Strength is the purpose of the dovetail joint. I'd predict that as moisture expands the wood the joints will get stronger. Unless the box gets out of square, which shouldn't happen as long as the frames are on the rails, I can't think of a reason to nail or screw them - except to sleep better at night. The window is an idea too good to ignore. I'm building a Layens now and will be adding a window or drawer before putting the bees in.

Thank you for this video! I’ve been making my own cover and landing boards and buying unassembled boxes. The price of hives has increased dramatically. This is a decent hive at an affordable price and if you hadn’t reviewed it, I wouldn’t even know about these! I just ordered one!

I have several of these boxes and found them to be pretty good boxes and the frames could use a little bit more attention for sure. I did glue the knob on the window panel. Mine came with screws and nails i guess it depends on the boxing day. Frames needed more wax but i have plenty so i just double coated them. No glass came with the boxes but I think the newest ones do. Nice review thanks.

Good morning Jason☕️ I am not raising bees yet but I have the physical book in hand to alway look back on. The vevor hive has been looked at by other bee keepers on YT and it is an eye catcher. Congrats on the green light to sell queens👍🏼

Yeah, I would much prefer the observation window on the front or back sides....or none at all. I'm not a fan of the black foundation but since they have a heavy coat of wax, I can accept it for the price. Regarding the slop in the entrance reducer, I save old mite strips. You can cut and wedge in to plug the gaps or staple them on the outside as a panel.
@JCsBees

I like the windows but I don't like not having a handhold on the sides. I actually prefer plastic foundation but it has to have a good was coating for the bees to respond correctly to it. Nice tips of the reducer, thanks!

I have 2 of these hives, they are the original design with no plexiglass... They are ok, but, they definitely do not wax treat the wood properly. After 1 summer it's down to bare wood.. I am amazed both colonies survived the winter with how bad the joints warped once the wax weathered away.
@JCsBees

To properly wax dip the woods needs to be hot so the pours are open. I wonder if Vevor is just dipping at room temperature. I used my thumbnail and it does scrape right off. Kinda sad really!

Decent box for new hobby keep. Not sure how well it would overwinter in Ohio. I prefer insulated hives.

Great review Jason. I don't care for the observation window and the quality of the box and frames suggest it won't last long.

Given a choice between a window and a handle, I'd pick the handles. Windows are a silly gimmick. Given a choice between wax-dipping and glued joints, I'd pick glued joints. In my experience, some decent exterior paint protects the wood better than wax.

I bought a Vevor honey extractor and it is really nice. So I am pleased with Vevor products. Are the sides, front and back pieces of wood glued together instead of 1 solid piece of wood?

That's an amazing price for a bee hive...I think I'll get one to show off my bees to friends and relatives...I'll just wait for a swarm. 116 dollars...hell, I spend the much taking my wife out to eat, or buying a couple days worth of food, or filling a gas tank. Vevor is almost giving it away...especially in today high prices. How in the world do they pay for overhead and labor...wow.

I bought a complete hive from Vevor about a month and a half ago. We’ve had some rain and hot weather and it’s starting to separate at the dovetails on the top cover and bottom. I assumed it was nailed but it’s not. Just a heads up.

I recall seeing a video you did a few years back where you talked about the hassles of having to be inspected and certified to sell queen. This might seem like a waste of time but it seem like a lot of the queens you buy if you are not careful who you buy them from are duds. I woul much rather know the person is doing things right.
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 6 ай бұрын
Yep, I am not a fan of the state program at all but I play their game every year. I like my inspector but it's puzzling to me how someone with less experience in beekeeping can tell me I'm allowed to sell bees. If your buying queen that are duds and the place you bought them from is not replacing them, move on to another dealer. Best of luck!

Hi Jason, I have a question. I just pulled my honey supers and have a bumper crop for my limited young market. Since the bees still have strong food sources can I put on new foundations to kinda force them to draw comb for the future instead of putting the extracted frames back and having more honey right away.
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 4 ай бұрын
Hello Phil, Congrats on the bumper crop! I don't see any issue with you idea but I do think i'd set the extracted frame out for the bees to clean before storing them away. Good luck!!

The inner covers depth is not deep enough....a good inner cover will have a depth that can take feeding bee patties so that the bees can crawl on top of the patty to remove hive beetle larvae.
