I live in Holmes County and can say the same thing. This video sums it up very well. It would be very difficult to go into all of the variations and exceptions to the rule from community to community and sect to sect or even church districts let alone wealthy families that can sometimes tend to make their own rules because they have enough clout in their little corner of the community. I like all of the people who are saying this video isn’t even close to the truth. It’s obvious they’ve barely experiened it for themselves. I’ve lived in this community my entire life. I’ve attended public school with some of them. I have close personal friends. I dated a girl who was Amish till she was eight years old. My neighbors are Amish. Their oldest daughter is our landlord. I’ve worked with them and have driven them around all day several times. I have close family members who drive them every day.

This is a really romanticized overview of the life of the Amish that leaves out a number of key issues in the communities...
@chuchulainn92754 жыл бұрын
No it isn't. It's just a general overview. The point of the video isn't to go into the the nitty gritties of Amish life but to give people a tiny glimpse. Because you are right. Amish beliefs is very complex. Think of this video as if someone is teaching you the parts of an engine and what they do. This knowledge doesn't make you a mechanic. But at least if you go into the shop, you can explain what's wrong without using the words "thingy" and "doohickey" too much.

Sniper2008009 well for one they do use electricity and the internet, They just don’t believe it being in the actual home so there may be a telephone or computer in the barn. Some use cellphones. They also use power tools and motor vehicles. In terms of issues, Many have health problems, obesity is one because their way of life is being pushed out. The diet is heavy in calories and meant for laborers And many are leading sedentary lifestyles due to the loss of jobs. Many of the children also have genetic disorders because of consanguinity (inbreeding) And because of that require extended hospital stays. The Amish do not have medical insurance and therefore pay out of pocket. A day in the neonatal ICU costs several thousand dollars and I know of several Amish syndromic babies that have stayed there for months. To manage these costs, the community. Pools their Funds together to pay for the hospital stay but due to the loss of jobs, this is straining for the entire community. Speaking of the children, the Amish also have somewhat of a poor insight into Occupational hazards. They have branched out into the branched out into tobacco farming to make ends meet. Many of the children are exposed to the nicotine because they are tasked with processing the leaves. They (children) also handle chemical pesticides without any protection. The amount of trauma in the Amish peds population is also unreal. Children come in with horrific accidents such as following from silos or being crushed by a horse, and then they are neurologically devastated. The parents are also very antsy about leaving because they are paying out of pocket so sometimes they ask to take their kid with a brain bleed home. This is just my personal observations as a physician who treats the Amish population.

DøW Lucifer I disagree. This is relatively accurate. I’ve lived in an Amish community my entire 45 year lifetime. I know them VERY well. It would be difficult to communicate all of the in and outs and the exceptions to the rules but I would say this video actually sums it up pretty well. There are different orders of Amish and different church districts and different communities. They all have different variations. The Swartzentrubers are actually perhaps more strict than this video portrays. I live in Holmes/Wayne County. We have the largest Amish community in the world. Pennsylvania is second. There are communities in North East Indiana, Wisconsin, upstate New York, Sarasota/Fort Lauderdale Florida, Mexico etc.... I’m sure they all have different variations and then throw in the Mennonites which go closely hand and hand with the Amish here in Holmes County and you open up a whole nother can of worms.

There life style isent different. They are just living like how people have been living for hundreds of years. What I mean by that is that they are just living like the years before 1900 if that makes sense. It’s really not that big of a deal

My family came from Mennonites which were an early sister denomination to Amish. There's a couple differences between the Amish you described and the old order Mennonites but overall very similar

Amish actually do use electricity quite often. It’s weird, they aren’t allowed to have it in the house, but often times they will have game consoles in their barns, along with phones, etc.

I live near many Amish (Grove City, PA). Have employed some on my 33 acres over the last 22 years. Speaking from experience, they are the opposite of happy and intelligent, and the epitome of brainwashed and inwardly sad. It's 100% the step just below North Korea. Cheers.

WRONG. Yes, the Amish DO USE electricity, but they generate it themselves, rather than buying it from an electric company, in the belief that the nuisance factor will keep them from using it for frivolous purposes. They use it for cash registers, for instance, and to recharge batteries. Batteries that are used on Buggies they use for Travel. Some Amish Communities Might even have a Van/Truck or Small bus for the need of Longer Travel distance. But Rarely used for short travels or means of everyday use.

Absolutely! Some communities are more traditional, but many have utilized some modern technologies to improve their daily life in a way that still follows their beliefs and values.

@@Cc_jr More and More Amish Communities every year, start to adopt bit by bit of Modern technologies. When I lived up in New York years and years ago. There was a couple Amish Communities nearby where I lived. I actually enjoyed going over there when i was a kid and spending time. Few of the People there, even showed me how to do the stuff they did. Tend the animals, do farming stuff. When I was older. Was even taught how to Hook up horses to the buggy and how to drive them. When I turned 12. They let me Drive the buggy alone and actually was able to do some of the Deliveries. In a way I do miss it. but even then. They had Pickup trucks, Horse hauler trailers, couple vans and a Small School bus. Some of the people even had basic just Electric lights. The Amish Family I hung around. had a Telephone too. Only 1 other Family had a Telephone. but, the phones were more for emergencies and business related.

I’m confused why everyone is commenting about how much they “respect” the Amish like they are literally depriving themselves are so many things in the world … and not even materialistic. So many opportunities, experiences, and evolving can be found thru our world. This is honestly sad. Feel bad for anyone born into this cult
@Vlogversity3 жыл бұрын
Not to mention basic emotion and freedom to live for yourself. I mean you can’t even enjoy yourself or who you are. Just do whatever your parents tell you and lay out for you. No extra curriculars, barely even any education. Why choose to live as literal vegetables?? Like wtf
