Hey all, We're going to release this simultaneously here on KZbin and the website going forward! With the weird schedule of having to flip-flop weeks when Yahtzee released a game, it just made it easier to do it this way. Enjoy and remember you can support the work all of our creators do by turning off ad-block on our videos. It helps us out a lot and allows us to fund more new content. Dev Diary will be released every other Tuesday going forward, starting with today's episode. Enjoy! Nick Calandra Editor in Chief

Daytime mechanic: Maybe instead of (or in addition to) the rent, the money could be used for food, if supplies are too low starvation instills and inspiration fades (maximum ammo goes down) and sleep becomes less effective. As such creating another way to have the insurmountable circumstances of the situation slowly crush down on the player. I really love the idea behind why Zann's music is so strange - it not having anything to do with composing music but rather that it has some strange metaphysical property of, erhh, angles.
@Anastas17865 жыл бұрын
Makes sense for Lovecraft. Zahn isn't _trying_ to compose for the Concerts Pasdeloup; his "patron" is an _unknowable horror from beyond the stars_ whose tastes are unlike anything else in creation. He doesn't feel like he has the freedom to ad lib nice-sounding bridges between the requested parts because that might ruin whatever beauty this thing sees in the music and doom us all, so he's powerless to do anything but follow the "suggestions".

@@Mernom The idea is that it slowly crushes down on the player. Which makes sense for cosmic horror. I would like to make 2 suggestions: 1. As the monsters we appease are based on the lights of the city, perhaps as we fail on certain things, the ambient volume of the day-side loop decreases to match. 2. With regard to the rent mechanics: Perhaps give put one more item in the room as a sort of safety net so that if you miss the rent the first time it doesn't immediately wreck your game. Perhaps a painting of some kind on the wall above your desk. Failing that, add in a buy-back mechanic so that if you Busque (I think I spelled that correctly?) enough, you can buy back the items your Landlord sells.

I love the life of Zann game so far, however perhaps you should add a way for the player to recover the bed and the desk. If not its just a delayed game over... My idea would be some sort of store button the player would use through extra money gained on the street to rebuy what ever the land lord took away and maybe objects to recover inspiration and health...
@darksteelhero15 жыл бұрын
Should probably make the bed or desk more expensive to rebuy than to just pay your rent. That way you're incentivised to paying your rent even more
@deebzscrub5 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing, though I imagine you still have rent to pay even when your stuff is sold off so it may be too difficult to make enough money to both pay rent and rebuy your bed. Perhaps instead of losing the ability to sleep and research entirely upon having your stuff sold you would just get less energy/inspiration for doing so as you're now sleeping/researching on the floor, so rather than an explicit game over scenario it's more of a large difficulty boost. Maybe both if he can think of a good way to fit that in.
@Anastas17865 жыл бұрын
I dunno. In the works in the Lovecraft Mythos actually written by Lovecraft _himself,_ a "delayed game over" is generally the absolute best his protagonists can ever hope for. The horror of Lovecraft's personal interpretation of the Mythos comes from the realization that the universe is _already_ doomed, that the Great Old Ones or the Elder Things or whatever _will_ someday destroy us all, and that there's nothing a creature so insignificant as Man can _possibly_ do to _stop_ it as much as it comes from creepy shadow monsters in inconceivable shapes and colors.
@axios47025 жыл бұрын
@@Anastas1786 Yeah, I guess it makes sense specially considering the idea is to make a "lets see how far you get" type of game with no possible victory. I just thought that in the end it still feels like you were defeated because you couldnt pay rent. Although Yahtzee's fix makes it more dramatic. But (to me) the fun in this type of games comes from constantly overcoming seemingly impossible ods even if there is no hope in the end...

I'd say that the Harvest Moon in Space idea is pretty well realized in StarSector. Primary loop is take jobs (bounty hunting, cargo hauling, smuggling, trading, etc.) Secondary loop is upgrade your fleet (improve weapons systems, add more ships, etc.) and improve your relations with the numerous factions (MegaCorp, Space Church, Space Jihad, Military Dictatorship, remnants of the old empire, pirates, etc.) Tertiary loop is to make money, survive/thrive, and explore. Its certainly a very interesting game that I whole recommend you check out, but don't be daunted by its size as its been developed over the course of 9-ish years with frequent updates and mod support and they only just put in Colony building as a mechanic.

2:30 Yahtzee, I have to say, you have utterly blown me away with this transformation. My jaw almost dropped from seeing the city transform from something familiar and recognisable to something that you can't discern but can detect the horror within. It's exactly how I feel going downstairs in the night to get more toilet paper when I can't turn the lights on. You've absolutely mastered the "nothing is scarier" trope. I think this is, visually speaking, your best game so far with the detail and effects you've put into it. Having said that, though, still seeing the chimneys clearly visible in front of the night lights is rather distracting. But I understand that's a petty detail to bother with and I don't hold it against you while you have actual issues of substance to deal with, like the other gameplay loops. Oh, I remember 'Fun Space Game: The Game'! I see it's transformed quite heavily from when you were inspired by 'Dark Void' to make a flying game when the rest of the industry wasn't bothering then and still isn't now (aside from 'Anthem', which still disappoints me). Nothing wrong with that. I think your take on the civilian genre is fresh with a clever twist on the tones and themes. I wish more people would bother with those sorts of twists, like more flying sims with dragons that aren't 'Lair'. Also, name idea: 'Status Report: Nominal'. Something sci-fi but mundane. An operating procedure that you're too relaxed with because it's as familiar as washing dishes or getting dressed. And yes, I know it has that bizarre subtitle for something you're not expecting a sequel for but that's what I could come up with.

I love the "landlord selling your stuff idea", but a way to recoup from that, like paying the rent late, and with additional fees, so that you can possibly recover your bed, desk or anything else, would be a good addition. Or maybe the player has to work a day job to make decent money to pay rent, but it take away time from sleeping and studying so you are less prepared for the night faze, and if you don't work regularly enough you get fired and have to busk, which pays less. Random events that impact your ability to do these things would be cool as well. Your atmosphere of the game and theme is awesome so far, and the city's windows turning into the nightmarish threat is brilliant. Love the Dev Diary episodes, each new one that comes out makes me want to get back to creating my own games again and give me new ideas. I look forward to seeing the final product, Yahtzee!

I’ve had an idea for a horror game with a “sanity meter” where you’re being chased by a monster that gets harder to resist as you go insane, as the character comes to think the monster is actually his wife or something. The way you stay sane is by inflicting harm/wounds on yourself, but you have a limited life meter and you have to be careful about how much harm you do to yourself. that type of parisian building is called "haussmannien", from the guy who organized the reconfiguration of Paris in the 19th century, which saw the creation of those buildings.

Some ideas for the day cycle since you already stated that you need to make money for rent, perhaps you can give the player three ways to do this: 1. Tutor from home: You teach a variety of music students. This gives you a random amount of money, where you can have more hours of the day to do other things but you aren't guaranteed enough cash. 2. Teaching: here you get a medium amount that takes a good amount of the day with enough time to do one other thing. 3. Compose music: here you're given the most amount of money but you lose the whole day and can only be done at the beginning of the day. Each of these can help give you an inspiration buff like Composing can give you something like more powerful notes, Teaching gives slows down the monsters, and Tutoring lets you miss a set number of notes without penalty. I'm looking forward to this game no matter what though.

Might I make a suggestion regarding the viol turned violinist game, I'd suggest maybe doing an optional final boss (make it cod zombies level hard to find if possible) or at least an ending were the main character can walk out on his own terms that comes with an ambiguous ending screen about the consequences of leaving earth defenceless. What do you think fits the theme even though in the book he never leaves but the instrument is wrong so whats the harm in making a cowards ending

Viols come in a variety of sizes, from a small violin size to the big cello size viola de gamba that you mentioned (so called because it is played between the legs due to its size, instead of under the chin).

By the way Yathz, in your Far : Lone Sails Video, you said it reminded you of Night Shift, the way you have to constantly check components to keep a huge machine working. Was it an inspiration for Spacegame ?

Hey Yahtzee it would be pretty cool to see you continue the series after the 12 games by showing progress of your "Space Game" as Dev Diary episodes. This way you hopefully won't procrastinate on working on it all the while receiving criticism and inspiration from the viewers to help make it better. Just a thought anyway great series it's really inspiring me to study up on coding and put my Graphic design and Animation skills to use in Game Dev.

Both games look like a lot of fun! It's cool to see something a little different. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished project. I'm really interested to see what happens with the space game too, that looks like a really neat concept.

I know you want to keep those games short, but what I have a few ideas: * what if you could have more than 1 music instrument? this way Erich Zann can play both the viola and viol and other instrument as well * it will add additional challenge, the monster become more judgmental and after a long time will want a 1 man orchestra * studying different instruments can both give you a learning curve for them * playing outside can let you pay rent, but if you do it quite abit it allows you to buy instruments. this will juggle between money energy and inspiration * adding additional instruments will allow you to sell them if you need to, so they can kinda count as "extra life" as well

Talking about Space Game really shows an important and often overlooked part of creating something. Losing motivation due to fatigue, fear of messing stuff up, due to an insecutiry that people will criticize your work and it won't end as the perfect piece of art you set out to create, fear of realizing all your passionate hours have been for nothing, etc. The channel 2kliksphilip called this "Mid-Development Hell" when talking about game development. So great episode of Dev Diary, Yahtzee! Also, I have a question I have no clue how you would answer or think its relevant as it's regarding your novels, but I got curious when you showed Space Game. Were any of the origins of your novels ideas for a game, or vice versa? For example a story you thought was interesting but realized would be better in an interactive format, or a concept that didn't work as a game as it unfolded but would be great as a novel.

i think maintenance evokes a different feeling than building/growing. The primary loop might seem the same but the former is about keeping things at 100%, feeling like a chore, and the latter is about getting to the 100%, feeling like an accomplishment.

Maybe failure to pay the landlord could result in some sort of mounting disruption mechanic? Where he comes and bangs on your door, disturbing your sleep or your playing, costing you time or making it harder to play. Maybe a low chance or intensity at first but as debt builds up, how often he comes knocking or how hard he knocks and consequently disturbs you will ramp up making it harder and harder to ignore him.

BTW. Violins have the higher pitched strings near the hand on the right (based on the view shown). Would be nice to have higher pitches when using those strings and lower when using the further away strings.

This is starting to look like an awesome game with the sprite work and gameplay! For other enemy ideas, maybe having fewer lights in a line to indicate shorter violin strokes. For example, if you called the one shown in the video Long Starline, this can be called Short Starline, and you could add multiple Short Starlines at a time to ramp up the challenge. Another idea might be having some Advanced Starlines that change length and/or rotate a set angle after a short period of time. You could also add Ghosts, The Color Out of Space, Eldritch Wormholes, a few Eyes here and there, and/or possibly even a False Sun with linear clouds.

I do hope this unknown space game finds its way into our hands. I think it could be a great idea. It's the natural loops of No Man's Sky with a more appealing art style and an actual narrative. Of course, this is me judging it on no other basis than your video of it. It could be another "I like the concept, but not the execution" issue.

another idea for future reference for spooky noises, its called preverb. Take a sound, reverse it, reverb it, than revers it again. Get reverberations of things before they happen. spooky and otherworldly sounding.
