Consider flying to Nelson if you don't have great sea-legs, or buy a flexible ferry ticket so you can cherry-pick your crossing. FYI - the Cook Strait is one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the world (due to its tidal anomalies) - in 1968 the interisland Ferry Wahine sunk close to the entrance of Wellington Harbour, with a loss of over 50 lives. Of course things have improved since then - crossings are cancelled if required 😍.

Love that you're enjoying the fab kiwi tucker. A heads-up if you have more time in Wellington is to head up to the spectacular Taraura Forest Park (approx. 90 km north of Wellington). Smart move staying in Picton - the crossing can be rough and a car journey afterwards unwelcome. Beware milkshakes, lol!!!

Hope you loved Wellington, spoilt for all kinds of culture choice. Thanks for getting a cabin on the ferry, been on the ferry a few times, but not seen the cabin.
