Death Grips’ Exmilitary is one of the most fascinating debut projects in music history. It employs instantly recognizable samples to make connections with the audience based on nostalgic trigger-sounds while also refusing to adhere to a straightforward trajectory in the tradition of those sample sources. It contends with a world that is, paradoxically, both increasingly interconnected and atomized. It rails angrily against an oppressive world while also critiquing the apathy with which so many readily accept such a world. It is a fiery political and social statement that stands just as strongly in autumn 2020 as it did in spring 2011. While today’s world is certainly quite different from the world the band was writing about nearly a decade ago, it’s not so different that the lyrics and overall message don’t hit extremely hard.
