I was with VMAQ-2 and the EA-6B never was an Air Force aircraft. Second whoever told you an EA-6B had explosive cartridge start ability would surely fail their next urinalysis. They never had that ability and needed the Huffer or forced air underground utilities to start, and it didn't have a APU.

I loved the EA 6B prowler when i was in Afghanistan 07-08, it saved us from so many attacks on the base and many ground combat forces from IED'S because of the radar jamming on the taliban cell phones from explosives remotely exploding. I love those Navy and Marine pilots

The engine starts were achieved via AIR Huffer, or Air Start Unit. A separate /small gas turbine engine that put out x amount of air to start the engines, all done through a air assisted starter attached to the gearbox on the engine. NAVY planes used these portable Air Start Units to start the J52-PW-408 engines, and to tow the a/c. The EA-6B was always a US Navy/US Marines only airctaft.

The prowler was for sure the loudest aircraft on the flight deck during a cat launch , Those j-52 turbojets would rattle the fillings out of your head and a very capable jet at its job , Back in my time late eighties they could carry the agm-88 HARM missle depending on the mission . @@Hosscoller I heard a story about a US AE-6B shutting off the power in a major southern California city when the Navy was doing exercises off the coast back in the early 80's. So yeah, I believe that aircraft can do things electronically that no other aircraft can do. It's was so advanced for it's time. And we are just starting to see what the EA-18G do. All, I never understood WHY the DoD chose the EA-6, over the EF-111A. THE EF-111A only put two lives at risk, and flew just as fast as the strike packages they supported. The ALQ-99 was all internal, powered by generators on the TF-30 turbofans, didn't need the tanker support the EA-6 did, provider better stand-off jamming, and on top of everything, the EA-6 had the ALQ-99 mounted in external, drag-producing, pods that were powered by wind-powered turbines on the front of each pod. Seems stupid to me...Hammer USAF SSgt; US Army CW4/SrAviator
