A film which perfectly encapsulates the mundanity of a day in the life of a self pitying drunkard. I think a few people are missing the point of this film, but if you were never a drunk it just won't resonate so certainly won't be seen as entertaining - and I completely get that. But for those of you that experienced days like these you will know it's certainly no day at the beach. I could smell the cigarette smoke and alcohol on his damp clothes, taste every drop in his pursuit of narcissistic oblivion. I lived days *exactly* like this. Sober 5 years.

The performance of Mark Burns is impressive. Really felt for the guy trapped by the drink but at the same time with the responsibility for the little girl. Great performances. Best portrayal of an alcoholic ever. The child's acting was perfect. Even more so considering the difficultly of the subject matter. It's a shame the title of this video doesn't even mention the incredible actors or the real director. I know the Sellers, Polanski names get more hits, but this is an injustice. The main character died before he ever got to see this amazing film. .

I think this one of the most brilliant films ever made. Much maligned, misunderstood, lost and disregarded for years. I don't know how or why it took me so long to finally watch it I've certainly been aware of it for a long time. This film is far too brilliant for much of the human race to grasp all of it's layers and meanings and poetic prose. This kind of writing is long gone and a part of the past we only dream of now

Roman Polanski was present during the entire filming of A Day at the Beach. He was editing the picture and shooting inserts with the director, Simon Hesera, when news came of his wife's murder in California. He left England that night. The film was hastily finished without him, put on the shelf and has only recently been rediscovered. In a manner of speaking, this is the film that saved Roman Polanski's life. He was working on it when Charles Manson's Family killed Sharon Tate and others at their home. In fact, Sharon was unhappy that Roman was still not home, meaning that his working on the film kept him unexpectedly longer than anticipated, and he was supposed to be home during the slayings.

@morgansword
@morgansword 5 ай бұрын
@@denisesaunders5473 I am very sorry for that loss as it could of been different maybe should alcohol never entered the picture. I am not trying to simplify how or why, just trying to address alcohol and how it gets into a relationship stealthy. Like all drugs, it feels good to escape being tired or what ever it was that people start by use of alcohol. I wanted to be like my dad who was a horrible drunk. I drank at a early age and then found something to replace it by. I did the church thing and was heavy into going there. Work got so hard and heavy, times then were really tough with a recession going on. I did not pay attention to my lady who was the love of my life. Its much deeper than that but this is not the place. I wallowed in self pity, found alcohol made me a big guy in my mind as I had a lot of money by then. I had been divorced for about eighteen years and really did throw myself into work. Work hard and drink hard. I landed in jail for a period of two and a half years because the judge was tired of seeing me in his court room. I got out and was going to have a drink when I got out but seemed to need work as money gone and just a average no account around the people I thought friends. Long story short, I did not start and found some property, etc. It was while I had got the property that someone gave me two scared puppies that I found I needed more than they needed me. I am not a deeply religious man but do believe. I know for a fact that I would of fell off the wagon at some point had I not found someone/thing that needed me for their safety/diligent care. We were poor but we survived on the warmth of each others bodies at night sleeping in a trailer with no heat in the winter in alaska. I made sure we had heat after that night. I had finally got paid for work that should of been long paid for before. I could go on and on about this but the important thing was two dogs who loved me and I really loved them. I grieve their passing in two thousand ten at the age of twelve and a half. Way too short a period of time to share with something so kind and wonderful.

I have never been so selfish as to put my child in those situations but I definitely have been the type of alcoholic like he is in every way. No wonder my daughter hasn't spoken to me in years and I no longer have friends. If you are young and seeing this please please understand your kids and your friends are more valuable than gold. If you're married try to be a good man because that relationship is also so important. This probably sounds basic but believe me it's true and it will be the most important stuff as you get older.

I disagree. Devastating. At the end he passes out so the long day can end but he is not free, he must live on. "Knife in the Water" - even more unforgettable to me - shows through constantly. The wet soundtracks are exhausting and Polanski just tortures you. It is not Hollywood formulaic but also not tedious or contrived. many 60's and 70's movies are t&c of course from a 2024 perspective.

This film is a testimony of why one should give up their addictions. I recall 25 years ago I was driving with my 4 year old son. I had used heroin and became cotton sick while going through a McDonald's drive through. I was getting lockjaw and shivering as I paid and pulled into a parking spot. I wasn't even high, it was just a well shot. I had to turn the heat up in the car and wrap in blankets. I told my son I had the flu. I am so glad I got sober not long after, but that was a definite wakeup call that Summer day!

As a longtime queer fan of Peter Sellers, it's very interesting to see him play a gay role. This was certainly ahead of its time. Thanks.
