#ThirdCoastCraftsman I'm currently 33, did 11 years in the Canadian air force, currently studying for an engineering degree, and realized a year ago my heart wasn't in it. So I've started slowly getting back into my passion and where I truly know my heart is, carpentry/woodworking. It's extremely motivating watching you speak of pretty much the exact pattern I'm going through. Ill be building my shop come fall, and cannot wait to grab my coffee, start my fire stove, and build things with my hands every single day. Thank you, just shows me if you can, I can.

What was that tool?? I'm a big fan of hand tools. I finally resorted to power tools to get ANY kind of accuracy, but I admire the heck out of anyone who can get such great results with hand tools. (And I still use some of those techniques, even with power tools!) And I'm also a fan of Japanese joinery and old-time timber joinery, so I loved this episode. Anyway... At 17:15 you begin relieving the edge of a board with a tool I've never seen before. At first, I thought it was a cabinet scraper held to a block of wood with finger pressure. But between 17:17 and 17:18 there's a great picture of the bottom of the tool. It looks like a long sheet of metal with several large holes, and a curved end that comes up just short of the wooden block. What the heck is that tool?? :__) And of, course, another great job...
@ThirdCoastCraftsman3 жыл бұрын
That’s just a block of wood with some sand paper on the bottom 😁

It has become my mission, to try and build proper hand tool skills. I've done carpentry on and off since my early teen years. The progression has always been more modern tools and methods if building things. I run a big cnc in a cabinet/furniture shop. With it I can recreate just about anything with 3 dimensional perfection. But it lacks the soul of something crafted with hand tools, by a true craftsman. It's a strange juxtaposition how we live in the information age, but have managed to lose the knowledge these craftsmen built over lifetimes. The kind of knowledge that took so many generations, adding the pieces they discovered. That progression of learning from your father, what he learned from his father, and so on. I think its a beautiful thing. Amd a shame that it is almost extinct.
