Okay, so it’s 2019 & people living in a 1st world country still aren’t aware that Black people literally have different skin & hair that needs care much different than less melanated skin & straighter hair? But even if this weren’t the case & someone wanted to be happy about seeing a Black doctor, how does this hurt anyone?

A few comments are repeating what other derms have said (i.e. eye creams and essential oils). So even derms have different opinions and philosophies when it comes to skincare. I would love to see a discussion among several derms to see how they address each others differing views. Personally I find some derms are more conservative in their recommendations, telling you to eliminate all potential irritants and using only products that have ingredients that have lab tested efficacy, while others are more flexible with experimentation and seeing if a certain ingredient might work for you when it doesn't work for others.

Not only is the acid mantle removed, but also the stratus corneum, the good bacteria, and the natural oils that moisturise and protect our skin are all removed. If you're so scared of some ambiguous 'dirt' gathering on your face then why would you wash off the protective layers? Our skin replaces cells and layers all the time, it cleans and rejuvenates itself. What people really need is a good lifestyle, with optimal sleep, a healthy diet and less stress.

It IS interesting! I've noticed a few things. 1) Their skincare routines are never as elaborate as the average skincare enthusiast's. 2) They often don't take small details about products or methods nearly as seriously as we do. They seem to be more relaxed and laid back about skincare, if that makes sense. Maybe it's because they know which ingredients really work, and also know that they can have procedures done at any time that we don't have access to, which have an even greater impact on skin appearance.

I bet they watched Susan Yara's reaction videos and wanted to do that but can't...Think about it, if you have them invite a celebrity to do this and then bring on a dermatologist to (politely) criticize their routine, no one's gonna wanna do it in the future (and it'd kinda be an asshole move). I don't think aging is going to change for this generation, as one commenter in the video suggested it might. Retinol has been around for quite a while now, especially among the rich and famous, and it hasn't caused them to age any less quickly. Fillers and Botox make people look different, but not younger. I think aging will continue as it always has because it's an internal process you can't change with external measures. Also, this derm is so smart yet friendly at the same time. I love her. A lot of doctors come across as arrogant. She's like a breathe of fresh, glowy air.

HB, 1.) Would love to hear a derm's opinion on actives in moisturizers (ex. Moisturizer with vitamin c) and how effective they are. 2.) Am curious if derm would recommend using 2 products within a skincare's line? For ex. Peter Thomas Roth and Olehendrickson both have vitamin c lines that include a serum & a moisturizer, should/could that vitamin c serum & moisturizer be used at same time? Or are they intended as options for using that ingredient in a routine and it's up to buyers to decide what cocktail of products to use?

I am 44 and have no wrinkles. I have taken care of my skin for the past several years. I live in a humid and tropical country so we don’t need super thick moisturizers but we need effective sunscreen, even when indoors but sit next to a window. And that’s what I do. I also use a sheet mask three times a week, which is really just soaking the skin in serum. I use different masks, depending on the state of my skin. Some days I am extra stressed, some days are okay, and some days are extra hot and I’m always oily, and adjust my sheet masking accordingly.

She said it’s not good to use retinol and vitamin c at the same time but the other dermatologist from the previous video said it’s a great thing to do!!! I don’t know who’s right I’m confused! Help please

I think it's better to use vitamin c in the morning and retinol at night at first (if u want to use both), and later if everything goes well try to do both in the same routine. If you get irritation then stop immediately and rinse it off. I think some people can handle while some can not. It's all about how much your skin can tolerate.

I think both are saying the same thing. You can use them together but not at the same time (ie mixing your retinol and vitamin c products together). Splitting up when you use each (one at night and one in the morning) is perfectly fine!

biwchin *-* it’s great to use retinol at night and vitamin c in the morning but my question is what happens if u using them together because she said they harm each other effectiveness and the other dermatologist said they make each other more effective... it’s not about tolerance, let’s say my skin can tolerate it than what do I do

momomahou the other dermatologist from the previous video said it’s better to use them at the same time, at the same routine I’ve just watched that, she said layering them on each other while this dermatologist said it’s better not to

Love this new series from Harpers Bazaar! I really like that they use different dermatologists. Dr Henry is so luminous, excited to react to the these comments, and has such a nice voice I’d subscribe to her in a heartbeat.

Your skin is not her skin, so be careful! Do what your skin can handle. Once per day is plenty, and generally using retinol in the morning before you go outside and expose yourself to the sun is not recommended.

I’m always careful. Have been using tretinoin for a long time. I think introducing a weaker retinol some mornings with plenty of sunscreen on top will be fine. If it’s not, I will stop 😊

@@littlemisschatterbox4595 Nice! I only recently started using a pretty gentle an over the counter retinol. I hope to work my way up to tretinoin one day. Take care and keep slathering on the sunscreen! 😎

I think that you are totally ok to use it twice a day as long as it's tretinoin! I have heard that retinols deactivate with sun exposure, but tretinoin does not since it is in its purest form and doesn't have to undergo the chemical reaction that retinol does to convert itself to tretinoin. Most people assume that it makes you sensitive to sun in the morning, but it just makes you sensitive overall, which is why you need sunscreen whenever you use acids or retinol, whether morning or night! :)

awww she's so nice!! i wouldn't mind going to a derm like her. i feel like a lot of the time, derms don't really go in-depth with their patients and it's a very quick process. i'd mucch prefer someone who helps me understand my complicated skin and takes the time to explain stuff to me so that i can then put my knowledge to use.
