Rising costs..what a joke. Cut the order down to 3 out of an order for 32. Pay penalties for canceling contract. Pay unemployment to those laid off the project. You can't try out new ship technology without building one or two, just like you can't try out new aircraft (or tank, or cannon, or rifle, or...) without building a few. Unfortunately building one ship is a lot more expensive than building one aircraft. These Zumwalt destroyers won't go to waste, though, they're still perfectly fine for combat... but the DDG(X) destroyers are, too, but at a lower cost.

The Arleigh Burke and Zumwalt class ships were built at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. We Bath residents are proud of the work done at the shipyard.

Zumwalt class was a waste unfortunately, though I greatly appreciate the efforts of the servicemen and women who are stationed to the three active destroyers. They'll likely never see a proper full tour and will be scrapped within the next few years. I absolutely appreciate the intentions, but the Zumwalt will forever be regarded as a lesson in military bloat.

They say the Zumwalt has an "advanced gun system" at 4:34, but that's a truth with modifications. They have the guns but no ammo since it was too expensive. The two guns will be removed very soon. Hopefully lessons will be learned from these ships.

Yes and install some of the new 200 mile range ground to air missles,and ship to ship or ground for short range. They have ICBMs for long. Then guns for up close. Cruse missiles for mid range, LOL

The advanced rocket artillery shell of the Zumwalt class was supposed to cost $35k each. But being made by Lockheed Martin, the real cost was 1 million a shell! What a scam. No wonder they cancelled this white elephant.

The phrase "Perhaps the most unique..." is a grammatical error of the first degree. "Unique" is akin to "Pregnant". One is either pregnant or not pregnant. Unique admits to no comparative. Something is either unique or not unique. So there. Four Billion (with a B) Dollars? That's unique, all right. Stealth? Give me a generation three fighter with two Exocet missles and we'll see how uniquely stealthy it really is. What a unique boondoggle. Fix the leaking water pipes in my community before building this unique behemoth.

I think it is relevant to replace the zumwalt class, with a new species of Spruance class, about 6 ships obviously lacking in modern weapons, I mean a revived Spruance class modernized and equipped to operate on a par with the Burke class.

its literally a modern day u-boat. its a great design, but just terrible program management. the concept is also flawed because unless you are traveling with other stealth boats, being steal is a waste of time if you are sailing next to a 1000ft+ aircraft carrier. also sailing in heavily contested waters alone is also a bit too brave. for the navy the future is here already and they are drones (uav & usv)

The stealth feature is made to operate alone mainly. Also, doesn't even matter if others are not stealth, it's still mean enemy radar can't lock your ship at their max range.

Classic case of red tape and bureaucracy run amok. So by the time one was even produced, advanced technology in radar and advanced guided missile etc. outpaced this debacle. Especially, with inexcusable flaws, such as the engines not being able to run in warmer waters. Which is just ludicrous!

Partially why Zumwalt class was cancelled. Was way too expensive (and it supposedly had not enough defense capabilities). You can get 2 or 3 Arleigh Burke class destroyers for the price of 1 Zumwalt.

The Arleigh Burke has the missiles inboard towards the center of the ship whereas the Zumwalt has them along the sides.....where they are less protected. I like the Arleigh Burke class better.

Until you arm and fire missiles they're pretty harmless beyond the warhead and these ships were only supposed to use SM-2s and 6s which are just metal sticks with rockets strapped to their ass.

The annual military budget of the US about equals the military budgets of the next TEN highest spending countries COMBINED. The waste, fraud and abuse seen in the development of weapons systems like this one or the F-35 is unfortunately typical, not exceptional. You're probably right about being over budget. I don't know if that means the first ship was more expensive than following ships in the class or if it actually means "over budget." The first ship in a class will always be more expensive, because no matter how detailed and exacting the planning is, there will always be unexpected problems to be dealt with. The knowledge gained while building the first ship is put to use building the following ships.
