Glad you reviewed this one. Saw it a couple weeks ago and found it engaging. I also like when it went off the rails towards the end.

I paused your review halfway to go watch A Dark Song on Netflix. WOW! One of my new favorite movies! I cried at the end when she was in the pond. Thank you SO much for the tip! I never would have watched it without your review. Powerful movie.

I really liked this film, I want to see it again. I especially liked that it didn't pull its punches at the end- it actually takes the premise to its conclusion instead of using it as a set up for something else, or leaving it ambiguous.

Her guardian angel finally showed up and helped her escape the evil entities that were torturing her. And we get to see the angel smile realizing that she has spiritually matured into "spending" her favor asking for "the poweer to forgive" instead of her initial desire for revenge.

To get the most out of the ending, think about the whole film from a Christianity perspective. The whole plot and especially the ending hinge on the theme of heartfelt redemption. For the first two cycles, she was not driven toward finding an angel (which is what she implied she desired by saying she wanted to speak to her dead son, and this is what Joseph was trying to help her summon). This is why when there were hints that an angel was watching, she became upset, since she was expecting demons (though she wasn't fully driven for that either until the third cycle). As she began to get her desires, she also started questioning her purpose in seeing that Joseph was literally dying to get her to the goal. She actually started looking for redemption when leaving the house to get help. If not for her turning away from her desire for revenge, the angel would have never shown up in the first place. Remember how Joseph said part of the purity is either forgiveness or blood sacrifice? The demons were not simply torturing her. By cutting off her finger, they took the blood sacrifice and were ready to give her the favor of revenge. At that moment, she knew in her heart that she couldn't do it and fled them and her chance for revenge. When she found the angel, she was saying "I'm sorry," to God. Specifically because she realized she had gone so far away from him (represented by the angel) that it took a great act of intercession to save her. She knew that the 'only' favor to ask for was the power to forgive, since she lived the horror of what blood sacrifice meant. And for those who are disappointed by the demons, they are supposed to be close to human, since human desires like revenge are the rejection of God (as we can see from the conversation with her sister).

It was kinda disappointing for me. I liked how rituals was shown, they went into great details and more then any other movie that I know, but it just missed that "it" factor. Honestly 3rd act felt like it was falling apart for me. Shame really, because I am sucker for "theater" movies (when you have only two-three cast members the entire movie).

The movie started off interesting, but became increasingly pointless and fell flat toward the end. It had some good stuff like the murderers who killed her son and the angel, but that's pure sensationalism and didn't add to the story. The movie ended with a bunch of various scenes. In the end we find out the lady wanted to find forgiveness. Not sure why she felt that she had to hide this from the occultist. It was never explained. The lady seemed difficult from the beginning, yet pays the guy 80,000 pounds for what? To be antagonistic with the guy to create tension and further the plot? Then she accidentally kills him while getting physical with him. The lady just seems conflicted all throughout the movie. It's as if the writer made everything up as he went along. At the beginning, the lady tells the occultist that she's doing this for love, the guy gets upset and they drive an hour back into town and wait for what appears to be hours at the train station until at the last second she reveals to him that it's for her son, only after giving him 80,000 pounds, so he would have done the ritual for the original price. So, what was the point in the entire movie? So the lady can dump the occultist's body into the swamp? It was just pointless.
@serpentsepia6638
@serpentsepia6638 6 жыл бұрын
The movie would have explored itself further if the lady had been honest from the beginning. When there are two characters stuck with each other in a confined space, in this case a house, naturally there's going to be tension between the two. That's just how the formula works. But having her constantly lie to the occultist makes the tension feel manufactured, because each lie works against her, and each lie works against the audience and we lose out on a deeper meaning that the story is attempting to take us. The movie followers her as the main character and yet we know little to nothing about her true intention, other than to contact an angel. It's as if we're in the head of the occultist instead and we're being led to one forced answer after another as the movie progresses. Then at the end she asks for forgives, then turns around and dumps the occultist's body in the swamp. I guess she didn't want to be bogged down by questions from police. -__-

Actually, she lied to the occultist because there was a real danger of summoning unspeakable things if your reasons were dark, which hers were. She wanted revenge, pure and simple, and was full of hatred and grief.. and you don't summon an angel with dark intent. As the film progressed she learned finally at the end that what she actually wanted more than anything else was peace, the peace that comes with being able to forgive, rather than to be filled with hate and bitterness which would have stayed with her anyway if she had had revenge. So that is what she asked for, and that's what she got; the ability to forgive and and the inner peace that came with it.
