In this video, which is part of our day in the life series, we discuss what it was like to be a member of the elite fighting force of the day. Taking vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, they were so well trained that in battle they were forbidden from retreating unless they were outnumbered three to one and yet so devout that they were considered a monastic order. For almost two centuries they were venerated as devout warriors, gathered from across Europe, who would fight on behalf of God and defend the Holy Land. What could possibly go wrong?

Fight for God and preserve Christianity was their facade. If you believe the folklore in France, which actually had to host them, they preferred to spend their time stealing money and assaulting virgins.

June 14, 1284: Woke up late. Protected some pilgrims, only one killed by heathen, not bad. Washed socks. Saw doctor who said I don't have plague but prescribed leeches anyway, better safe than sorry. Prayed to the Lord. Tomorrow I will repaint my shield. Not the best day, but not the worst.

A very important fact which is rarely mentioned: the Order of the Temple is not completely gone, they changed names. Because of their help during the process of the _Reconquista_ (when the Iberian Peninsula fought to expel the Moors) the Templars were awarded several properties and privileges. Only a few years after the persecution in France (in 1319), King Dennis (D. Dinis) of Portugal transferred all the assets and legal privileges of the Templars in Portugal to a new order, The Order Of The Militia of Jesus Christ. This happened so those properties (and their revenue) were not transferred to the Order of Malta before the old Order was completely extinguished. So the people and property of the old Order lived on and served in a different capacity, in a different place, after this was allowed by a papal bull ( _Ad ea ex quibus_ ). Those who remained were "absorbed" into the new order and retained their capacity and position as Knights. There are several Templar military buildings, churches, temples and chapels in Portugal which have remained attached to the principles and duties of the Templar Order, and its symbol, the red cross on the white background, was featured on the sails of the ships that braved the oceans in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Order survives to this day, and it has a Grand-Master: he (or she) is the person in the position of President of the Portuguese Republic. One of the largest and most well-preserved buildings of this age is the Convent of Christ in the Portuguese city of Tomar, quite famous for its connections to the Order of the Temple.

Side Note, pope Clemnt V HAD to relent : he had been elected thanks to intervention of Philip the Fair, after the latter had culminated a feux with his predecessor Boniface VIII by an assault and insults that seem to have precipitated Boniface's death, the Italians were so incensed at this that the French pope had to flee Rome and settle in Avignon, right in the French king's influence area... basically, he was a pupper pope.

@Roywebcafe

The Hospitalers were a Benedictine order and later owned Rhodes then Malta and have been around as a military order from 1098 until the Napoleonic age. Famous for Hospitals in the medieval age. The Templars died out as a military order as shown in video and were also famous for the origins of Banking. Hospitalers were known for wearing black with white maltese cross then later Red. And Templars white with red cross. Also the Templars were from a Cistercian order which is why they wear white.

Yes, they started out as Roman Catholic spies which began gaining many scrolls of Scripture before the Bible was completed. This affected their understanding of God and placed them in conflict with Roman church and Pope. All claiming to be of the original group today have no documents or archaeological facts to back up their claims. When one becomes a 33 degree Scottish Rite Fre-Mason he is given the title; "Knights Templar", so in that sense my great grandfather and some others in my family would hold to that claim. I am a Christian Presbyter of the Ancient Antiochene Church and I give lectures and teach online.

I don't think any of these kings or the pope actually believed in God, for them it's just a tool to gain power and wealth, if they believed in hell, they surely would know that falsely accusing and burning the templars would actually be a blasphemy. and they would deserve the deepest hole in hell for this travesty.
