It was a Great Depression thing. You went to a movie theater and could pay $5 to be entered into a raffle to win more money. Kind of like the lottery. This is a dated reference now. Which is a shame since most of the rest of the humor does still hold up.

Jalex, what are you talking about? There are, like, two jokes in here that aren't "PC", and even then, I hesitate to use that term - smoking jokes for kids are more eyebrow raising than "not PC". I don't think anyone is in favor of returning to cartoons with thick lipped African Americans and squinty eyed Asians. In answer to the larger question, we live in a different time, and stuff like this just doesn't market to kids - at least, that's what execs think.
@jlex1049
@jlex1049 8 жыл бұрын
Today's kids are complete jackasses. They're the dumb little fools that walk off cliffs to catch invisible pocket monsters. As for the big lips and squint eyes, that's one thing, but for the most part, everything else is a whole hell of a lot funnier than pokemon, digimon and I'manassholemon.

This was one of my favorite Warner Bros. cartoons when I was a kid, for its puns and play-on words, and for showing how the animals were smarter than the humans-two of the humans couldn't read the signs! For that reason, "Hey, Sister, can't you read?" had me rolling in laughter, also because monkeys usually take any peanuts offered them! Thanks for bringing this back!

One says "Bread and Butter" when you are walking with a buddy side-by-side and there's an obstruction, like a pole, wall, etc. that forces the two of you to separate for a while and if you don't say it, something bad willl happen. It' s an old superstition. Some people say "salt and pepper." Can you dig it? P.S. I'm 58 years old. Grew up with 1960's slang. Radical! (1980's slang). Creative people have *always* been creative. It's nothing new or got better or worse over the years. Good humor, good plays, good novels etc have maintained their quality over the years. Btw, this humor was nothing uncommon in 1939 but cartoons could portray it in an absurdly comical way regular films couldn't.

I looked it up. Its a superstition that if you say bread and butter or salt and pepper when an obstacle or a pole comes between you and friend / spouse you will never be separated. The idea is that bread and butter go together. That's what Wikipedia says anyway.

+Elizabeth Alvarado He was all riled up because he forgot to claim his prize. . . so "they called my name out at Bank Night and I wasn't there!" Bank Night was being held at some movie theaters and audience members would go up to sign for any kind of prizes which took place during intermissions. If somebody's name was called but that somebody wasn't there to claim it, (s)he risks losing his/her prize. This way of movie theaters raising money was eventually banned by 1940.
