One thing about safety. Before you start something it is good practice to look the job over and think about what could go wrong and how to avoid it. A few extra minutes can save you a whole lot of grief.

When I was a young man, late teen, I rolled my fathers Case backhoe on its side clearing trails on a hill side. No ROPS, yes it was that old. It scared the crap out of me. He had to come down with his track loader and tip it back upright. Lost lots of fluids and I learned a valuable lesson that day!!! Be careful out there.

Hay, Mike! Thank you! No, THANK YOU very much! Been anxiously waiting for today's post. A while back when you was doing the 555 rehab you shared with us a tip you got from Clint and the boys at C & C Equipment. The tip was using an air chisel, with a blunted chisel, to vibrate loose those ridiculously tight hydraulic hose fittings we've all struggled with. Well, over the weekend I blew a hose on my Case 480B backhoe. When I got it to the workshop I hit the two fitting with my air chisel and those fittings came off almost as if they were finger tight. WOW! WOW! WOW! I couldn't believe it! I'll be at the hose shop shortly after they OPEN today for a new one! Now, I'll sit back and enjoy today's episode! Lee PS: I comment again at the end!

The stone bridge is a great idea. Not only can you build it to support lots of weight, but it doesn't even have to be that high off the ground. Because no one cares if water flows over it, under it, or through it... it will not degrade with moisture. And it's easy to set in place with a little concrete, crushed stone, and/or staked rebar. Use a little church limestone to dress it up. Not sure all these stars lined up... ???? You are blessed Captain. Keep up the great content. Cheers!

I like it, there isn’t much you can’t move, all you need is a big lever, even if the lever has hydraulic pressure to assist, stop and think about all the things that have been moved thru out the ages by using pulleys, ropes, levers, horse power, man power, and A frames, you sir can move anything, anywhere, and anytime you so desire, the key is willingness or want. Thanks for the update, enjoying the property development.

I love your work, Mike! I think I have a solution for that leaky backhoe tire. I got a gallon of a tire sealant that says it can be used both off and on road, and it is washable with water. (Some brands can't be used for high speed tires.) I've sealed up 3 leaky tractor trailer tires, some other trailer tires, and I believe it will fix your backhoe tire. I don't remember the brand but it was tannish/orange in color. I believe keeping air in the tires will make the 555 safer and save you money at the same time. I hope this helps!

Captain, there's no doubt that you're competent at what you're doing with the 555. You approach using it safely figuring all the ways things can go wrong and working around them safely. I have no doubt that's gonna be a pretty safe and nice road when it's done. A rock bridge would definitely fit in with that particular area. A couple of seasons and it would look like it's been there for many decades. Maybe a small rock wall on each side of the road as you approach the bridge to stablize each side from erosion.

At the house I grew up in there was a bridge. I didn't know it was a bridge because it was covered with tree roots and stuff. Many years later I came back and found it. I expect it was hundreds of years old. I could imagine the old farm wagons pulled by a horse over a hill. Then I could see the rest of the road as it ran up into a field. I am sure your bridge will look the same and last for many years. I am looking forward to seeing your stone bridge.

ok, before watching the tag on the thumbnail about the backhoe for road building gets this response: The backhoe is never the perfect piece of equipment for the job but it is a perfect piece of equipment to have on the job because of the versatility they have. A dozer or skid steer would both be better to set the road bed and grade, a full excavator to remove trees, stumps, brush along the route but the backhoe can do all the jobs even if less efficiently.

Some 60 years ago, I recall walking over a stone bridge to cross a stream so I could get into a swamp to hunt ducks. I assume farmers had made it 50 years ago when the land was flooded when a dam was put in on the river. Fast forward 30 years and I bought the property adjacent to it. I couldn't find that stone bridge and I assumed another farmer had dug it out to improve drainage. I was forever getting stuck nearby on the stream crossing with a tractor and 2WD ATVs. I had access to a large rock pile and I hauled buckets of stone to line the bottom of the stream. It was not enough stone to impede flow but enough to keep from getting stuck. My point being that you don't need to build a stone bridge but maybe just a stone ford to keep from getting stuck.

You’re really getting good Captain. Knocking us over more times and even once when you were nowhere near us. Great comments about a backhoe vs track hoe. Most important point is the backhoe is the Swiss Army Knife of machines so while it may not be great compared to an excavator it can do so much more that an excavator can’t. Knowing the machine’s limitations is important no matter what you’re operating. A stone creek crossing will be amazing. I hope you manage to pull it off.

Somewhere on the south fork of the Shenandoah river lays a bridge. This bridge sit in the river - not above it. It was built by placing rocks into the river as if they were building a rock dam. Some say they added line, others say cement to the rocks. Today - about 79 years later - it still carries vehicle traffic. During high water, it is underwater - but passable for the stout hearted. Imagine what you could do with the 555, your rocks and a few bags of concrete to finish off the rough parts.

In my nearly 40 years working in construction. I've observed one thing about most backhoe operators that I've watched, and you don't seem to do what I've noticed they almost always do. That is the date always seem to plant their loader bucket Cutting Edge into the ground and lift their front wheels off the ground as far as possible before putting their Outriggers down and lifting the back wheels off the ground. I do realize that you are not a backhoe operator and that they've probably got tens of thousands of hours or more operating a backhoe. I think you do a great job with what you have ,just folding an observation I have observed. 👍

I know the Captain is an actual fireman, and I trust he's being responsible with these burn piles. But I grew up with Smokey Bear telling us to prevent forest fires. I was always under the impression that a lit cigarette could start a major fire if you're not careful. Camp fires were supposed to be in a clear space, surrounded by rocks. In recent times, we've seen devastating fires over large areas of land, from Canada's East coast to California to Hawaii. What's the secret to containing these burn piles???
@basilchadbourne3254
@basilchadbourne3254 Жыл бұрын
The key is burning when it is wet. As long as the leaves are moist the sparks that come off the fire shouldn’t set the woods on fire. The other trick is to stay in the area and watch for smoke away from the burn pills. All these large fires you talked about happened because it was very dry and a single spark is all that it takes.

I have often dragged boulders that were too large and heavy to lift with my tractor loader. I would make a log chain cradle around the boulder and drag it a quarter mile to where I needed it. Dam builders and loggers would often build log caissons on the edge of a stream and maybe some in the center and fill them with rocks. Then they could build a bridge on top of the caissons. You use what you have.

Dumb question, at 16:30 you talk about not being stable. Why don’t you fill the bucket with dirt, keep it low to lower center of gravity, and use the front bucket to lift up the front tires. The bucket just barely touching the ground is not helping you at all.

Access road taking shape nicely Mike 😁 Stone crossing will take some thinking time... You could pour a bridge abutment either side of the channel and place the large stones on top, and possibly some baffle rocks above the bridge to reduce the water velocity, if you have room and enough fall for that. Just a thought, it may give you some ideas, no doubt there will be plenty of other viewers giving you ideas too !!!🤓😂 I think part of your disclaimer should involve the camera placement and subsequent falling over of your viewers, wouldn't want anyone to blame you for their cricked necks and damaged furniture from holding on tightly 🤣🤣🤦‍♂️
