The reason why this church looks different is because it is a Protestant church. The Eastern Townships were historically settled by British loyalists who fled the US after their revolution, and they built up their churches in the Anglican style, not the Catholic style. This is also why many cities, towns and villages in the region have English sounding names (e.g. Granby, Sherbooke, Shefford, Compton, Stanstead, Orford etc.) There is even a small English-language university (Bishop's University) in the Sherbooke area.
@fmichlick3 жыл бұрын
Also, as time passes some churches go bancrupt and the buildings end up being sold, not sure if that's the case here though. Usually, the graveyard has to continue to allow public access.
@hdufort3 жыл бұрын
Today, the population's composition has shifted. The descendants of loyalists are a small fraction of the region's population. Protestant churches are often converted into studios, private homes or community centers. In fact, there is a church converted into a home on rue Shefford.

I could suggest Acadie in the Maritimes, mostly NB and NS, but if you do not understand French, you will not be able to catch the subtle (or not so subtle) differences between Acadian and Quebec French. Nevertheless, the history of the Acadians is distinct and compelling. We have close cousins in Louisiana and when I travelled there, I felt as if I was home!

My dad is from Quebec and my dad's whole family still lives there. I was born in Ontario. When I have gone to Quebec (I'm not huge on city life) I didn't leave Montreal with the same feeling as I did with Quebec city. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed parts of Montréal, but Quebec city was almost magical for me. My family all live in Sherbrook Quebec, but they were all born and raised in the small village of lac frontiere.

@@TheNewTravel The RCM (Regional County Municipality) that Granby is in, called La Haute-Yamaska, was recently transferred administrative regions. It used to be in Montérégie, but now it is in Estrie/Cantons-de-l'est/Eastern Townships (You can find this information on the french wikipedia pages). Therefore, you kind of did and did not visit Montérégie. Culturally, Granby is much closer to Estrie/Cantons-de-l'est/Eastern Townships than Montérégie. those church are more Loyalist church... anglican if you wish... they're beautiful! Cantons de l'Est in English is Eastern township... many American during the war moved there and there's also a lot of Scottish descendant... as far as I know! So a lot of English influence there even if it's French. What he says about the area is true, it was the Champlain sea way back when... but it's true for all of the Montérégie (the South-Shore and more) of Montréal... I'm in the South-West of Québec, near the border of Ontario... and it was the Champlain Sea as well... it made for a rich soil for farming and gardening...

Eastern townships is well known for agriculture because of its micro climate : wine , cheese , apple , all vegetables and fruits . Ski area and spa . Look for Hovey Manor on Massawipi lake . One of the best manor in the world and cuisine . The Abbaye St Benoit has won the best blue cheese in the world .... You also have lavender fields like in France . There are quite better food than poutine ... Quebec chefs are very creative and well known for their healthy cuisine , using regional products . Next time , visite a vineyards ( Dunham area ) and climb Owl's head mountain for a view on lake Champlain .... I don't think your tour guide has some knowledge of that area ... sorry for his English level which I consider very basic .
