I will say to be fair to Peeta in the beginning of Catching Fire- Katniss basically cut him off completely after the games. His main issue wasn't that Katniss wasn't his gf, what bothered him is how easily she ignored him after everything they went through. I think Peeta's kind heart just didn't have the strength to bottle that trauma like Katniss did, and when he needed someone to be there, someone who understood what he went through, she was emotionally unavailable. We know for all of Katniss' strengths, she is not the most socially adept, and she likely was unaware of what he needed from her, as well as what she needed from him. I don't think Katniss was even aware of how much Peeta's presence could help her process her own trauma until they were forced to be together for the tour.
@clover2739 Жыл бұрын
Plus we don’t know exactly why he was living alone but I imagine just how shut out peeta feels in general after winning those first games, I feel like it must feel like a twist in the gut seeing Katniss live with her family and being surrounded by support while he lives in that big victors village house by himself because his parents and two brothers weren’t willing to live with him. Especially after just being traumatised and book wise just losing a leg so he needs more help than normal. It’s never gone into much detail because we are in Katniss perspective but with how things are I imagine for peeta he’d probably feel distant to everyone. There’s a reason why he sees himself as so disposable and knows that no one needs him so it’s fine if he dies. I don’t think it’s just a simple thing of ‘she doesn’t love me!!’ We also know even in this distance peeta still brings the Everdeen family and Haymitch bread and frosted cookies and things
@skunkskiestink6620 Жыл бұрын
@@clover2739you perfectly summarized peetas pov. it breaks my heart thinking of him in that big empty house, his family isn’t around, katniss his only companion in this pushing him away because he’s a reminder of it all, having his body permanently disabled in the very games he said he didn’t want to change him, while still navigating that regardless of katniss pushing him and everyone away her existence (and more importantly to her; her families existence) relies heavily on having people be there for her and help her and he still shows up and basically sacrifices himself for haymitch. he’s one of my favorite characters i wish we got more insight on his perspective
@clover2739 Жыл бұрын
@@skunkskiestink6620 it’s why I also think Peeta’s reaction at the end of the first book is more than ‘Omg you don’t love me back??’ He seemed to know at the beginning that they were putting on a show for the cameras. His issue seemed to be more that it seemed like Katniss and Haymitch were leaving him out (which happens again multiple times which he’s shown to be upset over) but he asks more about how much of it was real. I think for someone like him it would’ve been shocking and nice to find out someone actually seems to care about his life so much, to do all that for him when he could’ve been left to die. But then he realises it’s for the camera so he wonder how much of it is really real, did she care about his life at all or was that an act. Even though deep down he knows she must, it must hurt with his family life and how much he feels unneeded that the only time it seemed like someone really cared for him was for the cameras and was fake. Maybe I’m looking too into it, but even from what peeta says at the end when he gets upset it does seem more than him being islet that the girl he likes doesn’t actually like him back.
@skunkskiestink6620 Жыл бұрын
@@clover2739 yes i agree i never felt like peeta was whiny about her not liking him or something. they went through something intense together and before their games katniss was so convinced he was plotting against her. he opened up to her and showed her he didn’t have some plan he was a scared child like her. he just didn’t want the games to change him for his last few days alive. they manage to do their whole act and make it out alive even tho he lost his leg and she goes right back to being cold and distant. i think obviously katniss isn’t his mom and her role isn’t to fulfill him but i do think peetas relationship and grips with katniss are connected to katniss and her mothers issues. katniss resents her mother for shutting down at their hardest point but it’s a coping mechanism she has also developed. i think that peeta holds up a mirror to katniss that she too disassociates and shuts down when she’s going through it and although that’s understandable, it does make it easier to push through and connect with the people who love you and are going through those same situations with you. peeta is there to show katniss that this coping mechanism isn’t healthy and she needs to learn to lean on others.

The movie really exaggerated this scene. In the book he just covered himself with mud & leaves not made himself look like a photo realistic slab of rock. The only real reason that worked was because the careers had probably gone far away from that area to heal from their tracker jacker stings (remember that Katniss had a crazy trip & was out for days & she only got stung like three times unlike the careers) & then were busy digging up those explosives inside the podiums so that the D3 tribute could make that boobytrap for the food (& all the other remaining tributes were probably hiding). Peeta was so lucky that Katniss found him first. Also any natural tan from being outside for so long was probably gone at that point since he was also loosing so much blood (from fighting Cato) that he was gonna die from blood poisoning as well as starvation.

But book wise he basically just camouflaged himself with mud and leaves and that. @@scorpioj3 It's actually interesting that you say he changed so much, because I think Suzanne Collins/the films do a really great job of foreshadowing Gale's "change" into the person he becomes. For example, that scene near the beginning of the first movie, where Gale says "You know how to hunt" and Katniss says "Yeah, animals! Not people" and Gale says "It's the same thing." It shows that Gale has always had a disregard for human life, that Gale doesn't actually view those different from him as people. Another example is when Gale is quite vocally resentful of Madge Undersee in the book, because Gale has fallen for the us vs. them mentality that the Capitol instills in people (which is what the actual Hunger Games serves as a metaphor for) -- and eventually leads Gale to bombing innocent children. In fact, it's interesting that Gale feels so tortured at the end that he "killed" Prim. We have to wonder: would he care if he didn't kill Katniss's sister, and he only killed some random other people that aren't close to him? I think Suzanne Collins did a really good job in crafting Gale's character arc!

people always joke about peeta and the cake decor/camo body paint but like it’s discussed in the books that peeta just has a natural talent/likes art period. i’m sure cake decorating was a way for him to practice and explore that in a practical way but his talent for painting is suppose to be bigger and deeper than just the cake decorating and i like that it’s like a little nugget of “this is peeta without the pressure of having to work at his parents bakery or fight in the arena he’s a talented artist” it reminds me of katniss’ singing how it’s not something she could or wants to pursue but it’s a characteristic of her from outside the games or even the pressures of her life back home. it feels kinda funny how 2 people with so much crazy stressful life changing shit happening to them but deep down they’re just kids who like to be like to do their random little hobbies and activities it just feels humanizing, relatable, etc

i vaguely remember mags kind of raising finnick because mags was finnick’s mentor and finnick was the youngest tribute to ever win. they were really close so she was kind of a maternal figure role kind of like a grandmother so the kiss isn’t totally weird if you think about it like that. she also pointed out the cameras after she volunteered for annie and finnick hugged her because she didn’t want the other tributes to see his weakness for her (mags). he was her grandbaby :(

37:55 wondering what the mutts are made of.... in the books the dogs are made to look like the tributes, with identical eyes to each dead tribute and district numbers on their collars. In the prequel you find out the avoxs (people forced into servitude with their tongues cut off as a punishment for rebellion) were used for some of the original capitol mutations. trulyyyyy horror worthy stuff

The more I look into the lore of the hunger games universe the more horrifying it gets. I’m surprised it’s categorized as just a teen dystopia and not a full on dystopian horror series.

7:00 I think the book (if I remember correctly) implies that usually it’s newer staff that’s placed for the “lower” districts. I think Effie made a remark to Katniss at one point saying something along the lines of “if you win I might get promoted to a better district next year”
@tylerbrown7246 Жыл бұрын
You have a running total of numbers of time your name goes in. It’s 1 when you’re 12, 2 (+1) for 13, 3(+3) for 14, 4(+6) for 15, 5(+10) for 16 etc. Gale put his name in an extra time each year for all of his siblings and mom so they all had an extra serving of bread, oil etc that helps them get through the year
@tayahoover9642 Жыл бұрын
aight as someone who has read the books countless times (comfort book) let me answer ur questions: 1. gale had so many entries bc it’s 1 extra entry each year per person, then you can add entries for per person for a year supply of grain so since gale has like 5 siblings then himself he gets 42 entries because he is 17 which is 6 entries that year. 2.Effie took district 12 bc it was the same district her mother had when her mother was an escort. 3. Cato couldn’t climb the tree because he was too heavy and the branches kept breaking (this is clarified in the books). 4. Flickerman is the host and that job runs in the family, he is very loyal to the capitol and does have control over what he says but knows to keep it in line with the capitol propaganda. 5. The reason the claw doesn’t immediately scoop rue up is bc they don’t send it down if there is a contestant nearby, in order to avoid injuring the contestant or having the contestant try to hijack it or whatever. 6. The reason petta chose that spot specifically is bc he needed to be by a water source since water was limited in the arena and since he couldn’t move easily he wanted to disguise himself where he wouldn’t have to move each time he needed water. 7. I think the Mags/Finnick kiss is due to like cultural norms for district 4. 8. The sigh is bc she knows petta will volunteer, however it could also be bc she knows if petta doesn’t volunteer he won’t know how to mentor (send gifts, get sponsors, etc.) like haymitch does. That and Haymitch wouldn’t do as well in the HG as petta would. 9. The rebellion was simmering before Katniss even came around, however once they had a face that other districts would rally around it kicked into full speed. The victory tour is 6 months after the HG then the next HG is a year later so as soon as the 74th ended and Crane ate it Heavensbee stepped up to create a games that district 13 could use for the rebellion. 10. Johanna won her games by implementing a fake persona, portraying herself as a "sniveling, cowardly fool" then turns out she was a badass with an axe and could climb trees. yupp just venmo me next time girlies.

@beks333 Жыл бұрын
this is the collab of the ages😭 also, I know they’re not gonna read the books, but it’s so funny how right they are about how many of their questions are answered in the books😭 a couple of thoughts: - there wasn’t much peeta/katniss romance at first cause katniss was genuinely just tryna survive. but at the same time, it was also very romance centric because of the whole “star-crossed lovers” narrative they were playing up - the peacekeepers could have actually not recognized the victors at first cause they don’t have tv’s (from what I remember). peacekeepers stay posted at bases in the districts they are sent to, so it’s not like they came from the capitol knowing full well who everyone was - I’m like 95% sure that they knew what order the sections of the clock were in because of the lighting at the tree signalling 12 o’clock. the lightning struck which signalled fog, then after the hour of fog, our main group went through the monkey section, and so on - I can’t remember if the mutt dogs were also created from absolutely nothing in the books, but there is a capitol lab! if everything from ABOSAS was carried on through the decades, then the monkeys were muttations created specifically for the games - snow chose those flowers cause his grandma’am grew them and was quite obsessed with them - snow and seneca really should’ve just left the “two winners from the same district” rule alone cause it would’ve just seemed like a cool lil thing they were doing for this year’s games
@darlingdannid Жыл бұрын
they could've said the two winners bit was pr to hype up the quarter quell. like "if you think 74 was something, wait til you see 75!"

katniss was lowkey hilarious in the first book with the romance because she’d be like “I literally hate kissing this guy” and then occasionally be like “damn actually I kinda like him” and just let it go immediately after, which makes sense because of the survival thing but still

Something interesting in the first movie is that in the training center, fox-face is identifying plants on that machine thing, implying that she actually had a good knowledge about what fruits or berries would be edible in the arena. This could mean that her death by poisoning via berry in the games was a suicide because she probably already knew the berry was poisonous because she literally trained for it.

4:11 Gale has a lot of brothers and a mom to feed. It's for all of them. That's why he has so many entries in the reaping. Imagine this being the same for other kids in 12. Some may even have more than Gale in the reaping just to eat. Which is why it doesn't make sense how Prim (1) and Peeta (5?) got called when their names are very unlikely to get picked.
@skunkskiestink6620 Жыл бұрын
with the way the 12 years olds just have their name in once but there seems to regularly be like one young kid every games i def think younger kids being picked are rigged for the drama. like katniss talks about how victors’ children get picked too often for it to be organic and she’s sure if she ever had kids they would be picked and i think it’s similar with prim or rues situation.
@barbara83200110 ай бұрын
The entries stack each year and if you take the tesserae for members of your family it also adds to that. Rue would have probably had tesserae for her parents and younger siblings to get extra food, so her name would have been in several times over the required entry.
@ritsi9968 Жыл бұрын
gale's name was in the reaping so many times because he has 3 siblings + his mother to take care of and putting his name in extra times means they get extra food which they obviously need. he doesnt volunteer when peeta's name is reaped because him and Katniss have an agreement that if one of them is reaped, the other must take care of the other's family including their own. peeta was able to conceal himself in the rocks using mud and plants (this was explained in the books but also shown in the movie) cato was unable to climb the tree to katniss because hes too big and also hes been trained as a fighter and killer from birth, escaping through climbing trees is probably something he never learnt. as for mags kissing finnick, she's unable to speak when shes dying and its her way of saying goodbye, its nothing more than that. besides, this could be customary in district 4, its common in many cultures and wouldnt be far-fetched to assume the same for district 4.

A few questions in this video answered for people who only watched the movie (no pressure to read the books) - the reason Gail has so many draws is cause he puts his name in for tesserac, a payment of grain and a bit of oil for your extra name in the reaping. -the stylists do get paid, and it's implied that the more famous they are the more they get paid, as long as they're doing what president snow wants (rip cinna) -they're not allowed to scoop bodies (rue's) when other tributes are around. Katniss actually has to cover rue's body before they scoop her so she can do the flower thing -you're right, there have never been 2 winners -peeta's special skill in training is camoflouge, and his section leader taught him how to blend in with anything using the resources around him. -he escaped the guy chasing him and then collapsed and covered himself with mud after that, unable to move -side note I love the thought that the quarter quell is just Rupaul All Stars season 7 -i was shook when i saw mags kiss finnick lmao, but no it's more of a family dynamic, mags was i think the mother of Finnick's dead girlfriend and after she died, Mags was Finnick's last "family" -there's no conspiracy theory behind why they picked haymitch. -the rebels have been planning for decades, and they just ran with Katniss as their figure head to rally the districts. They planned to get her out of the QQ since the victory tour. -plutart didn't come up with the idea for the quarter quell, President Snow did. When Plutart showed Katniss the movkingjay to show he was on her side, he admits he didn't know what the quarter quell was at that point -gorl Peeta and Gail are so DESPERATE in the movies god -the monkeys are Muttations too, genetically modified creatures like the jabberjays. Where they're kept is not expanded on lol -Johanna won her games because she acted like a crybaby useless idiot so people would overlook her or feel pity, but being raised in the lumber district she slayed hard with an axe, so she waited until there were almost no tributes left and then started showing her true colours -beedy INVENTED the wire and studied the wall, that's why he knows so much about it and the wall There ya have it! Lore!

Effie didn't care about Haymitch yet, it was a sigh of relief that he was called. Katniss, as debora13897 said, wanted to protect Peeta so she told Haymitch to volunteer if Peeta was called. If Peeta was called, Haymitch would have gone. Leaving Peeta as the only one who didn't want Haymitch to go. Peeta wanted to be able to protect Katniss in the arena while Haymitch uses his influence in the capitol to get Katniss sponsors. That is why Peeta volunteered.

6:58 i think Effie was placed there because she's loyal to the capitol, and since there's always tension in 12 they wouldn't have put a "difficult" employee there.
