I stumbled into your channel a week or so ago while looking for content on Street Photography but for small town and suburbs and now subscribed. The people I have seen so far in your videos have been great and so inspiring. I know this seems to be a young person's game for the most part, but at 61, almost 62, I have gotten the Street bug and starting to learn from videos like yours and others so I can jump out and start my adventure. Thank you so much for all you do to support these artist and allow us to see into some of their techniques and philosophies with regards to photography and really, life. Keep up the great work. Oh, Joe was just a great person to watch. He's very confident, but still doesn't seem to take himself too seriously... More please!

I am on the other end of the age spectrum just starting out at 16, its never too early or too late to start man. With your age comes life experience that can help give photos more meaning. I don't have that but I rather have lots of energy to always go out. We all have our differences and its what makes photography so diverse, unique and beautiful. Wishing you the best of luck with your street photography journey!

great stuff and nice to see Joe so open about the process - appreciated. I'm in LA and street photog here is limited. Downtown LA used to be good pre covid - but even then it went to sleep in the evening. But now? Over-run by transients and so many of the regular people are gone. Not a good scene to try and walk about taking pics. Still good spots are Venice Beach, and the Santa Monica boardwalk. But nothing like NYC or Chicago. A film I recommend is Kentmere 400 - made by Ilford - and super cheap compared to TriX or even HP5. About $5.25/36exp. Has that old school film look w nice visible grain, a little halation for back lit glow and easily pushed.

5:40 - People wanting to be photographed is such an amazing thing and NYC is the epicenter of that sentiment. I can't imagine having shadowed Bill Cunningham on his walks. In Tokyo, there are SO MANY opportunities for similar photography, but often times there's an aversion to it from the people being photographed. It's all so interesting, but we keep on keepin' on with it. Please visit when you can!

I'm trying to figure out how film shooting is better than digital for streetshooting as film is not cheap to buy and to develop/scan. An M10p and a Q2m would be ideal, I would think - wouldn't Joe get better pics? What am I missing here? Don't get me wrong, I love film and have multiple film cameras.

It’s an interesting approach. I wonder if intent is different for todays photographers versus photographers from the 70s, 80s. Where today the story is more about the photographer, and 30-40 years ago, the story was about the photograph.
@D.Trider
@D.Trider 2 жыл бұрын
To further clarify- I don’t think the latter is less important- I just wonder how perhaps ‘intent’ translates through to the quality of the images, purpose, narrative, storytelling etc. I think these interviews /walk arounds are great but it seems we all as artists are required more and more to personify our “brand” in order to stand out from the very crowded space of visual artists.

I shoot digital ( Fuji xe 2 and 18mm and 35mm lens. And I have to watch them again sometimes because I watch them and I pick up something. What I mean by different is that the all have thier own process and journey and I pick up something that I didn't know before. . Choice? I wouldn’t want to waste a frame either-especially on film. You/we are the photographer, not them. Eventually, you will want to deny taking someone’s picture at their request. I always wonder, how do you go about taking these photos? Like some of them look so candid and real life that it feels like you just took them without the person knowing. But then how does it go after you've snapped the pic? Do you stop and talk to them and ask to use the picture, do you say nothing, have you had any scary/nightmare experiences where someone haas just lost their 💩 at you?

I'm always confused about one thing.. is it not "illegal" to photograph people without their consent ? I know you said most people actually enjoy or want to get photographed but I'm pretty sure some people also don't entirely realize that they've been photographed which explains the confused reaction of some of them. Not sure I'd have balls to just shove my camera in some stranger's face and then quickly run away like nothing happened, some shots are really nice though.

Maybe people are fed up with constant videos of the so-called street photographers who run around the streets like a 5-year-old with a camera and end up with 99.999% garbage shots, but people think they're the best thing yet. I love the walkies videos, but some of the photographers wouldn't be someone that I'd be interested because of the bland photos. Mellissa O'Shaunessy has been the only one that I thought was truly honest and true to herself. Horses for courses as they say, or the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same stuff, music, photos, books or hobbies.
