The Ugly Renaissance: Sex, Greed & Violence in an age of Beauty by Alexander Lee. Great book. This period for Europe was by no means innocent of vile disgusting acts

Does modern society really not think gayness existed before now? And sex trafficking is a modern thing as well? Slave ownership? Long as humans have been humans certain behaviors have occurred. Christianity has taken over the world most definitely, but it can't erase history. Nowdays, no one cares what your sexuality is, as long as it's 2 adults and you're not throwing it in the air or putting it on your kids, but I can understand why sodomy was frowned on, it's literally sticking a private part up an area where excrement comes out of, and yes, it doesn't produce children which is important to some people. The male dominance aspect is strong today as before, its just all that maleness and testosterone, gotta have an outlet and mate with everything. We as humans, for a very long time, feel the need to dominate and stick our dicks in everything from each other, to animals, to little kids, sexuality is at our core like it or not and it hasn't really changed.

Interesting and gruesome. However, it does not describe how homosexuals actually lived their lives in the Middle Ages. Less known, far more interesting though.

I really enjoyed watching that so well done on putting it together. Isn't it crazy how 1,000 years of 'our story' (humanity) can be condensed into 15 minutes or so?..... all those huge events that happened in their time that would have dominated the lives of so many people at the time now seem almost irrelevant and trivial to most people today.... it makes you wonder what events of today will be put in a video in 500-1000 years time about now..... probably very little! You might get the Beatles / 60s cultural revolution and you will probably get the rise of the internet and the effects it had on globalisation, but other than that.. the politics, market crashes, wars, even the covid pandemic probably won't even amount to a second's worth of content!

I watched 2/3 of my friends die of AIDS back in the 80s and 90s. When it first started, no one knew what it was and there was great panic. It was a terrifying experience to see a friend one day and find out 5 days later he was dead.

I do enjoy your consistant tone and delivery while also heavily implying Justinian was an idiot for thinking homosexuals caused natural disasters, and then essentially saying "not unlike this idiot who lives today" absolutely savage and also really informative.

My wife can trace her family as far back as the Norman conquest of England. The genealogy "tree" one of her uncle's put together by hand show how many children were born in each generation of the first born son or daughter. They survived by having lots and lots of children. How birthing mothers endured that is truly remarkable.

There are mostly religious reasons, not rational reasons, to view homosexuality as essentially different in moral terms than the sex life of an infertile heterosexual. Religious antigay attitudes are pernicious, and turn into religious persecution if they are codified.

"Piss thrower" XD You'd expect that the ultra-religious people from the Middle Ages would be extra mindful of the commandments, but it was the opposite. Women have never had it better and if I was given an option to be transported into any era of my choice, I would politely refuse

Those from that era who beat all odds in surviving long enough to produce offspring and still have living descendants today are our strong and/or lucky ancestors who probably had some strong genes. (Probably). I mean, I'm Indian and India "might" have been better off than Europe in the 14th century, but I don't asusme it was much better off. And I might have Europian ancestors especially on my mom's side.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention how necessary it was to purify the water by turning it into beer. Many people brewed at home, and monasteries did too. You could be fined if your beer wasn’t strong enough.

Oh dear… the 14th Century has nothing to do with the “Dark Ages,” which were at least 500 years before.
