@@brucecampbell4528 Poor diets cause to people to be violent etc. Stopping crime happening is a lot more complicated than simply imprisoning them in terrible conditions after the crime, it's important to look at ways to prevent crime from happening in the first place or lowering re-offending rates. It's proven fact that poorer diets are more present in criminals than non-criminals and it's a proven fact poor diets cause people to act out. They did a study where they modified some prisoners' diets to a more nutritional one. There was an 80% reduction in behavioral problems. Sugar is apparently one of the worst causes.

It's not only private prisons. The sheriff in my county bragged during his election about how little he spent on each inmate. Half or more of most meals is bread and plain cake/bread. 4 ounces of plain oatmeal, 2 slices of white bread and a piece of plain cake/bread is a common breakfast. Your stomach growls after you eat.

Netflix has a great series where the British host travels to many prisons around the world. There's definitely a correlation between the rate of re-offenders and how prisoners are treated. The countries that take rehabilitation seriously and truly do prepare each prisoner to be ready to return to society and be productive and successful, like those in Finland, Norway, Iceland, have to lowest recidivism rates. Half of all Americans would lose their minds if US prisons began introducing prisons based on Finland's model because we've become accustomed to prison being all about the punishment aspect instead of giving equal measures towards rehabilitation. The privatization of state prisons is a huge reason why. The federal government runs Federal prisons and there is a noted difference between federal and state prisons with federal often being called Club Fed. The recidivism rate for federal prisons is also much lower than state prisons. Maybe, it will take a law firm to decide to back a class action for prisoners who can contribute their current health problems to poor nutrition in prisons or something similar?? Money/Profit seems to be the only thing they care about and gets their attention.

@@sherylhyatt3065 Most people want to live a productive life, and people WANT the opportunity to be successful and contribute to society. Why would we not want to provide true rehabilitative programs to prisoners when thousands of prisoners are released each day in the US? Why wouldn't we support giving the best foundation to not re-offend instead of out and having to resort to committing crimes because they've never had the tools to build a foundation to be successful. Don't you want the person next to in line at the grocery store or eating near you in a restaurant to be on their way to a productive, successful life or a non-rehabilitated former prisoner? If you don't agree with the humanity side of prison reform, you should be able to agree with how it affects you personally. If you are walking in a mall or a Walmart for 5 min, every 5th person who pass has been incarcerated at some point.

My Cousin served in the Airforce for 6yrs and was currently on active duty when he had a PTSD breakdown. He fired off his gun into the floor while he was home alone and there was no other houses around his home. He called police for help and instead he was arrested, sentenced to prison for a year by the BOP and when I was finally able to visit him, he was so skinny, so malnourished and looked like death. This guy was always very fit, super healthy and extremely kind!... The whole family sent him a ton of money over that year, just so he could buy food from the commissary/canteen store to eat and stay healthy but so he could also call home and speak to his loved ones and feel human again. He had a job in prison but it only paid $17 dollars a month for 8hrs of labor per day, 5-6 days a week. The second time I went back to see him, he looked so much better, he had food, he had an actual toothbrush that was normal sized and not only 3inches long, real toothpaste, deodorant, bar soap, lotion, vitamins, lip balm, shampoo & conditioner, etc. He was so dehumanized while in there and was treated very poorly, even though he served his country and was mentally broken by it. The "Punishment DOES have to stop at some point in time and feeding humans "garbage" is committing a crime itself!... My Cousin got all the help he needed from the VA upon his release and is doing GREAT! The family has surrounded him with so much love, light & support. We had NO idea what he was going through and we had NO idea just how HORRIBLE the Prison System can be on a first time offender, a serviceman with no criminal record and was only going to inflict harm to himself from a mental breakdown, but when you are a person of color, the courts judgments in America, seem to be far worse than the crime itself. He would have died in there but his family's love & support was so much stronger!....

@@migdon470 The issue is that it's the PRIVATIZATION of prisons. Federal prisons are run by the government and don't have these issues. State prisons are run for profit by companies and since there's no real nutritional requirements for the food, they spend as little as possible. There is a MARKED difference in the re-offender/recidivism rate,too. Federal prisons have a much, much lower rate. Private companies running state prison have zero incentive to have any type of rehabilitation. It costs more AND it would slow down the revolving door of prisoners returning. It would be bad for business. As long as these companies can stuff the pockets of certain Congress members with Dark Money via tbe Citizens United ruling, it's never going to change. I would have liked for the video to include this so people can see that there's a better way to operate prisons-- Stop privatizing them.

Thank you so much for putting a spotlight on this issue. A lot of people are in bad shape health-wise when they arrive on the first day. Nutrition is important for people to get their lives together. This is because we have PRIVATIZED prisons, and all they care about is keeping people coming through the door. There is literally no incentive for them to help, in any way, with rehabilitation. Congress needs to pass legislation that requires prisons to at least follow the nutritional guidelines public high schools must do. There should be some standard, minimum amount that prisons must spend on food (not labor) for each prisoner daily. Privatized prisons should be required to have and pass unannounced health inspections like every restaurant has.

I think privatization is a horrible idea. I really wish the nation hadn't gone that route. Private companies lack the self-regulation to ensure that those we send to jail or prison are treated as is their constitutional rights afford them. That being said, ............... if you don't like prison food, stay out of prison. I don't believe pampering works. It doesn't seem to 'deter' so MHO is just the basics and no more. You want a better life, get out of prison and stay out of prison. They should have a bland but nutritious diet and water. My knowledge on the US prison system is basic, but ive heard that we have the worst prison system in the developed world. For every 100,000 people, I think about 655 are incarcerated, and because the prison system (especially private ones) focus on profits and punishment rather than rehabilitation and reintegration into society, the percentage of reincarnation is higher than most other Developed countries. Its an issue that is very complex and hard to fix, and becuase the federal government is run by a bunch of braindead boomers and corporations, nothing is gonna change

THANK YOU FOR BRINGING ATTENTION TO THIS! My fiance was in Worcester Country Jail in Worcester, MA for 2 and a half years. I was horrified when he told me about a) the quality of the "food" b) the amount of the "food" and most importantly c) the "food" being literally marked "NOT FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION" on the packaging, the "meat" not even being able to be identified, getting rotten or old "food". Thank god I was in a position to put money onto his books so he could get commissary because without the commissary to supplement.. he probably would have died. It took a few months for his stomach and GI track to get back to normal. This needs such a huge overhaul.

The amount of people horrified by this in the chat is crazy. Frankly I think there is a wider issue these people ignore. Access to fresh and healthy food is actually a luxury for ALL citizens. Not just those in prisons. I spent a few years in a food desert - poor restaurant choices (primarily dominated by processed - fast and fatty foods, markets that were either extremely overpriced or non-existent and economic inequality that kept this working class/low income neighborhood in this endless cycle by making healthy food unobtainable and a complete lack of interest for markets and healthier chains/restaurants to break ground. While I care about the plight of the incarcerated, there are whole generations of hardworking innocent people who grow up with health issues, poor nutrition, high obesity rates and diabetes - the same as these prisoners. We need to change food in America. Not just for these prisoners, but for all.

I'd imagine it's not much different than the cheap food in schools and hospitals. Processed sugars, fats, wheat, frozen vegetables. In fact probably similar to what we put in our pantries and freezers. The conditions themselves are probably more a result of how well the kitchen is managed. I'm looking at the images of the gross food but if you break it down fast food just looks prettier.

My poor high school in Baltimore used the same food supplier as the city jail. I got trays with moldy fries, expired milk, rancid smelling mystery meats and cheeses etc. After choking it down then puking a few times, I just stopped eating from the cafeteria. I'd rather get vending machine snacks or just go hungry. It was like that food was meant to grease the school-to-prison pipeline.

Everyone who leaves prison from health issues all comes directly from eating too much commissary. The limited amount of food given to inmates by the prison isn't enough to cause high cholesterol or high blood pressure or anything else for that matter. They use a " Healthy heart" diet to feed inmates. I've spent 13 years behind bars. Nobody can deny what I'm saying. Inmates may dislike the food quality or amounts given, but they can't deny that it's not healthy 95% of the time.

This is *completely* unacceptable! While Federal prisons may be better and state and rural(still state) prisons are worse (which I believe)---the fact remains, the decision was made to privatize prisons, creating entirely new revenue streams for land barrons across the country with little to NO regulations/limits in the most important places. I WILL call my legislators but I have so little faith in it making any difference in this mess of unbridled, corporate capitalism that ACTUAL citizens take a back seat to as ,Citizens United said, "corporations are people" (with ridiculously HUGE pockets). Federal prisons aren't privatized like state prisons and there's a huge difference in how they operate. Federal prisons are known as "Club Fed". Federal prisoners are treated more humanely AND the re-offender/recidivism rate is MARKEDLY lower than privatized state prisons. Private companies have zero interest in rehabilitation b/c it costs a bit more AND it might slow down the revolving door of prisoners returning. Federal law requires prisoners to be treated humanely. The problem is, they didn't define "humanely" in-depth enough. In addition to food problems, we also have prisoners dying from heat strokes because prisons aren't required to have A/C. When it's 90+F outside, imagine what it's like in a windowless, fanless concrete enclosure. People would get tickets for leaving a pet locked up in the same conditions, and while we think we should take that pet away from an owner who does that, we're okay with making people live in those conditions. Cells get upwards of 120F. Again, that is ONLY in privatized state prisons. It's going to do like everything else, it's going to stay that way as long as companies can stuff the pockets of enough Congress members, a Bill won't pass. We need the supreme court to overturn the Citizens United ruling and get dark money out of politics. McConnell has ensured the SCOTUS will have enough judges to keep citizens united going as is for the next 30 years or more. Four of the last five justices basically had their nominations funded through McConnell by Leo Leonard using the citizens united ruling.

Prisons DONT “rehabilitate” ANYONE! They’re more like a college for criminals. They learn more ways to commit crimes & more ways to avoid being caught. Prisons should b growing & raising their own food. 1 prison raises cattle while another grows grains & the next grows vegetable. Planting fruit bearing trees.... Prisoners will learn valuable live skills in how to grow, harvest seeds for future crops, preserve, & cook nutritional meals. Skill sets that can b taken back to their families & communities. We have tons of data/ stats on how gardening & raising livestock is beneficial both physically & mentally. Any extra food can b taken to food banks (after they have 2-3 yrs of food preserved) The entire country, world, should b at least someone their food needs, every year that passes food will become more scares & cost will continue to rise

They say a nutritionalist is in charge of the menu if you try to complain. It was hard to get a cereal that's not marketed to kids in the morning. Pudding replaced a lot of side dishes. Main course was usually something with bologna. They just say that to pass off responsibility to one person or document that can be questioned or criticized. I was so hungry in county jail at night I used to fight the idea of eating my toothpaste. They give each person one roll of TP a week. They don't give you any soap to wash your hands throughout the day. No nail clippers. I took ivermectin after I got out and I had pinworms. People probably come out with diabetes because they only feed you enough to keep you alive. If people put money on your books the only food you can really buy is ramen and they're over $1 for one noodle. They make good money marking those noodles up and if you don't like being hungry that's what you're going to be eating aside from those trays.
