I'm proud of this math puzzle and proud of the guys for solving it. If they had decided to go with any other whole number under 9 though, and climbed the rest of the way from there, there were 7 other encounters inside the subliminal space of the beanstalk corresponding the the other doors/numbers.

I've noticed a pattern. Boss Fight: Reckless abandon badassery. Events That Follow: Cowering in fear of trying to trick a SHOP KEEPER who is hanging out ON THEIR bean stalk. And they slowly gain more recklessness the more bored tehy get outside of battle. But they always get shy preceding battles.

When adding or subtracting any list of whole numbers, we can work out whether the total will be odd or even just by looking at the number of odd values in the list. If that number is odd, the total will be odd; if it's even, they'll cancel out and the total will be even. So for x + y - z to be odd, either one or all of the three numbers must be odd. My answer from the math puzzle is 5 x 2 + 3 / 1 - 4 = 9 in 3 minutes and 16 seconds. I got an attempt with 5 x 3 / 1 - 2 + 4 in 35 seconds, but there is no brackets to become (2+4) and make them -(2+4) = -6, so I need to think up another equation. For a tip, number 1 is special because multiplying or dividing anything with a 1 will always become the number itself, so you can tick off "1" and "multiply by" or "divide by". Therefore you have less equations and numbers to worry about. And remember to equate multiplications and divisions first and then equate additions and subtractions. I hope this will help for who wants to challenge the math puzzle. Cheers

Operator priorities were not used here. Otherwise, it would be a nighmare for the guys. It's just one step a time calculation. And, operator rules are just rules only those who know about them can understand. It's more of a memory rather than a problem solving ability. That doesn't mean an intelligence check. If the GM said that specifically, of course it's an entirely different problem.

A quick python script came up with 216 different ways to solve the for nine. I thought at first that I had screwed it up after it returned "15-+4*3/2" as a solution, but, after some study, I realized that I had forgotten how PEMDAS works and that's actually right.

Since he asked: (5*4-3+1)/2 in about a minute. Writing it down now I noticed the necessity of the brackets, so: 3*4+2-5/1 in about 3 minutes And if that's the one they used: 5*2+3-4/1 in another 2 minutes

Pause. No parentheses. The only division that won't screw you is 4/2 or x/1. Useful if you need to get rid of a 4 or 1. You must use every operator. You do not have a zero. 9 is 3*3 but without grouping you cannot construct a second three. 5*2=10 5*2-1 = 9 5*2-4+3=9 5*2/1-4+3=9 Unpause. Yeah, the n/1 is going to be pretty common in solving this.
