I have an electric blue Acara, he’s the only Acara in our tank and he frequently digs sandy pits, throws rocks around, tugs on plant leaves and displays in a way sure to please any girls( if only there were some) poor guy lives in hope. He actually seems quite happy, and busy. The Congo tetras and harlequin tank mates just give him space when he’s feeling macho.

With Green Neons being shy, I think it could be the water. I keep them, and they also used to hide ALL the time - until I (accidentally) changed their water parameters. I’ve realized that now that their water is super soft and the pH is less than 7, they’re ALWAYS out. Their color got much more bright and sparkly as well. Even after I’ve thinned the plants out in their tank, they’re still out and about, come to the front of the tank to beg for food, etc. It’s a group of about a dozen with nothing more than 9 embers. This is dramatically different behavior than I experienced with them for well over a year, where for that whole time they were constantly hiding in the back of the tank. Their tank isn’t a blackwater (yet), but with dKH ~1 and pH between 6~6.8, it’s close. I think that could be key.

I've had the same with my cardinal tetra when I first got them. They were swimming around once I put them in, but in the following weeks I needed to do maintenance, trim plants and everything. That scared them. So when Vivarium 2023 came up, I bought some more fish there (rummynose and silvertip tetras) and these fish are much more brave. The cardinals came right out!

When you talk about snails I have to agree. I would suggest caution when suddenly removing a large number of them. Snails can cut your nitrates by eating decomposing food. If you remove a pile of snails it can throw your cycle off and cause you a problem.

The huge tank looks amazing! Perhaps try a similar-size reef tank with just salt-water fish; angels, butterflies, a clown trigger, pinniatus batfish, etc etc. I can tell you from experience the larger the tank the more stable it is.
