Despite the Q1's very undressed appearance the sheer simplicity in wheel configuration for a tender engine really gives it that WorkHorse feel. It wasnt made to pull them fancy trips from city to city, this one got the work done as it shouldve, quite frankly however I prefer the more industrial side to the railways so the Q1 is really a beauty in my eyes. Excellent running session as always. Cheers.

I recall "Sir Ralph Wedgewood" used to run through Welwyn Garden City where we lived throughout the War. Yet you say it was destroyed? My memory must be 'going' then! But I do remember travelling up to Kings Cross with my Father and sharing a compartment with Sir Nigel Gresley - from Welwyn Garden City to Kings Cross. When I told him 'Your engine is dirty!' he sent me a works photo of it - we were behind his name-sake, of course. That was in 1940 - I still have the Works Photo from him.

I'm not a rivet counter but in mix freight-passenger trains, the coaches are coupled behind the freight cars, separated by a flat car or a tare box car. The reason for this combination is that passenger trains are heavier and putting them at the back would help tighten the couplers, secondly if the freights catches fire (yours is full of tank cars so...) the separator car will protect the passengers.

Engine cabs had blinds which covered the windows and doorways for night running, to hide the glare from the firebox. German bombers often followed main lines to cities on night raids. German aircraft did shoot up railways here, but as the war drew on, RAF air cover got better and better, as did anti aircraft guns, and large railway installations would have had barrage balloons, keeping enemy aircraft higher. Stations in London and elsewhere were bombed - but the trains kept running. The 'Shire' guide, 'Railways In War Time' is a fascinating little book.

I notice this is all standard track and is not combined with a roadbed such as Bachmanns's E-Z Track (nightmare) and Kato's Unitrak. Is it secured to the floor or is it just sitting there? Most of the time I try to use standard sections, it's very annoying and barely works.

I thought you would concentrate on locos that served with the armed forces or are particularly associated with the wars, like the Q1. For WWI I would have gone with the NBR class J36 “Maude” (available from Hornby) which was a loco sent to France in WWI and later named after a general, maybe the GWR Dean Goods 0-6-0 (Mainline version available second hand on eBay), some of which were sent to France and the Great Central/ROD 2-8-0 (available from Bachman) which became the LNER class O4, quite a few of which were built for the Government for war service, and some of which were bought by the GWR and LNER after the war. For WWII, while I approve of the O1 and the Stanier 8F, I would also have included the WD Austerity 2-8-0 (available from Bachman), and the 0-6-0ST Hunslet Austerity (after the war the LNER J94). These were all also used by the War Department.

Sam'sTrains I just bought the Duke of Gloucester 71000 train set. It's my first. I always wanted but never got, an electric train set. I did however have a tiny train that had no power except for pulling it along by hand and I remember how smooth and beautifully built it was. I should have done this years ago! At first I thought it's silly at my age (past my 50s) but older guys than me enjoy them. I love the first black one you showed that looked weathered. More realistic imho. My train hasn't arrived yet ( realistic eh? lol) and I'm as excited as a little boy again. 😀 There's a great video on you tube of the footplate of the Duke of Gloucester and the driver gives a running commentary as he operates the train's controls. The whistle sounds fantastic! All the best.

I like how agile the b12 looks with the short freight train.

It got the name b12 from LNER but before that under GER it was known as class S69 or the 1500 class originally designed to haul express passenger trains but during the end of ww2 they were used to haul US ambulance coaches

Hi mate, yeah generally they're fine - though it depends on the controller! Modern Hornby controllers, yes fine! Old controllers, I personally wouldn't - it's risky - and that includes the Hornby one with the red knob! Which controller will you be using?? :) All the best, Sam :)

Maybe the HM2000 or the cheap analogue controller cause that does the job
