rather than the characters incorrectly presuming it to be the case) I suspect that in the years after the war she will eventually become pregnant. She was only 18 on her wedding day and 19 by the end of the story.
