Agwu Mba came into the Den requesting N15 million for 10% equity in his mobile-based delivery and courier service business, LumberSwift app.
While his rich valuation might have posed a challenge with the Lions, one thing they all agreed upon was his problem-solving skills. But would this be enough to sway the investors?
Lions’ Den Nigeria is a business reality show that gives budding entrepreneurs across Nigeria the chance to pitch their business to 5 successful Nigerian investors, referred to as Lions.
These Lions are looking to give back to the society and help Nigerian fulfil their dreams and ambitions. As such, if they see the potential in the entrepreneurs’ business, idea or products, they will invest in the business, in exchange for some equity in the business.

Debt returns at 200% is extremely high, but I'm sure with the right number & ACTIVE subscriber base he should be able to scale. Because he is not really spending much on Inventory or liabilities like bike maintenance, etc. He's only going to spend a lot more money on DIGITAL & OFFLINE MARKETING to subscribers & onboarding of logistic bikes & buses. And most importantly, a full comprehensive insurance (or else the riders might cause him problems with damages & thefts). And he will need an in-house full time software developers who can secure his platform from hacking.

The deal could have been better - without knowing any additional details. However, the 200% debt return + 20% equity the VCs (lions) are asking for is the CoE aka cost of equity. For a high risk businesss, such as this, the cost of equity has to be high. It is basically the consolation that the investors get for being brave enough to invest in and believe in something that hasn't really shown satisfactory returns yet.

Also, when you think of competing businesses, marketing needs to be solid - meaning more cash. To bootstrap this kind of business will not be as easy.

Actually they are not very hungry. The guy thought it through. They accepted to run the company for 2years to an international level, do all registration ranging from insurance to other licenses that's why they need 51% for the first 2years to be the face of the company cos they believe the app will work They are really offering service to the guy but getting paid with profit. Its a win win for both parties and in two years they are out with 10% each and the company will worth more.

I agree. That's way too much premium to pay to have two Lions on your board. Paying back 100% after two years is like paying 50% simple interest rate per annum. Then you lose 20% equity on top. Bad deal in opinion. If any bank were willing to give him money they wouldn't take more than 35% interest p.a and no equity lost.
