What is exhausting is that not liking her music or criticising her brand of feminism leads to people labellling other women as pick mes or other negative stereotypes and that just feels silencing

YES! I think Taylor has been targeted before for sexism and internalized sexism ... but now, there are more valid criticisms of her - private jet, creepy boyfriends and allies, capitalism, and white feminism. Not everyone should be clumped in with "internalized misogyny" if they critique her. Some of her fans do that, I suspect, because it's hard for them to accept their idol isn't perfect.

It is exhausting. I am not even sure how the Swifties have the mental gymnastics to spin everything to make Taylor sound like the victim. A couple of days ago, I saw a comment that compared Daryl Davis joining the KKK to befriend members and change their minds about black people to Taylor dating Matty Healy. This person brought up Darryl Davis and said Taylor was doing something similar. They were claiming that Taylor may have tried to befriend Matty Healy to change his mind about his misogyny and racism based off her song lyrics. I also don't get why her bestie, Jack Antonoff, is still actively working with 1975. I guess that's an issue for another time.

The reason I don't agree with the argument that Taylor is winning due to "cultural significance" is because they don't seem to give any other artists awards for that reason. I think everyone just needs to admit the Grammys are a sham and that what determines who wins likely is a result of industry factors behind the scenes none of us are ever remotely aware of so we can end the discourse for good and stop caring in the future.

right like lana is as culturally significant as taylor. swift has reiterated that lana was and still is a huge impact on her music since 1989-present (hence why wildest dreams sounds like “without you”) sza has also broken boundaries and racial barriers in the music industry and should’ve won at least one of the major categories (aoty, bpva) instead of a small racialized categories. Idk about that when Jon Batiste won AOTY in 2022 over Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, Doja Cat, Lady Gaga, Kanye West and Justin Bieber. I think the voting system is probably skewed. It's not so much about "cultural significance" but rather "economic impact." TS sells records and ultimately, that is what the industry will reward. Loved that win for Jon Batiste, but I think he won thanks to a split vote.

i also think it’s important to note that taylor swift’s fans can be bad for her image as well. they’re known for being disrespectful, overeager, and even threatening. they have proven time and time again that they don’t show any respect for the artist they claim to adore. they speculate every aspect of her personal life and treat her like their content creation machine. remember the time so many people showed up to SOMEONE ELSE’S wedding because she was there?

@@danielamv222 I actually see more Swifties praising and obsessing over joe Alwyn than harassing him. So many refused to accept that they broke up last April, were calling him ‘Daddy’ when she started dating Healy and a lot of Swifties have a weird parasocial relationship with him, like he’s their boyfriend too. Although they have been making fun of the huge wealth disparity present in their relationship since 2022. It’s very strange. @@amarachiisaac9420I’ve been on swiftie twitter because I was confused as to why so many swifties hate him and it’s so interesting. They basically believe that because he was a private person he was an evil abusive guy that was ashamed of Taylor and never let her leave the house. Anytime he’s pictured out which is pretty rare they attack him and say he was basically lying about being introverted. They flip the script so quickly because when the two were together they praised his want for privacy and said he was protecting her. Now that they are no longer together they switched to the narrative that he somehow hated her. I think they’re more so upset that because their relationship was so private they weren’t able to live through her which is something they need. So they blame him for that. Great video, Kayla. This is a really nuanced take that I agree wholeheartedly with. While I believe some of the criticism around Taylor is misogynistic and not her fault, it doesn’t mean valid criticisms don’t exist that we can hold her accountable for. For the past year or so, there’s been a culture of generalisation in the fandom, with Swifties dismissing all criticism (even when valid and constructive) of Taylor as misogynistic. It’s out of control and feels very culty.

Those people who mislabel all critique of Taylor can't really handle their idol being flawed. I've noticed many feminists are informed on sexism, yet still fall pray to celebrity worship. When it comes toTaylor and the Grammys, yes she isn't the issue, however, she has become the poster child of the issues that many have with the Grammys. For example, they refuse to give Beyonce Album of the Year and claim she doesn't need it and say everything she does is a big deal. While at the same time having no issue with giving Taylor her 4th win in this categories. And at the same time, she's also the same person who sells a million copies in her first week everytime she makes an album and will probably do the same for this next album and for Reputation TV & Debut TV. But for some reason those things aren't held against Taylor the same way Beyonce's accolades are held against her. And with Midnights winning, I've heard people say she won cuz she had a big year. Fair, but so did SZA, SOS was number 1 for 10 weeks and Snooze was on the chartd for an entire year. So what exactly are the metrics for winning Album of the Year

If she's Grammy's darling..why was she never awarded Song of the year which awards songwriters? ...while Taylor is notoriously praised for her song writing ability. Beyoncé has 32 awards the most awarded person in Grammy history never won Album of the year category...whereas Taylor who has won 14 Grammy's has never won Song or Record of the year categories when she's clearly eligible for winning those categories long ago.

Right on the nose, the problem is over exposure. I have liked Taylor ever since I was little when my baby sister used to hog the radio in the car to play her Red CD 5x over. I found a lot of personal connection to Clean, and Nothing New, and Cowboy Like Me (jeez I ADORE that song 😭) I liked her music, I liked her choice to re-record albums and that was that. Then it felt like last year she just had this ginormous, mega, epic boom in popularity. First it was Midnights announcement, then the Eras Tour, then the new re-recordings, then her breakup with Joe, then her fling with Matty Healy? (Still don’t see the appeal of that man but that’s beside the point). It just went on and on and on. Culminating in the Grammies album announcement (totally nothing wrong about that imo) and then her whole carbon emissions scandal (totally think she’s an entitled billionaire for that one). It was so easy liking Taylor Swift when the reach of her involvement in my life was CD replays and the occasional music video binge but now I hear stuff about her every single second of every day, and whilst I really do not want to discredit her artistry this constant buzz around her just seems a tiny eeny bit undeserving. Or maybe celebrity culture is really not good for anyone who knows.

I didn't mind her singing about her exes at the start of her career when she was singing about older and often more famous men, but now she's one the most famous people on the planet releasing a whole album presumably about Joe Alwyn, a relatively unknown indie movie actor. Just feels like punching down, sicking her millions of fans on him for the high crime of... wanting a private life? Not being ready to marry her? Like people are so quick to forget: he is a *real* person, not a character, not a villain. A lot of her fans seem to share her entitlement and self-victimizing (and this is coming from a fan who defended her during the whole 🐍 debacle).

Like “Hits Different” only being on a Target CD (but not Target vinyl), “You’re Losing Me” only being on a CD available AT the tour ONLY at the stops she announced it, none of which were online. Only SOME of the “3am tracks” being on the “Til Dawn” edition. LIKE THERE IS NO *COMPLETE* “Midnights” album!!!!! So wtf did the Grammys vote for?!?! I also don't hate her but I am tired of not liking Swift being equated with being a bad feminist, anti-women, or a "pick me". Also, if she is as strategic as people claim she is, she should take a break. Overexposure is dangerous, it makes people turn on you. It happens with actors all the time, it is gonna happen to her.

If I remember correctly, Taylor was really hated around 2016, because of that drama with Kim K claiming Taylor agreed to be mentioned in Kanye’s song Famous and then complained it (then it turned out that the leaked phone call in which Taylor “agreed” to being in the song was altered to make it look like that). So Taylor was already hated by a lot of people at the time of the 2016 election. Endorsing Hilary probably would have backfired because of all the people who disliked her.

i totally agree with what you said about taylor it really has become overexposure to the point where i’m getting to the point where i was when i started listening to her music which is absolutely ashamed to admit it. i have gotten to a point where i’m gonna just listen to her music maybe try and go to a concert here and there in the future because all the easter eggs and surprise announcements are getting out of hand. maybe it’ll all die down once the eras tour has wrapped and she finishes her re-records but who knows. i don’t know if i’ve just gotten older it’s more obvious to me but the way that her releases have trully become so centered on selling soooooo many physical copies with all the different variants for vinyl and cds that i’m sick of it. fans shouldn’t have to buy 4 or 5 cds just to get every song for an album physically. i don’t think she should’ve announced the album at the grammys it just took away from everything else and she shouldn’t have won for midnights it’s far from her best work. the grammys in my opinion don’t respect the artist who are putting out good shit and if they don’t make a shift in how they function people won’t care about them anymore.

I feel like yes, the Eras Tour was a big part in making Taylor "safe" to enjoy publicly, but also like.... she announced Midnights MONTHS before announcing the Eras Tour, and nobody had any idea that the theme of the Eras Tour would be what it was, a tour that allowed every form of fan, big or small, to find something to enjoy. Midnights broke records well before the tour came along, so there was definitely a precedent set beforehand. Personally, I think that was ATW10 and the short film, which raised many people's respect for her as an artist and person, in addition to Folklore and Evermore. I know this isn't exactly the point of the video lol, but I do think it points to a more gradual climb back to the top rather than a sudden shooting back out of nowhere, which some people who don't keep up with her as closely might have thought it was. Definitely don't think Midnights deserves AOTY despite its hype tho, she's made better, and has the potential to make better. It would have been nice for her to get that historic win for a better product.
@cardiganweather
@cardiganweather 11 ай бұрын
This is my take exactly. None of this happened overnight. Folklore and Evermore raised a bar and surprised fans, critics, and casual listeners. Her rerecordings were successful and nostalgic, and Anti Hero made her music and persona appealing to the general public just like Blank Space did back in the day. Midnights was huge. Then the tour built on that foundation. And as much as I love Midnights, I was disappointed it won AOTY. I think other albums were more deserving, and I think she's capable of making a better album in the future that would've been deserving.

She's only a couple years younger than me and when she started out I absolutely hated country music. I still don't like it but also at the time I was anti-American media and everything I was playing, watching, reading or listening to was coming from Britain, Germany, France, Taiwan, Korea and Japan. Reputation is when she caught my attention, and I've been a fan since, as in her music is part of the sea of albums I own. I'm not very much into pop culture, I don't stream music (have ethical reasons for hating Spotify), I don't watch TV (atm all we are subscribed to is Crunchyroll, and my husband and daughter are the ones who use that) So this year is the first time I've watched the Grammys, and honestly I really don't have an opinion on that. However there are a lot of artists that were there that I had never heard of including SZA, so I'm grateful for the introduction to new people to check out. I am way more into law and politics though, so I didn't even know she was dating Travis Kelce, until the right wing fools started making a thing out of it. From our point of view this is all really hilarious. She's a popstar, He's a football player them being a couple isn't really a shocking development. The right wing acting like it's a years long psyop from the "deep state" is utterly ridiculous. I also want there to be a cease-fire, but not once had it occurred to me that celebrities should be making public statements about it. I told my husband the other night that I hope she has the state of the art security team because while their delusions are amusing, there are dangerous people in that group and I don't put fuck all past them. I also know absolutely nothing about sports, I don't even know anybody who cares about sports IRL not even my Trump supporting parents, aunts and uncles. So you can imagine how hard I rolled my eyes when hearing an uncle who knows nothing about sports & nothing about Taylor Swift rail on and on about this conspiracy theory. I mean honestly, he knows nothing about politics either but... As for her jet usage while I understand & agree private jets are bad for the environment, I definitely wouldn't want to be in an airport where Taylor Swift is.

You mentioned this briefly with the privet jet, but it's a larger thing - Taylor is a fucking billionaire! And she mostly hordes this money. There is no "Taylor Swift foundation", there are no charitable causes she's part of. Giving money away could have been a way stronger political stand than endorsing Joe Biden, but she doesn't do it. She likes the status of a billionaire, and the fact that she doesn't give that away for any cause (except paying well for her workers, which is nice, but I would assume not that significant for a billionaire), makes me feel that whatever views she has, she doesn't care about them that much

It's also a little lazy to put together a "deep dive" into the stuff going on and not mention the very commonly shared fact that Taylor has only been on screen during NFL games for like 2:30 minutes the WHOLE SEASON. Or that she is not near the top of the list of people who use private jets, despite being on a world tour, and that she donate 2x her usage in carbon credits. And it's not like she is someone where public flights are even a POSSIBILITY. Also, the guy who has been "tracking" her also uses a private jet, and got upset when he found out one of the jets he was tracking she had sold months ago. So clearly it wasn't about "calling out private jet usage", it's stalking. It sounds like you just repeated random TikTok's you saw, and did no actual research. Or even bothered to read the comments that usually show up.

You can't constantly complain about Taylor while hyperfixating on every little detail of her life and I'm tired of the hypocrisy of it all. Firstly all the Grammy drama, when nobody cared that JAY Z literally dissed his peers when accepting Dr. Dres Grammy yet we talk about Taylor not greeting Celine, also the whole album announcement "drama" when as was pointed out countless artists have done and yet again nobody bats an eye when Bey anounced her new album in an ad played AT the Superbowl when it was supposed to be Ushers night. Secondly why the hell are people so obsessed with celebrities speaking out about Palestine? How does that benefit anyone and why are we singling out Taylor? And why do we want Taylor to speak out inevitably giving her MORE press when we complain about her being overexposed and shoved down our throats? Same thing about this whole private jet debacle, why are we singling out Taylor when literally every other celebrity does the same thing?

I think one of the things with Taylor that sets her apart from many of her contemporaries like Ariana, Selena and the like, is her universal appeal. She’s someone who has shown that she’s open to experimenting with different genres, whether it be country with her first 3 albums, more country infused rock or singer songwriter music with RED, 80s tinged pop with 1989, darker more r&b influenced pop with reputation, folk music with the folklore and evermore duology and modern pop with Lover and Midnights, she’s able to appeal to an incredibly broad audience, and she’s someone who’s been so ubiquitous within pop culture for such a large part of her career that even if people want to start listening to her music now, 11 albums and close to 20 years into her career, they can feel comfortable doing so because they aren’t going in blind. Even if you’re an admitted Taylor Swift hater, you’ve heard at least 4 or 5 of her songs, if not more, and not even just the huge. Her image and brand has also always been one that’s easily marketable to a worldwide/global audience which I also think has helped her achieve the massive status that she has right now. I think the tide really turned on her when folklore and evermore came out and REALLY when RED (Taylor’s Version) came out because self admitted antis listened to the albums and were like “wait…. She’s.. actually a really good somgwriter.”, which is something that fans have known for years

For example, if she would've got up on stage at the grammy's and spoke about politics or cried about how the award should've went to someone else, people would've still be mad. Especially those who already dislike her. No matter which way you spin it, there will be a bunch of people who love her and a bunch of people who hate her. She is a human being and she's going to do what humans do. They win some and they lose some. The only difference is her life is put out there for the whole world to see. While there are legit things to critique Taylor for, I feel like some of the hate she gets is ridiculous. In hindsight, maybe the Grammys wasn’t the correct venue to do a surprise announcement of her album, especially since she said in Tokyo her other plan was to do it there, as she announced with her last two re-records at prior shows. Granted, she did announce Midnights at the VMAs, but the climate of that awards show is different. But the way people were reading into her intentions with Celine was ridiculous…maybe she was overwhelmed, maybe she didn’t want to startle Celine, etc. And in addition to the fact that very few artists use their acceptance speeches to shout out their presenters or other artists, I don’t even consider the two in the same league. Taylor is very much a songwriter who also sings, while Celine is a vocalist who doesn’t write music. Both are valid, and Taylor showed throughout the night, as she does at many award shows, how supportive she is of her peers by dancing and singing along. And it’s ridiculous to fixate so much on her that both her overreactions and there being no reaction (like at the Golden Globes) mean she’s the Devil with some underhanded, selfish motive to call attention to herself. She really can’t win.

2:50 I heard that as "commie-loving boyfriends," LOL. I'm not sure if the subtitle of "Kanye-loving" is correct, but both make sense, IMO. 😆 Anyhow, I was already a casual fan of Swift's music from her Red and 1989 albums, but I've grown to like her music even more through her most recent 2 albums, her Eras concert film in IMAX (more for her showmanship and stamina than the entire catalogue on display), and the flippancy at which her existence triggers far right freaks.

i don't like her anymore, but i used to love her, even through reputation, and never really had a 'hater' phase. it was actually the lover album that made me like her less, specifically because of the song "you need to calm down". it just felt really hollow and like she was trying to make a pro-LGBT song, that ended up being all about herself. and this was also when i started becoming more aware of her brand of feminism and politics and it's a type of white-centred politics that just puts a dirty taste in my mouth now whenever it's praised too much as being so progressive. and that's a problem i see a lot now, any time you criticise her, her fans will accuse you of just hating women. which, no, that's not the case. she was absolutely a victim of misogyny throughout her career. people talked about her as if she were the devil for writing about her exes. but she's not immune to criticism, no one is.

I’m not a fan of her music, it’s not my cup of tea. That doesn’t make me ‘not like other girls’ I don’t judge others for their music choices. Surely there’s no issue with not being a fan of hers if it’s just down to personal preference 🤷‍♀️

I agreed. Disliking someone's music or being critical of their actions isn't sexist. Hating on her for authentically sexist reasons, or because she's popular with girls, would be sexist.

I have been a Swiftie since 2020, the year that folklore and evermore were released and I have to say to surprise no one like her music. I kinda think the overexposure part is kinda not that much of a thing because if people were tired of Taylor, then why is it when she releases an album, it’s a big deal. Of course i have criticisms (I don’t think 1989 should have won aoty over TPAB and me is a terrible song) but she seems like a very good person and fun to be around and part why I started to like her was her support of lgbtq+ rights and becoming more political aware. Also, I’m a massive American football fan (i root for the Washington Commanders formally named football team formally named name redacted) and I’m super cool with her being there because it’s actually good when women like American football and if you’re heterosexual and you want your significant other likes what you like it’s good. And on the question on who should the Super Bowl half time show, it’s Paramore for me.

as someone who doesn't live in North America (and is therefore not directly exposed to the culture), I find it mind-blowing how people dissect and criticise Taylor's every move. She's certainly a flawed human being like the rest of us, but I feel like people are just unnecessarily cruel to her. She's very strong for being able to deal with all that without going insane.

So excited that you posted this video! 😄I've just posted my own Taylor Swift conspiracy video so we're on the same wavelength at the minute (not that the whole world hasn't noticed Taylamania already), although you went down a completely different route to me. I'm in awe of how many great topics you touched on in just 20 minutes, the Grammy's is definitely an interesting one. Seen a lot of backlash about the alleged snub of Celine Dion and I think you're right - announcing a new album amongst her peers rather than fans when it has already been 'her moment' all year definitely can't have gone down well with everyone in the room. And I have to agree - a relationship PR stunt all to support Biden is definitely far fetched 🤣 Fabulously interesting video as always 👏

i am not saying this as a fan of taylor, but i am saying this as a human with morals. to start off, her grammy announcement. she did not announce her album to surprise everyone else in that room. she did it because its a major cultural event in the music industry that she knows many of her fans, diehard or casual, will most likely be watching. it is completely normal for her to want the most amount of people possible to hear her art that she creates. also, about her bringing lana up on stage. LANA IS FEATURED ON THE ALBUM. to add to the grammys thing, how did taylor make a bad choice by looking surprised??? she broke an insane record, and also, SHES ALLOWED TO BE PROUD OF THE ART SHE CREATES. finally, i think its just wrong to say that everything she does is calculated. i fully admit, she is not like anybody else, in the sense that she has reached a level of success that very few other people have in the past. but that doesnt mean that she is not still a human. we all know shes a billionaire, we all know that her day to day life is nothing like anybody elses, but saying that was "manufactured in a lab" or that everything she does is "a calculated choice" is truly just degrading.

I have proudly loved taylor swift for years and I am so glad she's on top right now and getting the appreciation she deserves but honestly I am so so terrified that this level of overexposure is going to break soon and everyone will start hating her again😭😭 I mean it's the only possible pathway because it doesn't seem like she could go up from here. that being said, as a massive massive fan that's going to the eras tour in a few days (!!!) SZA deserved aoty, announcing an album at the grammys was a bit unclassy of her (doing it at the vmas was fun but the grammys is a different environment and made the night about herseld) and worst of all she needs to stop using that private jet for non-essential flights😭😭 I love her so so much but tbh it's been getting easier and easier these past few months to weaken my parasocial relationship with her because of her actions/lack of action and the amount of fans that I see that just blindly support everything she does and celebrating that she's a billionaire like what??? this is not different because she's taylor swift??? growing up and realising that she's little miss capitalist has been such a harsh blow to my morals😭😭 love your music though queen🫶🫶

I always feel bad for the main girl. Taylor has been the main girl on again and off again since the start of her career. She blows up to such a degree people start to feel bitter. Because people are rightfully annoyed at the over exposure they wrongfully began to look for reason to knock her off the pedestal she was placed on. No matter who the main girl is in the moment two things will always be true, they will undergo massive scrutiny, than they will be dethroned by a new women who has to suffer from the same fate. Our culture loves casual misogyny. Loves to dehumanize women, either they are a deity or a demon. They can never just exist.

Excellent video!! I must say that I have never gotten in such heated debates about any other artist or celebrity than about Taylor Swift. People who I am close with think she is SO genuine and "the most authentic" in everything she portrays, when I and others can see how clearly calculated it is. Celebrities do not present their genuine self and I totally accept that, but she has built her whole brand on her "authenticity" and an underdog persona, which is very hypocritical.

i'm gonna have to disagree with taylor making cultural impact. I think she makes a huge commercial impact but a cultural impact would be like everyone suddenly wearing off the runway avant garde costumes after lady gaga got big. or emo music having a resurgence after billie eilish got famous. or michael jackson making music videos high budget and treating them like movies. taylor just sells a lot of albums and a lot of tickets, but shes not changing the culture in any way. its like how in 1995 Hootie and the Blowfish had the highest selling album of the year, but would anyone say they made a cultural impact? i would bet most people born after 2000 don't even know who they are.
