MOVING TO #PRAGUE: ‘WHICH #AREA SHOULD I LIVE IN?’ 🤔 Prague is divided into a number of #districts and numbers 1-10 are those closest to the #city #centre and the #downtown area. They all have their #pros and #cons and in this video I aim to give you a brief overview of each and I invite others to comment below so viewers can get a range of opinions on the wonderfully contrasting options available to you if you are thinking of moving to Prague.

I do agree with your view. I am a local, so my needs are probably slightly different from expats. But I prefer Prague 6 - Bubeneč. It is a quite residential area, with a huge park (Stromovka) and just two metro stations away from the center (10 mins) and within walking distance from the Prague Castle. But it is not much going on here, I would even call it boring, but ... I like boring :D

unzicek Hi, thanks for your comment. I must explore Bubeneč - I like sleepy neighbourhoods! Mine is quite sleepy in Prague 10 too. I have some friends who live in Krymska for example and they say the noise can be REALLY annoying. Stromovka is such a fantastic park and they always seem to be working on it to make it even better. Can you recommend a good pub or restaurant in Bubeneč to give me a good excuse to visit?

You are talking about Bubeneč and Dejvice - area connected to Dejvická and hradčanská metro stations on line A. Buillt in 1920´s to end of the WW2 - for middle class, all other areas from that time in the 6th district are huge very expensive villa areas in a cost of few mil Euros.. Its a bit sleepy - a lot of state officers live there, an d it has also been gentrified by upper middle class fammilies - mostly russian speaking with unlimited cash and multinational families form all around embassyies.

For those coming for the first time, I'd recommend Vinohrady, the part of Žižkov near to Jiriho z Podebrad, Holesovice, Karlin, Bubenec and Smíchov. =)

Great job! I have lived in Vinohrady, Letna and now 18 years in Bubenec. They are all great. Vinohrady is the most elegant and the most expensive. A few weeks ago I was walking down the main street in the area and there were 4 mattress shops over 3 blocks selling mattresses for $10,000 apiece! Letna is younger and more hip. Bubenec is the least pretentious. Less elegant facades, but great pubs and parks. All 3 are close enough to the center to walk.

I did my Erasmus in Prague. Lived in Vinohrady, just behind Namesti Miru and absolutely loved the area. Would definitely recommend although I hear Airbnb has pushed the rents up a lot recently. Would also recommend Zizkov. Loved going to U Sadu for the comically bad service and great beer....!

Prague 4 is really big and it goes from almost city centre to the edge of Prague so it depends.

I hate P4, makes no sense, no logic. I live near Budějovická, P4 is made of totally different places that have no connections, style or even community to themselves. Krč is like cut in the middle, Krč is rich villa area and also totally brutal panel house area. When i say im from here people dont know if I mean the ugly panel area or calm and beautiful family house area. Why? Districts should have some logic based on some elements or history.

Vinohrady is expensive part for "better" people, if you have money for that, go there, but think abou that, it's noisily and bussy part of Prague. I was living in Vinohrady 1 year on I.P. Pavlova and there is always someone screeming under windows and you can feel metro under building. :-D I would recommend Vršovice (I am borned there) - it's still near to center, but it's district for normal people without all that hipster caffés and restaurants, streets are wide, good for walking and you have park Grébovka (there are vineyards, it's under Vinohrady district). Buildings are mainly from 20s or 30s. Bad thing is there is no metro, but you can get to the center easily by tram. If you want more hipster looking and more expensive districts, you can choose Holešovice or Karlín, but this districts are completely under water in case of floods. If you want silent, peace and nature around, you can go to one of the housing estates from communism era (with typical concrete buildings), it maybe doesn't look good, but believe me - life there is much better than in center and it's better for shopping, supermarkets, hypermarkets and big shopping centers are always near. In center you can't just go to nearest supermarket and buy food for week because it's overpriced very often. PS: Prague 4 is very big district, there are also parts like Braník, Krč etc....it's not only "paneláky". And don't swim in Hostivařská přehrada, it's very dirty.

EDIT: It looks like Vršovice is now more hipster than I remember, I moved from there in 1999, in that time it was very dirty with all that weird pubs with super cheap beer, but it's large district, you can find what you need there. :-)

Hi Paul! My Czech wife too, told me about the correct meaning of Vinohrady. We also live in Prague Holesovice some months a year. We basically reside in Milan, Italy, but live also in the Alps and Prague.

I love prague 2. I stay across the road from Vinohradský Pavilon all the time. But I love prague 3 as well. Botas 66 is an awesome brand. I've been to Prague 10 out to as far as Skalka Metro station. Its a bit rough so i guess that would Be Affordable to live there. I Love Flora too. Great shopping centre.... Oh and I love Hradcanska too. But I don't know if that's affordable. I'm really surprised how save I've felt walking around Prague in the early morning drunk. Anyways great video. Oh and the other Prague castle's awesome too. Ha ha

Hi Paul: Nice energetic and enthusiastic video. I have only visited Prague once but would love to go back .I found the people very friendly and warm. Same thing goes for the restaurants I went to. The employees seemed to bend over backwards to make ones experience to be a good one. I also loved the cafes/restaurants where jazz groups played. I don't remember which area I stayed in but I think it was fairly central. However, you mentioned so many neighbourhoods and it would have been helpful if you added a simple diagrammatic map to show the positions within the city. Otherwise, lovely video. D

You have missed one of the greatest places to stay which is at prague 4 = podoli and location around vysehrad. That place is next to Vltava river, close to Naplavka... just few tram stops from old town. I believe that Podoli is the safest quarter of the city also. Try also to take the bike from vysehrad down south by the river... there is looooong route full of nice places to relax and get some refreshments.

A little update since this review was released: Prague 8 (Karlin) is one of the most expensive districts nowadays (if I dont count Prague 1 and 2). Its well reconstructed and renovated. Pleny of big companies, cafes, events, and so on... and all that with not much car traffic. Plus its basically on central BUS station and 1 stop from central TRAIN station..

Hi Paul, great video, love your enthusiasm. My wife and I are going to start our World Living lifestyle and plan on living in certain cities for 3 -6 months. My wife is an artist and I'm a struggling writer. ;) My question is about renting a furnished apt and the best way of doing that in Prague. Would it be better and less of a hassle to rent a place via AirBnB or HomeAway or seek out a local real estate company to find a place for us? 2.20. I recognize this place. It's "Planeta Zizkov". Rather than this restaurant, I recommend on the opposite side of the street (visible in this picture through the door) a restaurant called "U Slovanske lipy". Food is delicious there. Moreover they brew their own fantastic beer. If you go there, try to be served by Tomas. I reviewed both restaurants on Tripadvisor.

I just stayed in Prague 9, near Strizkov. Very residential and organised, 15 mins from the centre. Obviously not as beautiful as Vinohrady or Letna but we had a bit of a wander around Nove Dablice and it was totally okay. Am thinking of moving to Prague myself and I quite liked Zizkov (the tunnel is pretty handy for getting to Karlin) and the bit of Holesovice nearer the Troja most where it's a little quieter. Good guide though, never visited Vrsovice.

In Prague I think you'd definitely get some curious customers in their twenties and students popping in but I fear the older generations are quite set in there ways like in most countries!! But you are under water every few years. :-D My grandparents are living there and everytime when there is big rain we have fear about them because situation in 2002 was really bad. If someone think it's old history and today we have barriers against water, think again. We had barriers in metro too and it was under water because nobody activated that. :-D I prefer for living places which are not under river. :-D

you must know about the Czech Republic that you may be perjury convicted, without being able to defend yourself in court without knowing that there is a lawsuit against you. You will find out about the court decision, with a sentence "without the possibility of appeal", when your bank accounts are blocked and you will receive a decision on the execution of your sentence. Anything on the current state of justice and law in the Czech Republic cannot be changed, as it would be punished by the European Union as a violation of the rule of law. This is my own experience from 2018 in the Czech Republic.😀👍

I never understood what a hipster city block looks like. All these descriptions are pointless because it all depends on the individual. City blocks can be divided in only couple of groups, its wheather industrial or residential, there is no third..maybe third would be like a high end city block where all the rich people and embassies are, those are always located in a remote and green part of the town. Every city is the same, you can enjoy and have fun in every part of them if you know how and with whom.

I agree with Prague 1 and 2 but the rest of the districts is simply too big to with many very different parts to generalize.

For example Prague 4 is not block of flats everywhere. There is also Podolí (where we used to live) in walking distance to vyšehrad, náplavka, žluté lázně and with good availibility of public transport. Line C in walking distance (or 1-2 stops by bus), frequent trams to center going through Palackého/Karlovo náměstí (B line and trams&buses hub). Communist era block of flats are mainly around Pankrác and Budějovická. But I would not say that generally about Prague 4. There are much bigger "Sídliště" on the outskirts that is czech term used for districts made mostly from those precast concrete block of flats

Depends what partition of Prague you using. Most of native Praguers are using old partition created by post office with only 10 Pragues, so Prague 4 and 10 are very large then, but many non native Praguers are using that weird thing with 22 Pragues. But I agree, you can have Podolí, Braník or Krč in Prague 4 with first republic architecture and you can have also massive panelák walls in Prague 4.

Prices have shot up over the past couple of years in the nicest bits of Prague. I live in Vinohrady, and was shocked to see recently a 1 bedroom flat in the same building as mine for 46,000 kc a month. I was even more shocked to see (wait for it) a 3 bedroom flat for 138,000 kc a month. Admittedly, these two examples are a bit extreme, but rents are going up so quickly that they won't be extreme for long.

@@ludwigvonn9889 You would be very lucky to find a two bedroomed flat in P1 or P2 for that price these days. I would say closer to 1,000 euros, and much more if you want a nice place.

@@AnthonyLauder Yeah, i spoke to some realtors and i was so depressed after it lol.. the prices are going insanely up... I think everything above P6 should be doable for under 500 €, 2 bedrooms if you're lucky i guess. I'm so pissed because of the prices, i cant even...

Generaly in Prague (in places where normal people are living) rent of 3 room flat with normal kitchen is something around 16 000 CZK (650 eur cca) + electricity and water. Cheapest flats in Prague are around 480 eur, but you can always rent only room or something like that if you are alone.

All the people l see in the show,getting jobs are young. Do senior citizens get the same jobs easily? Please be honest

Depends on what job is that, ofcourse for shops and services they prefer young pretty people. But if you are for example cabinetmaker or something like that, I think people and companies can value experiences. But for shops and services you don't need any extra experiences so they prefer young people. Today we have only 3% unemployment so even older people have good chance to find job because there are no people. Problem with Prague is there are mainly shops, services and offices. Shops and services are for unqualified people mainly directly from school and it's bad paid and for office work you really need good contacts, they don't giving such job to common people from street. If you are from worker family you have very low chance to get office job even when you have better education than half of that company. People are judged by their origin here very often, they will recognize you don't belong to their class.

@@rigifali You know how does it work, answering to the job offers is wasting of time, you have to know someone in that company or contact someone there and speak with him. If you looking for qualified job in some factory for example, it's better speak with master of production there than with HR manager who is idiot very often and don't even know what people they need. Today we have such deficit of people that I can give you job even as ordinary employee.

@@rigifali I think most of such workers will be replaced by some software in the future, people should think more about future, I am working in automatisation and robotization in factory, I have no fear about job in the future. But when I am in our office I see most of that people doing nothing, they are on facebook, watching youtube etc...one person educated in that can easily replace 5 people in office I think, companies and employers are stupid and non effective.

@@rigifali I am speaking about that we have more people in offices than we really need. If you have company with 100 people and 10 of them are in office you can be sure minimaly 5 of them are doing exactly nothing. ;-)

@@rigifali We are furniture factory with cca 100 people, most of office work is doing directly our owner and 2 another people and our co-workers from Germany. But we have 10 or more people in the office. We have one computer from there and there was 200GB of downloaded movies. :-D Terrible think is they are making many mistakes and we, people from "down" have to solving their mistakes, they are mostly friends or family of owner so I really hate that. Especially their knowledge of Czech language is terrible, I would be fired from school for such sentences as they are writing and they should be more educated than people who are working down in workshops.

4 days ago i thought, i'd try a change of scenery, try another country of europe to find a job and settle.. After a few researches i found out, a sa Black man, Almost Nowhere in eastern europe am i welcomed, but too in serious Danger for my life. CR is no different, i really believed Tolerance, Acceptance and Humanity were the master words leading the country.. Little did i know; racism, spremacism, murderers, police harrassment, isolation and ostracism were the main motos of czech rep. towards whoever is .....different ...or Not...!!!!!????!!!!! Really this strikes me funny; What is in the dna of these eastern people to be filled with this presomption of "superiority" and so much hate..???!!! Surely they have deficiencies in their genetic make up, explaining this thirst for a Constant fight, if they do not find a "gypsy" or a Black man to hate, they'll end up killing their neighbors who look just like them, their own family even... it's Just Who They Are...!!!!

If you want to believe that about African countries..you're free, besides Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe you people are Safe and pretty much like Kings...Also not to forget, if you were to feel a bit threatened, all the "good and great " white people have done to generations and generations and generations of African children, mothers and fathers, so a bit of resentment is somewhat understandable.....No...??!! But i am pretty sure those Sudanese students who lost their lives 3/4 years ago, were murdered because of their skin...??!! I Never played the "victim card", i Always try to "educate" people by being a good and honest guy, but i experienced racism more than often, even today, in my country; france, life is Tough, yet if i choose to keep on traveling it's because of my good nature....i just don't want to experience being stabbed to death, or rejection from everyone and being ostracized by all, where i am not forced to live, a place that i would have chosen for the character rural of the country..!!! last but not least, i gather from your name, you are not a native from Czech Rep., you are the Only one who responded, otherwise, it seems most of the Czechs are agreeing being called "murderous racists"...!!!!
