3 yrs ago I was homeless in S.F., completely alone, having moved to SF from NJ. Dan Mahar befriended me, sharing his food, home and most of all, his friendship with me. Dan saved my life. Now, living back on the East coast, I discovered the video of Dan while doing a search for him and am horrified that my long lost friend is homeless. Now it's my chance to help Dan. I NEED HELP CONTACTING HIM. PLEASE HELP ME HELP DAN.

@blaby4ever I apprecaite your heartfelt comment, what you need to bare in mind is that there are so many people who are homeless and most have reasons that are different from each other. Most reasons are NOT the same as the next person. BUT, many families are broken that don't care about a family member who is suffering such as this!!! You are absolutely right....HOW SAD!! This is the reason why the world is the way it is, MOST people don't care and bitch about it after!!

Some people, somehow, through some kind of mental disability, just can't get it together. I respect all of them for doing what they can and I think we all should respect them. I'm just not sure of how to solve this problem. And yes, being homeless in California is a tragedy, but this guy, compared to poverty stricken people in other countries who are dying of starvation and don't have clean drinking water, is really well off.

Illegal hunting will get you into prison, in some cases for a long time. Although I have met a guy who caught a squirrel once, he assured it was not worth the trouble. The city is where the family and friends are. Drinking and smoking is one of the few relaxations/outlets you get. If you think these people are just sitting around all day you are (in most cases) dead wrong, not many wants to hire homeless people. They do save money, but addiction is some hard shit.

It is so sad how much people judge other people and leave such mean comments, just sad and Americans should help each other & help people that need help get the professional help they need, you never know maybe one day it may be your son, mother, father, aunt, uncle, brother, sister or even YOU. So please refrain from leaving ugly hurtful comments & try to be compassionate.

I was out on the streets WITHOUT an addiction. Please don't think the problem of homelessness is ALL about addiction or mental illness. The Veterans Administration puts a lot of people out on the street by giving their top execs bonuses for denying veterans medical assistance via the paper shuffle.

@lnknptheory I don't know if it will work Ink, but some people use the "Federal Fair Use Act". Using video for education, teaching, non-profit, etc. I know some have had video's pulled and later put back up due to this law. I don't know much about it, but it's worth taking a look into it. By the way, I love video!

As an example of corruption with the shelters, I went to post a comment on the videos of the Nashville Rescue mission and when I clicked on "POST", it said "PENDING APROVAL" And then it was "NOT" posted. They don't want the truth getting out to the public! I'm telling people this so public interest will grow and decide to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

there are plenty of programs for homeless like the salvation army arc program, the truth is the majority don't want any kind of structure or responsibility...I know, I was homeless in Seattle and Austin and there are plenty of opportunities to turn your life around if you haven't lost your willingness to make a effort.

@BobbyPopz Just so you all know, as I feel for this man, I am homeless in Nashville, Tennessee. I don't have any dependency problems just a hard time trying to find work. (I don't give up though) I know I'll find work, it's a matter of when. The main thing I wish for the people who actually care to know is that MOST homeless shelters are very corrupt. They treat homeless like dog crap!!! Please see my next comment>>>>>

It took me six months to land my minimum wage job. I'm just lucky I had some savings from the last job I had. I've had a lot of close-calls, and wouldn't be surprised to find myself living under a bridge. That said, I know of a group of travelers, masquerading as hippies, who actually have a culture of begging and street-soliciting. These people have a mindset and philosophy that is deeply devolved from it's counter-society origins.

@808Productionz That's the problem with this attitude. It insults people by saying human beings-whatever their age/condition-are incapable of doing anything for themselves or being anything more than they are. All they're good for is taking handouts and then spending it on booze and cigarettes. I refuse to hold that view. My view is that people sometimes do need help, but they don't need to waste that help in that way. Instead, they CAN change their lives if they put forth the effort to do so.

Maybe this is his way of living? Who are you to judge what is right or wrong? If it is my money being given to him, what say do you have for the kind gesture I would give him? The difference between you and I, is you still live in the smoke of the world, whilst I see it clearly. Yes he does have that potential, every person has that potential, but between the two of us, you, who would ignore this man, and I, who would attempt to help him. Who really is the worse person?

Now i dont wish homelessness on anybody but this guy even say's "they mysteriously fired me from my job" then in the next sentence "i moved away and stopped drinking". Hardly a mystery then is it. You're an alcoholic, THAT'S why you got fired. It's his own fault he lost his job.

"Most of my income goes for beer and tobacco." Sorry, but I find it hard to feel sorry for people like that. There are homeless people who do need help. Of that, there is no question. But it sure turns people off from trying to help someone when they admit they accept your hard earned money that you give them out of the kindness of your heart, and use it for booze and cigarettes!

You have absolutely no idea. This man is old, he has no family to turn to, he lost his job, what could you "really" expect from a person that's practically lost everything? Not only is he an older gentleman, he's also homeless, what employer would hire him? I'm going to guess you're barely 16, you have no idea how the world works.

We can't see this or help this person because of a damned 'SONG' in the background!? This stinks! To Whomever this documentary BELONGS: Can you not go back and remove the copyright BG material from the master? I'll GIVE you some songs that I wrote. I'll even play them for you. Hundreds (thousands) of us probably would! Come on!

@youdevil6 I agree!!! not ALL homeless people are lazy or losers. Some people cannot help their misfortunes. Disabled people sometimes can't work. it's way too easy for people to say shit behind their PC screen they'd never say in RL. I say what I want when I want and am not afraid to speak my mind or opinions to anyone's face. in fact, I prefere face to face arguements.

I went to Colorado and it didn't work out. Would like to hear more detail about why it didn't "work out" before I form an impression of how sympathetic this guy is. I like the comment from Dawn. "They CHOOSE to be homeless" Now, first, I don't agree if they're talking mentally ill, they have too many problems with living much less finding a job. But the able bodied people who walk around begging I give them a full middle finger salute. Sure, min wage sucks, but have you no pride?? Guess not!
