I’m moving to Prague in May to take my TEFL, and I have to say, your videos make me extremely excited to make the trip. Also, watching these makes me realize that you really have to work your way up and pay your dues to get to a comfortable point teaching in Prague. Knowing that has helped give me more realistic expectations for when I make the move. Thank you for the videos.

I had no idea that being an English teacher involved so much travelling around the city. It seems that you spend as much time travelling as teaching.
@paulcolto
@paulcolto 5 жыл бұрын
Anthony Lauder Hey Anthony, thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. It’s true I travel around the city quite a lot. This was quite an extreme example, normally I try to tailor my day to have the journeys to and from the city from home in the morning and then a maximum of two journeys between lessons. As you stay in Prague longer, you become more adept at doing this. But there are lots of jobs available in primary or secondary schools where you will be in the same place all day. It’s up to you, you can see what works for you when you arrive. Travelling between lessons is great if you have a good pair of headphones and a good book! PC

Hey Colto! First of all, love your channel and the way you present things, good job! Secondly, you said in the comment section that there are plenty of jobs available in the public school sector, my question is how hard is it to get into the system and teach in those schools (why dont you work there). And third, can you recommend any good videos or people who know the differences between Prague and Brno? I really cant decide in which city i want to be...not just those two... Thanks man!
@paulcolto

Thank you so much for your nice comment! Prague and Brno are both fantastic cities. I would start in Prague for logistical reasons (airport, administration offices) and then if you feel like a change try Brno. Good luck!

Hey man I'll be taking my TEFL course in February (in Prague) & planning on becoming an English teacher there Do you think as a newcomer I'd have much of a chance to get into some afternoon & night time classes ? Since I'm REALLY not a morning person & everything earlier than 10 a.m for me is literally the most counter-productive time during the day^ Btw thanks a lot for your videos; keep up the great work :) Cheers^

I was thinking of moving over the summer and getting my TEFL certificate through The Language House. Do you have any advice on how to get a job teaching English to adults rather than teaching kids at a school?
@paulcolto
@paulcolto 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Richard, thanks very much for your comment. The Language House will be able to all your questions like these :) Most language schools in Prague will be happy for you to only teach adults if that is your preference. I would probably avoid any langauge school that tries to force you to take classes that you would prefer not to teach. Good luck! PC

Hello Paul! I was wondering if you have any advice for moving to Prague as a couple? My partner and I will be moving from the U.S to Prague this summer to take a TEFL Course at The Language House. Also, thank you so much for making all of these very helpful videos!
@paulcolto
@paulcolto 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Selina, thanks for watching and for your comment :) Good things about moving to Prague as a couple - cheaper rent if you share an apartment (though I'd recommend ideally sharing with other people who have lived here for some time or alternatively with fellow TEFL folks for the first 6 months to a year at least), somebody who knows you well to support you every step of the way, grow closer through the shared experience etc etc. Potential bad things: stopping you meeting as many new people. One of the most vital and enriching things of moving to a new country is all the new people you will meet and then friends that you will make. I've known one or two couples who came to Prague and meeting new people wasn't as easy for them, so I guess my candid advice would to not be jealous if each of you makes new friends but to be as supportive and positive as possible about it. I also think there are some really formative moments like when you have to go to some office building and navigate a meeting or appointment without knowing the language and battling your way through - in my experience it's vital to go through these moments on your own, believe it or not these experiences can gift you a new confidence that you never lose. Be prepared the first few months are extrememly tough - they are amazing and unforgettable but they are also full of very challenging experiences - moving to a new continent, finding a new job, trying to learn the basics of a new language, meeting a lot of new people, organising visas, unplanned expenses, finding accommodation and not to mention the intensity of the TEFL course itself. I am not trying to scare you off I promise! I am just trying to prepare you and warn you in advance that it will be very intense and difficult and a rollercoaster, though it will settle down after a few months. I would research the experiences of other couples who have done something similar to what you are planning and I also really invite anyone else out there to share their experience and advice on this here too. I hope this helps, I've tried to be as honest as possible. Good luck! PC

Hi, Does age matter if one is willing to apply to work there? Coz I'm 44 years old but look young and energetic with over 23 years of teaching experience. And one more question, is it easy for a nonnative English speaker to get a job there? I currently teach English in Turkey with work permit. Oh, by the way, I have MA in English Language Studies. Thanks for your attention in advance.

I'm so glad you find the videos useful :) Healthcare is first class. As a freelancer you'll pay around 2000czk a month and you're pretty much covered for everything except dentistry. There are teachers here over 65. What I would recommend is getting in touch with 2 or 3 language schools in Prague and asking them. Good luck!

Typically you need a degree and also a TEFL certificate at the very least. Levels of income from ESL differ from country to country and region to region. There are plenty of online guides that will give you a typical estimate for each country. Good luck and thanks for the comment! PC

@paulcolto 5 жыл бұрын
Haha BRILLIANT question! I answer this in my video on time-saving tips for an ESL teacher which you can watch here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYvXpomAhL1rqbs Basically I do all my planning and preparation in one go, ideally Friday afternoon or Monday morning so I don't have to be planning all week and I also make a starter pack for each student before our first lesson which has the lesson materials for at least the first 7-8 lessons. Thanks very much for your comment! PC

Is it necessary to know Czech?
@TheTruthIsFiction
@TheTruthIsFiction 3 жыл бұрын
No but it's necessary to for you to be married or to have a friend who will be doing the same thing as you. You will not survive in Prague by yourself. Can you imagine getting 20000 CZK per month and paying 15000 CZK for the rent? All the TEFL teachers I knew in Prague were either married to a Czech or had friends they could share their apartments with. Nobody was alone. In my home country, if you're alone, it would be better to stay unemployed than be a teacher in Prague.
