3x is three batteries. Same configuration as many Hallmark ornaments that take button cell batteries. They stack in there with the flat side on the spring.

The battery looks like either a cylinder battery as you said, or to stack watch batteries, they wouldn’t go sideways like you had shown...

Think the 3X means stack 3 of the LR44 on top of each other. Have had to do this with some older calculators.

Take your doll into a batteries Plus store (if you have them) they should be able to look and Id what battery you need. Or try stacking the batteries.. mom loves solar lights and often they are stacked in together

No the smaller disk battery is the right thing, 3x stands for 3 of them back to back in the slot. The LR44 looks like it might not be wide enough but it’s hard to tell.
