A Day in the Life of a Volkswagen Technician in 2024

Sit down and enjoy as I take you along to work with me. In this video I wrap up a thermostat housing job from the day before, I perform a basic service and tire rotation, and an occupant detection campaign. It wasn't an extremely busy or productive day, but I hope you enjoy seeing what a day in the life of a Volkswagen technician looks like.

Thermostat housing... I told the dealer over and over I smelled coolant and they couldn't find it. Warranty ends and suddenly it's the thermostat housing which just happens to cost $1800 to fix. And is the most common fault on VW's. The dealer basically lied to me repeatedly. And this is why this is my first and last VW I will ever buy.

I’m sorry you had a bad experience. I suggest finding another dealer, their cars are still really good! You can also call corporate to try to get reimbursed.

I love doing those pods recalls, pays like 2.5 hours and I can do it in an hour with the seat in the car.

Yeah, they weren’t too bad! I hadn’t tried doing it in the car before though.

A 2022 Taos needing a head gasket? SMH

It’s a pretty common issue on the first year 1.5 in both the Taos and the Jetta. There was a problem with the head gaskets causing a coolant leak on the firewall side of the block. Some of them even had a mount contacting the head preventing it from clamping down properly. I did about 15 or so during my time at VW.

I think they sorted it out for 24. I’m pretty sure I’ve done a few 2023’s though.

Is that a MK4.5 City Golf in the background at 2:48?? How often do you see foreign market models come through?

It sure is! I live in Canada and the City Golf was sold here new. But we did see a 2015 or 2016 TDI Passat come from Mexico, that was pretty cool to see. It didn’t have any of the emissions controls that our cars had.

How long were you with VW? And do your certifications/rank carry over to Porsche?

I was with VW a total of about 5 years. Unfortunately none of my training carried over so I’m starting from square one.

In Canada we have to go through a three year apprenticeship program and pass a final exam to get our 310s license. That license allows you to work in the trade anywhere you want. The brands have their own training programs to ensure their technicians are fully versed in the brand. VW training unfortunately doesn’t carry over to Porsche.

Always the thermostat housing It started in 1993 i believe on golf mk3 and the havent foxed that problem yet Thats how you know the maker os crappy
