CURRENT SCHEDULE
Expect a new video every Sunday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZbin channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Man we had a bad drought down here in Louisiana as well as texas and most of the southern U.S. So many never got a 2nd and 3rd cut. My uncle has cows and he fed corn fodder and he said his cows ate more corn fodder then they did hay. He said the fodder leaves are what they mostly ate.

I know it seems silly when a regular pocket knife can do it (I had the same thought) but I bought the Sloan hay knife and I love it. I think it would definitely help you with how you reach in over the ring to cut it.

Great video! Mud is the standard for my northern VA area in winter. Be careful with the processed bales, especially since you tip them down to unwrap them. They can slide off the forks. I believe you will prefer processed bales for bedding. Besides smaller stuff to spread, they have a better absorbtion capacity. And DON'T just sample the hay from the edge, you need to go deeper. Your local Extension Office may have a hay sampling probe, and they can direct you where to get it tested. Dry hay can be tested from a windrow sample, just before baling, but you are better off pulling samples from silage bales when you open a row. Smart move checking on nutrition, but protein blocks/tubs can be an insurance policy for the cattle.👍👍

In the past I've used Dairyland labs for nutrient analysis. They're in Wisconsin although I don't remember where. Can get as simple or in depth as you want with there testing.

Check out Redmans salt and mineral. They analyze feed and build mineral blocks for your herd with pallet purchase. Farmer Tyler Ranch utuber just did a process review. The JCB still is a game changer.

Why not store some bales on pallets. They are usually free and would keep the fodder drier. Have seen some farmer do that to a lot of bales. A little extra work but would keep bottom of bales dry

Get one of those hot water pressure washers for the tracks. Or if you have one of those on demand hot waters heaters for the house; add a spigot somewhere to supply hot water to a pressure washer.

I am wondering if a hot water pressure washer cleaning station would be easier to use than a shovel cleaning out the mud on the skid loader?

That would be pretty great, I used to use the water hose but washing every day makes a mess in the yard so I reverted to just using a shovel.
