Welcome Janelle 👋 So glad you found us and our shares. I also love to connect with others around to see what can be achieved here. The Dandenongs Collective swap group and Belgrave food garden have been great for that too 😀

Hi, I crush up the egg shells and chop up banana skins and put in the worm farm. 🇦🇺 You're lucky to have willing helpers. 😅

Have you considered cooking the eggshells in the fire pit or wood stove or even in the oven when you are baking? Cooked, crushed and added to water with a bit of vinegar, the calcium becomes bioavailable. Chucked whole into the compost, they take forever to break down. I used to get a couple of bunches of bananas almost every shift when I worked at a grocery store. If you peel a banana, you can split it in 3 by pushing your finger down into either end. Perfect size for dehydrating and takes very little time to get them all onto the tray.

I haven't, and it means I have to physically break down the shells more when adding compost to the gardens. Your advice makes so much sense and it is such an excellent idea. I'm thinking for us, the best option would be to add directly into our wood fire inside, being nice and quick to do so at this time of year when it is running all the time. Thanks a bunch for the banana idea too. There is a bit of extra reason we like the slices. The last way longer. Anything we do in bigger pieces gets hoovered up by the kids 🤣 Thanks a bunch for taking the time to share your ideas. I always love shares and am always still learning too ✨️

@@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus I suspected this was the case with the bananas! I used to just toss the egg shells into the wood stove and then spread the ash on my field in the winter. During summer, I give them a quick rinse as I wash the dishes, let them dry on the counter and store them in a fabric bag hanging on the inside of the cupboard below the kitchen sink. I roughly crush them down in the bag until the bag is full. Then I batch blend them in the blender once every couple of months. Those get bagged (in old zip top cat food bags) until i can bake them on top of the wood stove in a shallow pan. It's really interesting seeing your systems. Thank you for taking the time to film, edit, and post!

Brilliant video 🤩 This length video would have taken so much work and you've done so well. Showcasing all the beautiful things about a homesteading life. I love that your biogas? System uses the cooked bones , it's a challenge dealing with them here because of our animals always finding them in other ways we've tried. What a great home you've built up. I'm so glad you're able to enjoy it now after all it's planning and set up. I'm about to do our sauerkraut today , I'll have to find my kimchi recipe . I have a milder version I want to try . Loved this ❤❤Thank you for sharing lovelies and keep warm ❤❤

I can't say I have ever used that type of salt. We tend to go a natural non-iodised and without fillers.

@anerawewillneverforget 6 ай бұрын
@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus the salt you speak of is a synthetic form of iodine. Celtic salt contains around 90 essential minerals for human health. My personal health and heart health is attributed to the use of Celtic salt. Check out Barbara O'Neill's information on salt.

@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus I've killed one and this one stays in the fridge longer than it is on the bench but has been kicking a while now (: we've got fruit trees and did have some strawberries, broad beans, lettuce etc going and some chooks but cut back for a little while while pregnant with our first... now pregnant again with twins so we don't have much going atm due to being so tired and pregnant 😅 3 under 2 is going to be such an adventure! Loved hearing the great relationship you guys have with your kids in this video too

@stasiamay3237 that will be an adventure indeed 💕. We had two under 2 and it has been fabulous seeing our boys grow up so close in age. But it is a juggle in those early days, so letting some things go, concentrating on the things that we could do that gave us joy, was the way we went. Still need to do that at times!😅

You have a beautiful place. Thanks for showing us the process or at least part of the process for sauerkraut and kimchi. I thought that was interesting. I wonder if you will get more quail and if you have plans for any other animals to add to your mini farm? I have liked, subscribed and commented, and this is the first time seeing your channel. One little tip that maybe you and others don't care about, but if you do, here goes: "Irregardless" is not a word. The word you mean to say is "regardless" No offence meant. I hope you don't take any.

We do actually have quite a few other animals on the property too, but it's still up in the air on adding more quail. They have always been our eldests and he has had these from raising them. Now his last one is getting old, it will be interesting to see if he chooses to raise a new flock.

The bones are for the biogas system, which is a great way to deal with them. Did I accidentally say for the compost? That would be an oops moment on my part.
