@@enriquemunoz704 1) there are lots of innocent people in prison 2) US puts people in prison for "crimes" which really shouldn't be crimes, or which should be punished by house arrest/community service/fines. 3) poor nutrition exacerbates mental illness and can cause or exacerbate physical illness, which cause more expense in the prison and makes it harder for a prisoner to be rehabilitated. Since most prisoners will be released, rehabilitation and a successful transfer to non-prison life should be the goal. 4) US has a constitutional right against cruel and unusual punishment, which serving food which had been marked "not fit for human consumption", or serving food full of maggots, I think most people would consider cruel and unusual punishment.

God bless you. I didn’t know what you did but I hope you’re doing great right now and not too disenfranchised. Prison is not like university or college, it’s not a place to achieve a higher milestone or to get a better life, it’s a place of punishment and sheer retribution in some cases and it’s a one way ticket to exclusion and lifelong disbarment of basic rights. While it is true that inmates lose a lot of rights when incarcerated and only have half of those rights restored if paroled, some people are wrongfully pressured or even convicted of crimes. Again, I didn’t know what you did but it doesn’t matter, I hope you’re doing well and having a good life. I’m sick of the fed govt and state and local level politicians treating our inmates like how the red armband-wearing folks did, I wish our country’s prisons are more like Norway.

I was in jail for 10 days. The best meal by far was breakfast. The problem was that the fluorescent lighting was turned off at 3 am and breakfast was served between 4 and 5 am and nobody woke me up so I couldn't get to it. Get real, hospital food is DEFINITELY not like this and not comparable to prison; so it's better you don't overexaggerate. Most patients like you are either picky or because you were dialysis, your options were very limited, of which you should already know. But I wouldn't go so far as to say prison food is the same as hospital. I've worked in several hospitals and the food are all edible and taste pretty decent. Most of you just complain and won't eat anything.

Any homeless person with an ounce of tact can eat ten times better than any inmate. Dumpster diving, begging, foraging, scavenging, any of these methods can provide superior cuisine than any incarcerated person. However, it's true that a lot of school children in the US are fead by the state for about the same amount as the incarcerated, in theory at least, however that's just more a reason to harass your local political representative, not those unfortunate to be incarcerated. You need to punch up, not down.

I did 3 years in a New Mexico state prison, and the food was nothing like this. It was actually really good. I was honestly shocked and pleasantly surprised. The inmates who worked in the kitchen took some pride in serving up the best food they could make. On the weekends fried eggs made fresh, or breakfast burritos that were good enough I would pay for one on the outside lol. You still got a lot of carbs, but nothing like what is being shown here. Where I was at you could also buy protein powder if you were lucky enough to afford it and it wasn't bad either. Alot of guys got it for working out, but it would also supplement any lack of protein that may have been lacking in the state meals. I know not every prison is the same, but they all aren't like this and this is usually what I see whenever anyone talks about prison food.

The American police are extremely motivated by getting arrests to close cases. They don’t care if the suspect is guilty or innocent they just need a body to arrest to lower the clearance rate. Of those arrests many of those people are either too poor to afford a good lawyer or not mentally apt enough to understand the situation they are in. Many are sent to jail without even getting a fair trial or rot in prison because they can’t pay bail while awaiting their trail. Even if the extreme case that less than 1 percent of people in jail or innocent (it’s much higher than that) the U.S. has more than 2 million people in jail right now so that’s 20,000 people in jail that are innocent.

We have the highest incarceration rates on the Planet per 100,000 population. @@Vahlee-A The 'mental healthcare' thing is bunk. I lived in a crime ridden neighborhood for years. The nepo welfare hustle from one generation to the next causes boredom which turns to side hustles and substance abuse. I've seen it happen more times than I can count. The people who suffer the most are the people in poorer neighborhoods who are held under siege by criminals. Those criminals should face the consequences. Making money from crime? It costs tax payer billions in taxes or losses. Most crimes go unreported, especially vehicle break ins. Stealing batteries from cars is a two bit hustle that'll get you $7 for the lead inside. From the two but hustlers and thieves to the gangs it causes a big impact. They pass it on to the next generation. The problem is not mental healthcare, the problem is people who cause problems for the next generation. I don't buy the race arguments either, that's another crutch, an excuse.

Well what about jail? That's where people awaiting trial go, a great number of whom are innocent. In fact they are presumed innocent by the rule of law. Do they deserve to be forced to eat inedible slop? Bail isn't an option for a lot of people. Few Americans have more than a $100 dollars in savings and Bail bonds are issued with insane interest rates. Should a motorist who is wrongfully pulled over and arrested suffer for 2 weeks because they can't afford Bail. Why not treat them as a human being.

@@guitarcatlind6075 I just think prisons shouldn't be places of pointless suffering. Well we agree that 5% of prisoners are entirely innocent. If 1 in 20 prisoners are falsely imprisoned that alone would be enough to justify making prisons more humane because we can agree it is wrong to torture innocent people. Of the 95% that are guilty how many have committed a crime which you would actually consider causing them personal suffering for? According to the Bureau of Prisons 45% of prisoners are incarcerated for drug related offences. Should someone guilty of possesion of an ounce of a herb legal in some states be tormented in another? In a lot of cases these people need therapy and rehabilitation, and in fact if they are from a rich enough background they can avoid prison by showing a judge they are rich enough to buy these therapies. So in practice only poor drug offenders ever end up in prison. Does that mean we are tormenting people because they are poor?
