I lived in Doha for three years. Qatar got a lot of bad press about treatment of migrant labor during its infrastructure development for the world cup. While I was there, local pepole were putting pressure on government to ban single men from malls on the weekends. Hanging out in malls is one of the things they enjoy, meeting people from home and relaxing on their time off. The ministry responible issued a statement reminding people that most of the expat workers were single men and that they made a valueable contribution to Qatar, giving up their time with their own families to work abroad. They said that these men had the same right to enjoy their weekend as anyone else and so the request to ban them from shopping malls would not be approved.
