Far from it. It always ranks as the top Beatles song, and perhaps that's warranted, for lot's of reasons: Sgt. Peppers... final song on side two... Lennon... cool sound... cool lyrics... big finale... But it's mostly just a big production and a big sound... and Paul's middle saves it from being potentially boring. Nice beat, though...credit to Ringo. Better written songs: "Penny Lane" "Hey Jude" "Day Tripper" "Something" "Nowhere Man" (Lennon's masterpiece)

Taotaomona Lennon completed “Strawberry Fields”, “Across the Universe”, “Tomorrow never Knows”, “Come Together”... basically all the Beatles’ truly groundbreaking experimental classics. And this one, I’m glad he wrote “A Day in the Life” as well, but I’m equally glad he didn’t finish it cause that gave GEORGE MARTIN the Chance to shine his magic arrangement/production skills on the Beatles FULL BAND. The contributions from Ringo (drumming on the original -not this one so much- is incredible) & Macca cannot be overlooked.
@SkrGta3 жыл бұрын
@Taotaomona Actually McCartney came up with the piano chords which joined the two songs together . Another old guy - curious to see how a group of young musicians could present not only a very difficult composition, but to recreate the sound from an immensely complex recording process that tore open the imagination of millions of young people at that time. Bravo! Absolutely brilliant and professional. Adding the choir for vocal support to achieve the sonic quality of the "orchestra rise" was a touch of genius. To think that George Martin hired only 42 musicians to play the tracks, and then to use available space on a 4 track recording tape to insert the same performance so that it increased the tonality to where it sounded like 168 instruments was mind shaping for its time. That you were able to bring out the essence of the piece with a smaller group is very commendable. Keep working it. Growth never passes by returns to prior work to provide new perspectives. "A Day in the Life" is a musical arrangement full of secrets and slants that keeps revealing itself.

It's hard to play it live too. There's lots of production, hard thumping and dampening on Ringo's drum parts. I think he did OK considering the venue size and having to do it live.

t's not had to play Beatles music ??? If you mean the songs from the fist period, 1962-1966) I agree but after the Beatles made many complicated compositions. A Day in the life with the scrubbing played specially out of time is not easy to play the same thing for I am the walus.

John Lennon completed “Strawberry Fields”, “I am the Walrus”, “Tomorrow never Knows”, “Rain”, “Across the Universe”, Come Together”... basically almost all the Beatles’ truly groundbreaking experimental classics. And this one, I’m glad he wrote “A Day in the Life” as well, but I’m equally glad he didn’t finish it alone cause that gave him the chance to collaborate with Paul and also GEORGE MARTIN the Chance to shine his magic arrangement/production skills on the Beatles FULL BAND. The contributions from Ringo (drumming on the original -not this one so much- is incredible) & Macca cannot be overstated. This is VERY MUCH THE BEATLES working at their best, as a FULL UNIT
@kdmdlo3 жыл бұрын
No disagreement about Strawberry Fields, and Tomorrow Never Knows. But Across the Universe and Come Together as experimental? Don't think so. In the top 5 list of Beatles tunes would also have to be Eleanor Rigby (McCartney). Written in E minor, Dorian ... it is complex both musically and lyrically.
@hw3434343 жыл бұрын
KM definitely, I believe “Eleanor Rigby” to be Macca’s best song ever. He did receive help lyrically from the others including John and even Ringo, and George Martin did the fantastic String score as he did with “Yesterday” but it’s still my favorite Paul masterpiece. “Across the Universe” to me is the most amazing lyric any Beatle ever wrote. It’s also musically unique as far as the guitar chords/progression. Just a shame it didn’t get a proper production. I believe it to be perhaps the Beatles’ most underrated song because it was never produced with the attention other lesser songs had

Paul said it many times that he just had the "woke up, fell out of bed" part lying around doing nothing. Which means he'd probably written it long prior to them beginning work on Sgt. Peppers and it just never went anywhere as a song on it's own. It just happened to fit in perfectly with what John had just conceived for A Day In the Life. I guess what I'm trying to say is for all their brilliance as song writers, a lot of it was either magic, sheer coincidence, or luck. As in John going "how do we join these verses?"..... (Paul thinking a minute)...... "John, I've got this little bit I wrote a while ago about just getting up and getting out of bed, maybe we can fit it in here somewhere"....... and out comes a brilliant masterpiece.
@hw3434343 жыл бұрын
Joe I hear you but it’s definitely more magic than sheer luck because it happened SO MANY TIMES for them as songwriters!! The Beatles were, among other things, the best band ever at taking advantage of accidents!!! Like John inventing FEEDBACK on Electric guitar cause he stood to close to an Amp and decided he loved the sound so much he wanted to use it for the intro of “I Feel Fine”. Same with the backward vocals at the end of “Rain”, he was stoned and put the tape on backwards and loved the sound that came out 😆. I guess they were searching for these things so much that somehow they found them consistently. They were adventurous. And that’s the only way “A Day in the Life” can emerge, it also help a LOT to have a seasoned arranger/producer like George Martin to join the two bits together so seamlessly.
@joe60963 жыл бұрын
@@hw343434 Yep, a lot of what they did was by accident or sudden little mishaps and mistakes in the studio that most people would have just ignored and went on about their day and never given a second thought to.

The arrangements in Beatles songs were absolutely incredible, Lennon & McCartney were quite simply genius and put together with Harrison & Ringo they are a one in a several generation band! Btw, I was born & bred in Liverpool. I still live not far from where they lived. My Mum's 1st cousin who we are very close with to this day actually knew them as he was a club manager in Liverpool. He's got a few stories about them...one of them includes, John Lennon headbutting some dude who was jealous/paranoid that John was looking at his girlfriend "too much" and so he went after John which ended in him being headbutted! lol
