Immigration and Citizenship Minister Andrew Giles says there were nearly one million Visa applications to be processed, these were the left over from the Liberal government.
“The result of a decade of cruelty and a decade of neglect,” said Mr Giles.
“These backlogs were choking our immigration system, choking our economy too,”.

We don't want them, we are poor enough, can't have more wage stagnation.

Our only hope is to push back hard against this madness. If we don't we are done.

There are 100,000 asylum seekers that came by plane playing the system and government is not able to deport rejected ones. Most of them are from SE Asia, claim asylum and get working rights in oz plus medicare.

How is clearing the backlog going to help with addressing depressed infrastructure in sydney / melb? The rental crisis? Net 0? How will it improve wages in light of inflationary pressures? Unfortunately, immigration policy was not discussed before the election because both parties seem to have a gentleman's agreement to be consistent on this one issue. Polls suggest that ~2/3 Australian's do not support such an expansive immigration program, yet we get it regardless of who we vote for. "Democracy"

Good. We must close offshore detention next. The Morrison ministers should be charged over cruelty to refugees.

In Singapore, a domestic worker receives $350 per month. They also live with their employer and are called on at all hours. They also are lucky. They get one day off a month. When will Australia open up visas for these workers? Would do a lot to assist elderly home care. In Singapore, almost every home has one. C'mon, Australia, let's get some real workers in.
