I think Octavio really does deeply care for his people, I mean they don't seem mistreated at all. They get trampolines and fun stuff to play around with while guarding the zapfish, there are replicas of inkopolis turf stages for the octolings, and it seems like agent 8 has some semblance of loyalty to him even without her memories.

I think Nintendo couldn't decide whether they wanted Octavio to be a benevolent ruler acting in desperation for the sake of his people , or a vengeful tyrant trying to conquer Inkopolis. That's why he often had conflicting motives. However, I believe Nintendo has decided on the former during Splatoon 3's development. When we first encounter him in the crater, he's trying to find his missing troops, and believes that Cuttlefish is responsible. However at some point he found out that Mr.Grizz was manipulating Inklings into gathering salmon eggs and experimenting on the Octarians, and thus decided to help the player defeat him. I believe that the first 2 games need to be retconned or something to properly portray who Octavio is. It has lead to a lot of confusion in the fandom.

If you decipher Sunken Scroll 24 in Splatoon 2 from square script, it explains how the Octostomp was made, by cloning a tentacle from Octavio, putting it inside some machinery, and combining it with energy from a zapfish. However, this is a bit dubiously canon, as in that same deciphering, we see the name of Manabu Hiraoka, a developer who is part of the design/art team in both Splatoon and Splatoon 2.

The problem of having Mr Grizz be the main antagonist is that the games will want to keep having Salmon Run as a gameplay mode, so I think it is in their interest to leave Mr Grizz and the linked activity as grey as possible, while using some other things for story purposes.

I think its more that Grizz Co. is actively engaging in illegal operations but these operations are needed for society to run. The energy crisis is still a relevant topic in splatoon even amongst the inkling cities. Grizz co illegally modifies weapons and allows children into restricted zones the government would not want them to be in. Despite that, the golden eggs providing a much needed alternative energy source for inkling cities is a required service and really does make inkling society better as per Grizz Co.'s employee hook. In real life, there are companies that do exactly as Grizz Co do and, because the service is so needed or widely used, lawmakers provide legal exceptions or definitions that make these companies legal.

Spoilers for splatoon 3 It is explained in the alterna logs that a lot of the marine life was influenced by the buildup of human feelings from liquid crystals used to make the sky in alterna. It could be that the inklings and octolings were also influenced by humans' desires, and tartar might have not realized the irony in his statements about inkling society.

13:20 Noticed an odd thing about the English pronoun translations (at least within 7 hours of this video being premiered) which is easy to miss. For the behind the scenes sections, (eventhough the info is still the exact same for the three of them) while the Splatoon 2 player and the Grizzco employee still have she/her pronouns, SPECIFICALLY AGENT 4 features they/them pronouns! This isn’t the same for the Agent 3 who also still features she/they promouns like the Splatoon 1 Inkling. This means that either someone only thought about the pronouns for Agent 4 and not the others, or they are changing the pronouns but doing it one at a time, very slowly. Also, another small detail about this website is that the individul hyperlinks for the characters are all numbered, and after the first 4 (ordered Agent 3, Splatoon 1 Inkling, Agent 4, Splatoon 2 Player) they are in alphabetical order (with C.Q. Cumber before Callie). All alphabetical EXCEPT for the Grizzco Employee who is number 31 for some reason.

About 44:17 From the Octo Expansion itself, the character creation screen being a green vat where we literally create Agent 8, old enough to have a full humanoid form already upon creation INSTEAD of us seeing their baby Octo form then grow up into what we choose or something similar and UNLIKE when you simply choose your Inkling’s features without any implication of creating them from scratch (and both Agent 3 and 4 have the background stories of where they are from and their parents, unlike Agent 8 having nothing of the sort explained, only that they were a soldier and supposedly amnesiac of any memories prior to war) is already a HUGE implication that made me immediately assume Octolings were all clones unlike Inklings. Plus their whole species is about war and it gives me big Halo/Star Wars cloning soldiers vibes tbh but I digress. Add onto this that all the enemy Octolings look identical, and the only Octolings we see that are NOT identical to at least one other are the ones we see mingling in Inkling society which heavily encourages individualising their looks and identities. Also I haven’t found any cycle of life art for Octolings, only for the Inklings which shows us the stages of maturity. We never canonically see a baby Octoling or Octarian that I am aware of. You can make Agent 8 out of their own template with fewer choices than Inklings, and there is diversity in skin tone. This implies to me that perhaps there are several main “donors” of tentacles, or perhaps Octolings and Octarians are “bred” from those that have died or otherwise choose to donate tentacles if the original Octolings that cloned them passed long ago. Jellyfish canonically breed this way in Splatoon, and maybe the variations in Octolings could even be explained through mutations in the genes during the cloning process, either intentional in an effort to mix it up and make them stronger, or accidental at some point in the growth phase. Who knows! Octolings have similar instincts to Inklings in regards to individuality, it’s just their society discourages that due to war, propaganda, and lack of resources comparitive to what’s on the surface. So perhaps the variation during the cloning process is intentional. All signs point, in my opinion and interpretation of the materials we have, that Octolings AND other Octarians are both cloned species. There’s likely a difference in their cloning process that leads Octolings to be able to have a humanoid form for tactical advantage of diversity in combat is all.

Didn't even think about it, but Octopus in real life usually host independent nervous systems in their tentacles to increases dexterability and making it easier to move around. They will also continue moving a while after separation from the main body, in order to make escapes easier. This is probably what influenced Octarians being severed tentacles, as you can easily imagine an octopus tentacle being it's own individual.

Great video. I really liked the part about the card game about poems. Also, there is a little bit more about Marina's laptop. The writing below the screen on her laptop also translates to 'Octavio'. I don't know what that really means, but I thought it was interesting. I was not aware of that manga! I am amazed that it isn't better known. I managed to find the full fan translated version of it. It seems to have been drawn by Seita Inoue, art director of Splatoon and Splatoon 2. (I am very curious about what the official translation is like! and now with a recent interview style article with deep cut, we KNOW not all octolings lived underground since the turf war. shiver being in game with her past paints a completely different light to that claim and it's probably JUST octavio's troops that went into exile. Hence the need for propaganda to plan revenge. For clarification: the interview stated shiver frye and big man KNEW each other since childhood as they are members of the families who took charge in organizing the festivals in splatsville. They got close in middle school and later formed their band BUT they knew each other since their birth basically. This makes it impossible for shiver to have lived underground, otherwise they would have NOT known each other until spaltoon 2 octo expansion. this further cements anti inkling "info" in the sunken scrolls as mere propaganda but also reveals that not the entirety of octo-kind went underground. IN fact the great turf war seems to have been a VERY local war only. I suspect it called the "great" turf war as it may have been the ONLY large scale turf war EVER in inkling history. In comparison the "GREAT WAR" in human history is the name of the first world war that lasted 30 years ( less then the hundred year war) AND was global. I think it's safe to say that the great turf wars was the only "real" war in this cephalopod future. Further note to bring up is the character creation for agent 8. There is NO real Explanation WHY it happening in a VAT. I further suspect that agent 8 and and perhaps most underground octolings are engineered rather than born. (it would explain only female octolings as enemies)( I am aware of the octarians turning into octolings and octarians being hair cuts, but that does not leave out the engineering) It even shines further light on the "rising tides" reason for the war as outside the great turf war and one event outside of splatsville there are no further mentions of constant floods. Looking at the official map of splatoon, we see the great turf war regions being close to salmonid spawning grounds. A rising tide may have been involved but it was not a global issue or one that continues to plague the splatoon world outside of salmonids related stuff. One can easily claim that octavio's quest for revenge against inklings is entirely an ego thing and was rather small scale if not pathetically small compared to just japan's own "waring states" history.

Going off visuals, I think it's heavily implied that the tentacle octarians are cut/cloned from Octavio himself. Sunken Sea Scroll 24 in S2 shows an octoling with an X cut in a machine creating the octarian weapons/tentacles with the same X cut. Because of the way it is framed I don't think the cutting/cloning is anything beyond a military project to create as many bodies for an army as possible. I'm personally still gonna have the hypnotized octolings as headcannon (at least until its directly stated otherwise). it makes the story mode final boss feel a bit cooler, like were not just saving the zapfish, but the octolings as well. also it makes Octavio even more of a twisted villan. however I don't think the OCTARAINS (the Lil tentacle dudes) are mind controlled. to me it seems like they're solely loyal to octavio, either due to a simpler mind, a sense of loyalty to the one who's tentacle they came from, whatever.
