I am a fellow plant mom but I cannot comprehend how self watering pots don’t rot roots. They seem to work amazing!

Hi!! So they TOTALLY CAN if used improperly. The trick is to not keep a constant reservoir of water. Once the reservoir empties out (in these plant pots, it’s via a wick system), I wait for the soil to dry out AND for the plant to display signs of thirst. Then I refill the reservoir again. This is why I can go for over a month usually before having to refill 👍

I make my own (see pinned comment). Any oil-based soap can burn leaves because it’s oil. Make sure to use away from direct light and keep plants away for few hours or use in the evening.

I would say more succulent/caci types of plants would not appreciate having more moist soil consistently that self-watering pots provide

I’ve had self-watering pots with soil for a long time. The key is to not keep a constant reservoir. I only fill the reservoir once it’s emptied out, the soil is dry, AND the plant shows signs of needing water.
