Friday in the Greenhouse turned in to Saturday in the vegetable garden on the smallholding. Tending to the tomatoes, looking at seeds, taking care of the seedlings that made it through the heatwave and harvesting some onions!

Looks like bind-weed - larger version with the white flower. Very invasive and a sod to get rid of. xx

The gro bag trays are £2.80 in B&q at the moment Tracey .Deep and sturdy .I pop three canes in each pepper bucket and twine round them as it stops the weight of the peppers snapping the branches .Lovely update 🙂You need to build an outside cold frame Tracey.Everything I sow in summer goes in my outside cold frame ,brassicas, lettuce, everything that won't like the greenhouse .We used an old shower door as a lid 😊

Tracy, you can add capillary matting ( cheap bulk roll on scamazon) to trays to reduce rot. If you have some heavy duty plastic sheet Steven could make a shallow trays for the greenhouse shelves lined with capillary mat for all year use

Oh thank goodness I thought I’d lost a week 😂😂. I give up side shooting for the most part but then 90% of mine are outside so I’m just letting them go. Plus it’s too bloody hot to go out and do it 🥵. So just a slight fluctuation in temperature 😱😱. And shoe trays are normally more sturdy, I use bus pan trays for water trays. Oooh cardboard for no dig 👍👍. If Steven groans at your spending he’d have a heart attack at what I spent this month 😅😅. Earwigs 🤔 normally. Yes those cranberry tomatoes were a faff. No I totally get it my videos can take days 😂😂 to upload ahh country life. All looking fantastic guys, have a wonderful week, Ali 🌞🥵 36c 🇨🇦

If your family like tinned raspberries, simply canning (and the Ball book) have a great raw pack water bath canning recipe. I gently soak/wash my raspberries first put them in pint jars (I did half and pint jars) top with hot light syrup, 1/2 inch headspace, can for 15 minutes. Turn off heat, wait 5 minutes MAX and lift out. There’s a hot pack method too but it’s a fiddle and the berries aren’t as whole looking. Using sugar is not healthy these days I know but it’s a shelf stable winter treat and great for trifles or a with yoghurt. Not as mushy as defrosted raspberries. Look lovely on the pantry shelf too. 😃

Yes, bind weed. It's a nightmare. Found in my compost bin. Thick tendrils. So another job to get rid of it. Broad beans you could make a hummus with it. I use bread baskets (free) and plastic inside. For tomatoes I can get 2 buckets in. Chillies 2 or 3 depending on the chilli plant..

Oh Tracey, I feel your pain with the bind weed - we have it creeping in from next door’s garden on both sides so impossible for us to get rid entirely. The good thing is that it is generally easy to pull out so whilst it does keep coming back, if you stay on top of your weeding, it doesn’t get enough of a hold to strangle anything. Hopefully if you are just limited to that one bed you have a good chance to eradicate it! Hubby found a slug inside one of our peppers yesterday so I wonder if it’s those blighters putting holes in yours? I love the long form videos but what a pain for you that they take so long to upload… ❤❤

Thank you and you’re very welcome. Yes we have and it works very well though they do bunch at the top so maybe nip out at the right height for you to prevent this. You can vary the diameter of floor space the you give them too, for larger circles you could plan shade loving crops between. Best of luck! 🤞

Yikes. That weed is Bindweed. Dig it up from the root (thick long white root). Any little bits left behind or bits of leaf will reroot. Charles Dowding puts it in his compost bins because he finds it dies when it reaches high temperatures. I don’t. It roots into my compost bin and thrives. Put it in the field for the pigeons or hens. Or in the waste bin. I’ve another comment…..

I can’t believe it, seems like a resounding yes to Bindweed so I’ll get on top of the bugger, ‘scuse my French. Yes, I’ve seen Charles do that but selfishly never taken notice as not suffered from it. I shall definitely get it out and feed to the hens or pigs!

That weed is bind weed, very fast growing and strangles everything it wraps around. It is an allotment holders nightmare. You really must keep on top of it and when the beds have no crops in, dig as much of the bind weed root as you possibly can. Even the tinyest piece of broken off root will grow into another plant.

@@OurSmallholdingAdventure If you have bought municipal green waste compost at any stage, even a cheap 50l bag from the garden centre, I suspect this could be the source. I bought a ton bag a few years back and was over-run with bramble and ivy. I now avoid green waste compost like the plague.
