Lived in San Jose my whole life, by the San Jose City College. Paramedics saved my life as a baby, now, I'm becoming a fireman/paramedic. Very proud & looking forward to my dream career.

Great video guys! I work for a non-US Fire and Rescue Service in a non-operational role and was wondering what the difference is between the black and light brown kit that you wear?
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment and your contribution to the fire and rescue service! The black kit is our structure gear (also known as bunker gear). It offers the most protection, such as when entering a burning home; however, it's very heavy (typically around 60-70 pounds). The yellow/light brown kit is our wildland gear that is used for wildfires, brush fires, etc... It weighs a lot less (30-40 pounds) and allows crew to quickly maneuver around difficult terrain to combat wildfires.

@@lemonshuh6340 I thought it was just an AM radio station on the dash but good catch on the watch. I guess they must have filmed this at night so they didn't have to go all the way to his house to film, kinda dumb though as they could have just given him a gopro or something for the morning

2:23 What's a probationary Captain, by the way? Heard you mention it, didn't know that was a thing.
Жыл бұрын
When a firefighter is promoted to fire captain, they become a probationary fire captain for one year; during this time, they learn as much as possible about the role and prove that they have what it takes to be a captain.
@alltheworldsastage4785 Жыл бұрын
@ Didn't know they had probation periods for Captains, I thought once you became Captain that was that, but alright, congratulations on the promotion, and thank you for the responses. 🙏🏾

so wait.... what does the captain do during a fire emergency? do they also put out the fires as well? or do they just stay there giving commands?
2 жыл бұрын
A fire captain has many roles. They are primarily front line supervisors responsible for the safety of their crews. Typically, they will initially focus on assessing the situation and giving commands to their crews; however, they may also conduct firefighting operations when the situation is under control. In this video (around 6:20), you can see CA Gutierrez assisting the crews with mop-up operations because at that point the fire was under control.
@Lavabird8272 жыл бұрын
@ So they mostly give commands to the lieutenants?
2 жыл бұрын
@@Lavabird827 It is a large part of their job, yes, but it fluctuates depending on the severity of the incident and when they arrive on scene. It's also a judgement call. If a situation doesn't require supervision, then the fire captain may choose to be more hands-on. In the freeway fire shown in this video, CA Gutierrez was the first to arrive on scene (on that side of the freeway) and so his primary focus was giving directions, monitoring the fire for changing conditions, and making sure his crew was safe.

Thank you for your comment @ECduzitgood. 95% of this video was filmed during the crew's regular hours. Filming was incorporated into that day's schedule and was done in a way as to not interrupt daily operations. In essence, this crew gave up some of their limited downtime in order to help with this video. Otherwise, these videos are not monetized.
