This is an accurate portrayal of a typical day in the life of what I do as an unemployed mechanical engineer with 4+ years of experience. I got my Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Boston University and Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tsinghua University.
The goal of this video is to share some of the struggles I face as an unemployed engineer throughout the job hunting process and how to live in the moment as well as deal with rejection/uncertainty.
If you are having trouble finding a job, don't fret because we all go through trials and tribulations before something great happens. The important thing is to live life to the fullest, learn from your mistakes, and never give up. It's only a matter of time before your next job offer!

Bro, love you. Everyone should enjoy their breakfast. But so many tomatoes (nightshades) and daily eggs could be detrimental. I've done the research. Letme know if you want to know more. If you get asian alcohol thrush, you could replace the breakfast with a diverse choice. I hope this is not a daily routine, that's where these two items may become risky over long time.

I say all this because after a year of eating 2-4 eggs in the morn for work breakfast, I got fatty liver. Although you got some green tea or jiao gulan there, should be good.

I'm a middle age mechanical engineer in a small company in a small city in the mid Atlantic US. We have the hardest time finding decent applicants. I get the impression most young folks focus all their attention on large companies or a few hotbed cities. There are plenty of small companies that would love to have applicants with your credentials. Don't forget to look under the little rocks too. Good luck!

I'm not from the US but I also found one of my first engineering jobs in a small-to-mid sized company after finishing bechelor's in uni. It's messier than huge companies but there's more opportunities to get closer to the manufacture process itself and get involved more directly with all stages of your projects. You can talk to the laser operators, welders, assemblers and improve yourself as a designer via direct feedback. That way you not only learn the best theoretical solutions but also all the small practical but extremely important nuances they don't teach you in higher education.

@scottp1100
@scottp1100 Жыл бұрын
@@shaunjay6040 Agree somewhat - Copper is used in things like wires, microstrip and coupled waveguide PCB traces, but it is very rarely in things like machined parts, antennas feeds, waveguide, roof mounts, ladders, washing machines, etc. You need to have a special use for it like enhanced electrical or thermodynamic conductivity. Aluminum variants like 6060 and 6061 are used everywhere. If someone wasn't well versed in when to use aluminum vs copper, that would be an interview fail. Copper costs a fortune and produces more toxic byproducts. Even when used (like handle bars for bacterial breakdown or electroform on waveguide for antennas), it's only a very thin layer of electroplating. Cost vs performance is a huge factor in all engineering choices. Copper is also three times as dense. You aren't going to make a space shuttle or airplane heat sinks out of it let alone a metal roof. If I was interviewing a mechanical or electrical engineer, and they said copper is best in all or even a majority of cases, then that would be a bad answer.

It is the fastest way to shoot your career and job security in the foot. You should be focusing on small to mid size companies where you can become a subject matter expert on a niche industry. Preferably a Tier 2 supplier. THAT is where you settle into a position that will whether just about any economic storm.

Im 69 and a retired electrical engineer and IT manager, I was laid off a couple of times in my working life but always just walked into another job within days but it was still stressful as I had a family etc. However what I didnt have was a huge education debt and massive competition in the workplace and I really feel you all you young guys who have heaps to offer and are being put through this incredibly stressful and demoralizing situation, while it might be a little relief to know you are not the only one it doesnt really help. I wish you well and I hope that this do work out for you. Companies are different these days, it would have been my recommendation not to change jobs often but I know there is no loyalty these days and its the companies fault in my opinion. So I cant offer you any advise other than try not to let this get you down. By the way I am retired but over my life time I have built up a very good workshop and I now have more work than I want fixing stuff that nobody else wants to attack so maybe building up your own personal resources is something to seriously consider when you do get back on your feet.

You need experience. Get it anywhere. University kids are useful for writing macros and short bits of code or doing FEA on generally safe applications. You need to obtain real-world experience with customer interaction on unique projects. After a while they all become ~the same. Your diploma means nothing....It just lets you in the door and allows you to observe others. Small shops are great as are larger engineering firms....but what you find is that tasks are simply spread out in larger firms....and it becomes harder to assign blame or take responsibility. Smaller shops = fuller experience....but greater responsibility. Smaller shops will progress you to your own business/corp faster.....but large corporations are a valuable experience so you learn how your customers operate. You need to relate to the high end engineering folk while also appealing to the maintenance crew. If you can appeal to maintenance....Engineering usual doesn't bark, provided it's a solid concept/design in the first place. Again...Experience... No one is out to stop you but yourself. You can't offer shit to anyone ...if you have not seen some yourself.

ME's are problem solvers because they enjoy solving problems. A person can get a ME degree because they think it's their ticket to earning cash to pursue their actual dreams like becoming a Tuber, or cooking, or whatever. They have no interest in mechanical engineering. They're do the work when forced. Most of their day is spent wishing they were someplace else. Those are not problem solvers. People actually interested in solving problems are not very common. Companies hire all kinds of people. Most are the type they have to force to work. Throw 20 MEs at a problem to get some result. But 1 ME interested in their work can get even better results. I was a software engineer in my career, worked in 14+ startups. Many of us worked 60+ hours a week and in our spare time wrote more code for other projects we wanted to do. We would have worked for free, and many did on side jobs. All that supercharged our skills. I did work with a few who really didn't like software engineering. Looked miserable to me. They were very intelligent and could get some work done so were kept on.

I never remember wishing I was working somewhere else...although that's probably more of a human nature thing. Yes, ME's do it all. That's why we adapt and become millionaires and retire early. ME's that couldn't cut it where you worked were just not taught well enough...drive is everything, no matter what Engineering degree you get. I’m actually surprised that mechanical engineers are having a hard time finding employment. I would’ve thought they would always be in high demand since it seems it was one of those fields like healthcare where we never have enough workers despite more programs over the last few decades and lots healthcare workers immigrating from places like Nigeria, India & China. It could be worse at least you have your degrees, many have debt w/o them. It may make more financial sense to make it less money and work for government/non-profit so you qualify for income based re-payment and discharge the loans after 120 payments (10 years). Don’t feel too bad, many STEM majors are not working in their field. Most importantly, you have a good degree from a reputable school and a foundation in math/science so its relatively easy to teach yourself new skills (after all that hell you went through in school) and its not hard to train STEMs for new skills. It does suck but, this is a time to explore options you never would’ve imagined. Many skilled, blue-collar and unionized workers make 6 figures (200k+) some don’t even have a HS education.

"I’m actually surprised that mechanical engineers are having a hard time finding employment" Yes, most people outside the field are. The Mechanical Engineering field is like the fields of: -Law -Acting -Professional Sports. There are too many people who want to be in that job, and not enough jobs for them. You know how in the Hollywood profession, it is possible for a successful actor to make one bad movie, and then get washed up? Go from a premium to a discount? The same is true for the Mechanical Engineering field. If your work record has too many short-term jobs on it, then you look like a job hopper. If your work record has too long of an employment gap on it, then you look like you are too out of practice. These are factors that can make a mechanical engineer all washed up. They get into a dilemma similar to what ex-convicts have.

I worked 16 years as a ME engineer for my first employer right after graduation. Completely burnt out at the end of my stint there so I quit. Took a couple years off to recover. Rediscovered my love for engineering so I went back university and did a masters, as well as a 1 year cert in AI. By then I was 50 and found out the hard way I am now radioactive waste as far as employability goes. Grateful to be working as a researcher in a large, well regarded research institute but I yearn to return to industry. In four years since my masters I have applied for numerous jobs in industry but only 1 interview. Age discrimination is for real. I guess I will start my own high tech engineering firm when one will employ me.

Unfortunately I also think a major factor for the job search being tough is that you got your Masters in China. Had you gotten it from the US -- probably would have better luck. Right or wrong -- given the current geopolitical narratives, that's a negative for some US companies. I agree with some of the posters here that going to a smaller company away from some of the metros is probably a good move if you want to work in the US (sooner).
