Hello! There are many buildings from before the First World War in Budapest. At that time, many tenements were built in a similar style. The difference is that back then they had straight sides. This type of building is called a gang house. Gang word comes from the German word gang for corridor. The functions have not changed, there are still apartments in them today. They were characterized by multiple functions. The lowest level was mostly shops. The owner lived on the first floor. If there were several apartments, these were the most expensive apartments. The upper levels housed various city and company officials. If the owner did not live there, workers lived in the entire building. Such apartments consisted of a room and a kitchen. A family lived here (husband, wife, 6-8 children...) The spiral staircase was never used by the owners, it always belonged to the staff. Today, several such buildings have been renovated and rebuilt according to modern expectations. The external facade was left in order to preserve the streetscape.
