I just loved the fact that Ace's solo album was a huge hit. But that's what happens when your other band mates 'control freaks' choke a key core member of Kiss. Gene & Paul's biggest mistakes was constantly choosing their own songs for final cut on Kiss songs. Ace often lifts up other classic rock songs. His version of Do Ya by ELO is amazing. The way Paul just ignores Ace's solo album to me says it all.

I'm just being pedantic here, don't mind me - ELO was a spinoff band of The Move, who recorded Do Ya before re-recording it as ELO. Do Ya is actually a Move cover, Ace was a Move fan. Check em out!! 👍🏻

I am now 62 years old. We used to do Kiss concerts in abandoned buildings. I was Gene because I could blow flames using a butane lighter. It may sound lame but they would go about 6 feet high. We saw Kiss in Sudbury Ontario about this time. Cheap Trick opened for them. This was around the time of Cheap Trick's first album. No bubblegum rock back then. Pretty damn good show.

Really. I just looked up the Love Gun tour dates to see when the Sudbury date was. Is that you’re home town? I would have been too young but I can only imagine what the concert would have like. Man I would have loved it, was a huge Cheap trick fan too. Glad to hear you thought it was a good show. What was the attendance like? For some reason it’s not listed. Cheers.

@@stevejohnston8543 I'm from North Bay. One of our fathers drove us to Sudbury. We waited at the doors hours before they opened as it was general admission. We stood in front of Ace. There were about 5,000 people in attendance. It was at Sudbury arena where they shoot "Shoresy".

@@MickLoud999 Funny I’m not sure I knew Kiss was coming at the time. I remember really wishing someone would take me to see Cheap Trick, I loved them. Thanks, figured the Elgin street barn would have been packed. I know the building only too well. Been watching hockey there for around forty years. There’s a game tonight 👍🏒 My first concert was Triumph, April Wine. Then Sabbath, Maiden and Metallica to name the notable shows. I could laugh, thé Metallica show wasn’t even that well attended. Only us metal heads were over the moon. Love to go back and look at the tour dates and think, man that was awhile ago. Time for is relative though, 10 even twenty years for me just doesn’t seem that removed for me. In the grand scheme of things it is but a speck of time. Anyway I’ve been jamming Kiss songs. I have this grin on my face the whole time while cranking my Marshall and playing my starburst (like the spaceman). Really don’t find any of them hard to play at all and I found Ace’s style fun to imitate, like his bending technique and vibrato. He may not have been technical but he had his own style for sure. As far as the songs, I think they’re undeniably good, catchy rock numbers that are so much fun to play. Its like what’s next and just play along without the more lengthy process of learning more complex stuff. 70’s Kiss was cool but they kind of lost me after that. Didn’t care for them in the eighties at all, it was more hard edged rock for me by then. Anyway it’s nice to look back with nostalgia to a time when all was right with them and keep that immortalized in my mind.

@@stevejohnston8543 Yeah we used to spend are fair bit of time in Sudbury. My grandmother lived there and my grandfather died in a mining accident in the 60s. I also had cousins and friends of the family but we drifted apart these years. My friend had a band in Toronto and put an ad looking for people with a "Northern Ontario" mentality. A couple of brothers from an Italian community used to be called Gatcho (probably spelled that wrong). I think it's out near Copper Cliff. They actually joined his band though. When we saw Kiss Cheap Trick was unknown to us. We all bought their first album though. That was, in my estimation their best. It was RAW!! Songs about pedos and serial killers!! It's funny that I watched a documentary about Sudbury last night. It was about the mining industry. I didn't know Thomas Edison tried to mine nickel there. Pretty interesting stuff.

Nailed it. Having grown up in the 60's and 70's, I can attest 1978 was the year KISS started rebranding themselves. There was a huge social divide between what kids liked and what their older brother or sister would like when it came to music. KISS was always that band that fought for legitimacy because of their outfits. What helped early was it gave them a very edgy look. The musical breakthrough gave them cred for a short period of time. But as soon as they hugged the commercial side of their image that catered to toys, dolls, and superhero like images, they were completely exposed and their expiration date was sealed. No one in the industry took them serious again. And like most bands that live in a bubble of people telling them what they want to hear, they were the last ones to figure that out. That's why they continued to make more and more bad choices.

Looking back to ‘78 from ‘22 with decades of reflection and revisions on history there is one clear, and important, key missing ingredient and that is the, in the moment experience of what it was like as a fan. We didn’t have access to KZbin or anything besides a teen/music magazine or the occasional newspaper article and the mystique of the band meant we took the image and the music to super heights.

Amazing how you're asking the same questions I asked roughly 45 years ago when I watched "KISS Meets The Phantom Of The Park". Great detailed explanation of how KISS fell from grace during the 1980s. For me as a KISS fan since my teens, it was a walk down memory lane in some parts of your video.

Of all the Kiss related videos I've viewed on this Tube of You, I find that this one video of yours has managed to be the only one to hold my attention for more than an hour... this thing held me captive throughout the entire 2+ hours... I even went back to the part about Ace's solo album and to the BTS portion of "...Phantom of the Park". Great compilation of facts and opinions. Great voice and delivery. Color me entertained. From a Kiss fan from way back, I applaud you and I feverishly await part two and three.

In reference to Gene's solo album. I think When You Wish Upon A Star would've been perfect if the rest of the album would've been a solid rock, bare bones album. That song at the end would've taken a back the listener.

Been a KISS fan since 75.. This is very well put together. Ive listened to all 3 parts several times, and basically lived through the rise and fall of KISS. Both the rise and the fall fascinate me. I loved KISS until about 78-79. Dynasty confused me. Unmasked even further.. The Elder came...and then I was into Van Halen and Iron Maiden. lol. I also love the fact you talk about things honestly...not the Spins that Gene and Paul do...and not the vague memories of Ace, or the whining of Peter.. When I FIANALLY got to see my former heroes live..They had 'secretly' replaced Ace with Vinnie..I was LIVID, because I love Ace's style and his sound. At fist,I thought Vinnie MIGHT be a good fit..After all, I was into Eddie Van Halen's style and tone.. When they took off the makeup, I thought they looked silly. When I first heard 'Lick it Up' I thought it was generic and pedestrian.. I thought they were trying to sound like 'Loverboy'. (And I hated Loverboy). I stayed on the periphery, watching their career from afar.. In 1993, a colleague of mine won tickets to Meet and Greet KISS. 'Revenge ' had just come out. I got to meet G&P, with Bruce and Eric Singer....Gene bought us dinner..I had Chicken Parm..and Paul bitched about the food.. I sang 'Love on the Rocks' to Gene and he was impressed.... Anyway...I think this was a fantastic job you've done with this Magnum Opus.. Thanks for taking me back in time..

I think Peters album suffers from the same problem as The Elder in that they do not sound like Kiss at all. I like both those albums for at least daring to try something different, good or bad. And Peter always had the best voice by far anyway.

This is an awesome synthesis of all the books and literature featuring stories or entirely about the band KISS. I would not be surprised if you Rezi have a degree in History or something along those lines, or am a professional writer in some capacity because this is really really well done. Moreover, you are very consistent and proper in citing specific information, quotes and there is no fluff. This is perhaps the best "Rock History" content on the internet, especially considering how entertaining it is and most of the time all we see is the avatar host. However, as a pro would do, you feature enough visuals to utilize the medium and it substantial adds to the experience and storytelling instead of being irrelevant or cumulative.

Nice job. Very interesting and insightful doc. Gene Simmons' solo album is a masterpiece in the context of when it was recorded and released. I still listen to it regularly. One of my favorite KISS albums. I also liked The Elder so...a lot after really rediscovering and giving it several spins decades after it's infamous creation. Looking forward to continuing to listen to your very professional documentary. Thanks for the effort.

@@Mr.Timwell that's so cool KISS is your gateway band. I've seen a few KZbinrs around your age say the same thing. I was born in '71 but KISS wasn't a band to me when I was a kid they were more like superheroes. When Quiet Riot came out with Metal Health that's what opend the door for me but Motley Crue blew the hinges off! KISS was there always and I liked some stuff (I distinctly remember the creatures album cover) I really got back into KISS when REVENGE came out and was really looking forward to the next album then KISS UNPLUGGED happened and the rest is KISSTORY! Although I do like CARNIVAL OF SOULS more than most it seems. I saw KISS for the first time on the reunion tour in Orlando Florida then at the first farewell tour back to back nights Orlando and Tampa I put Peter's makeup on at Tampa! 🤘🤘
