Great vid Bobby and nice catch for both of you. I can't wait to sail across the big blue and catch fish from the sea for din-din. When someone asks me what the answer to life is...my answer is one word! BALANCE!!! Balance in all things! As far as should you or should you not wear a life vest and/or use the jack line while under sail...well, there are many thoughts that ramble through my mind. First of all I'm a total safety nut and always have been. So please take that into account. BUT...That doesn't mean I'm not all about fun. I own a hiking club and almost all of our treks are off trail and X-treme. People here will tell you stories about some of the hikes I've put together knowing some of them are extremely intense. BUT, had we not been prepared for the worst, people would have died on my watch. What I'm saying is..as a sailor and captain of a vessel, you should be setting an example for your crew and be very concerned about them as well. Some channels like "Two Afloat Sailing" wear a life vest at all times under sail. Then there are others, no names mentioned, who don't even have life lines. And last but not least, I've seen sailors in the dingy with it wide open at 30 mph with their hands flailing in the air just waiting for the lower unit to hit a fish or log and send him and his passengers flying out of the dingy. It's always funny till someone gets hurt. I've been an avid boater since the age of 17 and am now around 60. When I purchased my last power boat to go from the yacht club to the island a few miles away every weekend, I knew what the rules of boating were and how to handle a boat. But guess what? My girlfriend didn't have a clue So, I lovingly requested she took a boating safety class with me so she knew what to do if something happened to me. In my situation, I feel it's far less likely that I or anyone would fall overboard because we are NEVER on deck under way. So, my thought is this! At the very least...anyone up on deck when under way should have a life vest on and completely secured (not just draping around them) and be strapped into a jack line. Also, a minimum requirement I would suggest is to also have one on and be strapped in while in the cockpit at night alone on a night shift. In the end...you're a big boy! But don't get into a situation where something bad happens in order to make you realize AFTER THE FACT that you should have done something differently. Not only for your own life, but your crew and those you love. It's impossible to be TOO SAFE! In ending...I also realize we can't cover all the basis and there has to be that balance I spoke of in the beginning. So pick and chose carefully while still enjoying life. Luv ya man! PEACE OUT! Ü

Bobby, on Safety - I'm right there with ya. When I captain any boat especially my own I look after everyone's safety first. And everyone knows it's bad when I put on my lifevest, and really bad when I jack in. 2 or more I instruct man overboard before we set off. Show them how to put her into the wind and stall it out. Never tell them to start the engine. Just stall the boat and throw the horseshoe. Sailing solo though, I'll drop an 80' drag line and wear the life jacket ANY time I leave the cockpit. No matter how nice the weather is. I had a knock down about 6 years ago and wasn't jacked or wearing a jacket. I had only an arm and most of my leg on the boat. Scared the piss outa me. Breeze came from NOWHERE. Was less than 10kts and I had full canvas out. Then some 40kt+ blast came through. Temp dropped like crazy. Not a cloud in the sky. WAS ODD! Since then....

My thoughts are you do you and I will do me. You are a grown man and know when you need to be using safety equipment. Middle of the Pacific all alone and cruising between islands in the Bahamas is very different. The equipment needed is also. Best of luck and I hope that the safety equipment is never needed regardless of you using it or not.

Hi, I can understand all the concern with life preservers and safety lines. I would not want to wear them all the time myself. Could y'all possibly... on a fair day with the crew, do some training drills that test what happens when someone falls overboard while sailing. How hard would it be to turm the boat around while underway? What forms of communication can be used on board during emergencies?
@stoneshrink
@stoneshrink 6 жыл бұрын
You asked for a comment about safety gear. I think the most important safety system is the one on top of your shoulders. I've never seen you take needless risks, which is a long way of saying you're the best judge on whether or not what you're doing is safe. Add to this, you seem to like each other so there it is. Intelligent sailors wear life preserving gear when it is appropriate to do so. They know when it is not necessary. Having stated that, some people are better off wearing the stuff all the time. Great video. Loved how you showed the almost glass surface way out in the middle of the ocean. Hard to believe it can happen, but gorgeous when it does. It's too bad YT won't allow the filleting of the tuna. I mean, we must live in a huge snowflake world where that might offend someone. It's food! There is NOTHING better than catching your own food - be it fish, deer, moose or whatever. It's fresh dangit! :)
@roadrashray9416
@roadrashray9416 6 жыл бұрын
I'm a little confused by Bobbies statement that YT won't allow fish filleting to be shown on vids published on YT. Over the years Delos has published many vids showing fish being killed by slitting the gills and many steps in the process of cutting the fish up for eating. Extensive fish harvesting on Delos in the Indian Ocean. Check out Delos Ep 92 starting at 9:10. It shows several fish being killed and filleted and diced for eating. Sorry, for some reason I could not cut and paste the vid here. There are dseveral other delos vids showing killing and cutting up of fish. Maybe I am missing some subtle nuance of the process, otherwise it seems ok-roadrash

I was thinking the same, but they have changed their rules recently..............perhaps you heard about all the drama with firearms channels. I know you do not have the speed of a Volvo Ocean 65, but do try to alter your track to sail with the clouds to avoid getting becalmed under them? Also, do you have a extendable spinnaker pole to keep the sail from collapsing? Cheers and best of luck on the rest of your journey to Thailand.

in the cockpit of the boat a life jacket may or may not be necessary. If you are up on deck I would never do it without a waist harness. Just a thought guys, I noticed that judging by the direction of your burgee (I.e. Stars and Stripes) you were sailing off the breeze (Around 130-140 apparent) and you actually mentioned that you were sailing downwind. If you reef or furl some of the headsail in before the main, it actually means that the centre of lateral resistance (AKA the pivot point) of the sail plan moves a long way aft, meaning that the helm will become quite heavy and hard to handle (I.e. lots of weather helm) whereas if you reef the main first when sailing downwind, the boat stays fairly well balanced and you’re not fighting the boat with lots of helm applied to keep her on course (Which actually slows the boat down quite a bit!) You guys may be all over this already and I hope I’m not trying to teach Grandma how to suck eggs by mentioning it. (Sorry - an Australian term for being a condescending smarty-pants) :-( Once again, loved this epp and would willingly swap places with you, or join you in the mischief IN A HEARTBEAT!!!! Always wishing you fair winds and following seas! Cheers, Mike

Thanks mike. I think it has to do with the layout of the cockpit Bimini and dodger... often the flag will sail to she side when the apparent wind is almost directly behind us. Especially when the enclosure eisen glass is down

Here's my opinion. NIGHTTIME: Wear PFD and harness/tether always, even in cockpit, but especially going forward. As added rule, no one goes forward without someone else in cockpit watching person go forward. DAYTIME: Condition dependent, but I'd always lean toward wearing PFD and harness/tether in 10+ knots of wind and/or when going forward. (Just like I always wear my car seatbelt even if I'm just going down the block to the store.... You don't have to be on the freeway to be killed.) In the ocean, if you go overboard, you will most likely die because the crew won't find you and/or they won't know how to come back to get you unless they've had proper training and practice. That said, every skipper makes his own rules, so I respect Bobby's choices (and love the videos). But IMHO, just like a pop star, movie star, or sports figure, Bobby is a role model for future sailors out there so I'd like to see his (and other) channels lean toward MORE safety rather than LESS safety. Sailing oceans is serious business.

Do you ever twing down your spinnaker sheet a bit for stability? Just curious as I was watching it flop around on you a bit. I know ... shifting wind angles and all that. I always wear a PFD if I'm soloing or if conditions deteriorate, and would definitely use a tether at night, but when it's nice out and you have crew on deck who can handle the boat and execute MOB maneuvers I tend to agree with you.

I have been loving your videos, great inspiration. What is the song you're playing at the end of your video? I know the original but this is a mix and I love it. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Bobby, I totally agree with the wearing of safety gear. It's all about what the conditions are and how challenging it would be for the crew to recover a person if they went over. If it's rough, wear it. Otherwise, it's just cumbersome and unnecessary. The only exception I think would be at night when the entire crew is asleep. I would wear a harness and clip in. Maybe that's just me envisioning waking up from down below to relieve the guy on watch, just to find him not on board. Nightmare scenario. That's my .02.

Don’t take offense Bobby about the harness comments we just worry about you folks moving around the boat in rough weather without one!! Have you ever been hit at night by a rogue wave?

I think wearing life jackets all the time is ridiculous. Be free and adventurous but place and be aware that your life jacket is in the best position should an emergency arise so you can grab it quick. Living in a situation where there is a million in one chance of falling overboard is boring....take up chess !

Well, maybe you kin build auto-inflate into your Depends. Don't they make some really low-impact, tiny safety gear almost like a belt? Just simpler to run around with it always. Especially at night. Add a flashing light and noise maker. Even better, a signaling GPS device like a Nautilus.
