Overall, it's a well made video! Most concepts are clearly explained in layman language. A "boring" equation "2+2=4" becomes very interesting and hopefully audience can appreciate the axiomatic approach of doing mathematics. There are 2 suggestions for this video: 1) The fifth postulate (Induction Principle) should better be presented explicitly. The importance of this last postulate should be elaborated a bit more. 2) Recursive definition for addition using the two rules (mentioned at 10:16) is worth to be explained in more detail. The concept of recursive definition can be explored. It's not that trivial at all as it seems to be. Many people mix it up with induction. Even In many mathematics textbooks, sloppy proof of recursive definition based on induction is presented. Actually the definition of addition can be done explicitly without using the concept of recursive definition. The two rules mentioned in the definition of addition (10:16) then becomes a theorem: the explicit definition of addition implies the two rules as properties (Existence). Moreover, there is one and only one way to define the addition so as to satisfy the two rules (10:16) (Uniqueness).

But there are conjectures that do fit in. Example, the Collatz conjecture. You just need to define plus, minus, product, quotient, remainder within integers. From here you can define prime numbers and go for Goldbach's conjecture and twin prime conjecture. But out of all these conjectures you chose Riemann hypothesis which probably can't be stated within definitions in Peano axioms.

Alright... what about 3+3? Let's see if you're really smart now!
@8bit_pineapple5 жыл бұрын
Well, 3 = S(2) don't you see? Which means, 3+3 = 3+S(2) , but we know from our 2nd axiom of addition _a + S(b) = S(a+b)_ So, 3+S(2) = S(3+2) We defined 2 as S(1), so substituting into the above = S(3+S(1)) Reapplying axiom 2 = S(S(3+1)) And 1 is S(0), so = S(S(3+S(0))) Reapplying axiom 2 = S(S(S(3+0))) This time we can apply our first Axiom of addition, that a+0=a so this is equal to S(S(S(3))) And we've pretty much arrived at our answer. 3+3 = S(S(S(3))) Though, I think in the video we defined the funny symbol "4" to be S(3) , so we can rewrite this as 3+3 = S(S(4)) To get at a shorter answer we can pick a symbol to represent S(4), I reckon "5" is a good pick, so 3+3 = S(5) and finally, let's pick a symbol for the successor of "5". I think the obvious choice is the Face with Tears of Joy emoji. So 3+3=😂 ... quick maffs

I like your argument for why axioms/proofs are important. It's the exact reason I enjoyed studying math in college.
@adnanbezerra60148 ай бұрын
what I think to be the most wonderful here is that, on its basic principles, mathematics shows itself to be pure metaphysics. the principle of non-contradiction is also the basis of good metaphysics. but, if you change it and all of a sudden you decide that x CAN BE different than x, that is, you accept contradiction, then the whole basis of reality crumbles. that's how you end up discovering idealism, which is contrary to realism, and then you understand why the world is currently a big mess - that's because our philosophy, the way we see the meta-physic universe, accepts such idealism which clearly contradicts the world's actual reality. all hail Aristotle. the universals are real. that's it. mathematics is truly marvelous. I miss studying it.

I dropped my logic and foundations class back in the day cause i just couldn't grasp logic. But you did a pretty good job of explaining the fundamentals of this proof. Thank you.

I love that you used the natural numbers to define the rules of the natural numbers
@thomaswilliams47555 жыл бұрын
For anyone interested, there’s a programming language/ automated proof-checker that allows you to prove these sorts of things called Agda. You can define the natural numbers, equality and addition directly in the language, and go onto write proofs that the language itself will verify the correctness of.

Our two axioms with regard to "=" are: 1. a+0 = a 2. a+S(b)=S(a+b) When writing #2, we only have one "+" axiom to build on ("a+0=a"), but we don't have a general axiom for addition. So, in my poor brain (which hasn't been in a math class in 25 years), I see "S(a+b)" as undefined unless b=0 - at least in terms of this proof.
@hasanalarbash40575 жыл бұрын
You can recursively apply the second axiom until you have the first one as Tibees did. 2+s(1) = s(2+1) --> s(2+s(0)) --> s(s(2+0)) --> s(s(2)) --> s(3) --> 4 We have b=0 on the fourth step and we can do it for any 2 numbers that we have if we want.

A lesson of axioms, questions and "what is a number?". Take it a step further and you could prove that a natural number is a whole number, determining whether anything in the real world can ever actually be "whole". If I ask someone to count how many chairs are at a table, they first need to determine what is a chair.

Your original video was amusing not because of its content but because of your apt juxtaposition of it with contemporary humor and how it seems to have prognosticated modern meme-culture. This video is amusing because at 0:48, Larry leans back to relax.

It always bends my brain, to think of trying to define something as fundamental as 2+2=4. It just came to my mind that, paradoxically, something with more elements, something more complicated on the surface, can be easier to explain, like the mechanics of movement, etc. That's because there's more wiggle room. You have a broader set of things you can define, and you can explain different interations. There is no such wiggle room when you get to such fundamental ideas such as 2+2=4. You try to explain in fundamentally in your own mind, and you end up thinking "...but..but..it just IS". What a trip, huh? As you point out, we have to define the basis, the fundamental building blocks of math to know of it. I've started watching your vids more over the past few days, and they are an utter delight. Your vids are the ones I've watched most as I've finally gotten back to math after such a long hiatus, due to the metnal strains of the pandemic and such. Thanks for inpsriing me to get back to my math!
