Hi Grace, the fish were whitebait. I live in Hastings and people were scooping up the fish and putting them back into the sea, there were millions of them all along the beach, with the sea being blackened with huge amounts of mackerel jumping in and out of the sea also. It was amazing to watch. Apparently this occurred for 100 miles along the coastline.

Jan my parents live in Hastings also and this weird phenomenon occurred on a day I was visiting them. On talking to the neighbours they said it happens at least once a year along the Sussex coastline, so strange and can’t seem to find out why !

Glad you enjoyed Cornwall, I'm born and bred Cornish, and yes you pronounced Godrevy correctly! And Godrevy is about 3 miles from where I live, it does have the most beautiful sunsets, also loved by surfers. :-)

Haha!about the fish they are whitebait the mackerel chase them in to eat them,however they chase them in so far and tight the sea looks like it’s bubbling when there jumping,they all wash up on the shore,we go round and collect them,they are delicious!

The fish are whitebait! Mackerel swarm and push them toward the shore to make them easier to catch. I live on the coast and this has happened to me whilst I was swimming the water! Everyone was rushing to the beach and scooping out mackerel with bags and nets and grilling them straight away on disposable bbqs.

I actually went to the beach on the train today after seeing you at the beach yesterday, had a solo day date with myself (also inspired by you) just a bucket and spade and a pair of flipflops, was amazing, so good to feel the sand in my toes.
