Not much to do in those villages so drinking gives them a little fun I suppose. Regardless, they seem like very friendly and hospitable people. I would feel incredibly uncomfortable doing what you did though. The language and cultural differences are just night and day.

Great people, but to be honest this was one of the few times I felt uncomfortable. I had no idea what was in that drink and I felt different straight away. Luckily it was only a light high.
