Update: Seeing as KZbin will auto delete source lists if i try to make it a pinned comment (and it being too long for the description), i've pasted it in so in a Google Docs - here it is! Sorry about that folks! docs.google.com/document/d/1qTy-uD5JLjp9zWTM0M5Bbt2vLLe_DRmYCGEnyc6QFM4/edit?usp=sharing

Great Video! Thanks for highlighting this under rated developer

I've been slowly going through VW's catalogue Iver this year, so far Dragon's Crown sticks out as my favorite gameplay-wise, Muramasa Rebirth for the art style and 13 Sentinels in the story department. Over just one year Vanillaware has become no doubt my favorite indie/small studio in the gaming medium, I hope the continue to craft their art for many more decades. Thank you for this retrospective. :)

Grimgrimoire is probably the only RTS accessible to little kids.

Vanillaware has always fascinated me. Own physical copies of Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, Dragon's Crown Pro, 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim, and GrimGrimoire OnceMore but have yet to get around to playing them. This was very informative and makes me want to finally jump into playing them.

I was browsing through Vanilla Mania! on a site that defs cannot be linked here and it reminded me to finish this video, hopefully that gets a "remake" in English too.

I kept thinking that Princess Gradriel from Princess Crown was the character Eclair from Nippon Ichi Software's games. She looks so similar! But I looked into it more, and it turns out that Nippon Ichi Software got inspiration from Princess Gradriel and it's meant to be an homage.

great video! ps. Grand Knights Kingdom - while not technically Vanillaware so it makes sense it is not included - is a reboot of Grand Knight History and quite a hidden gem on ps4. I really love that game which, being developed by ex Vanillaware employees (Tomohiko Deguchi as director), looks and feels Vanillaware 100%. Also in a way the closest foray into a vanillaware-flavoured strategy and grand strategy RPGs before Unicorn Overlord.

Epic video, Milla! Will be watching this one in full when I begin work tomorrow, but thought I'd drop a comment now while I've got a spare moment 😎

Really enjoyed this video. Just bought Unicorn Overlord and am currently playing 13 Sentinels. I’m really starting to like Vanillaware.

Very nice video! there is a lot here that I did not know about the early times that came before Vanillawares founding, I had previously learned a little of this from the art book of Dragon's Crown that came with the ps3 copy that I got. There Kamitani explains some of his personal experiences and previous tittles that lead to the creation of Dragon's Crown. For me Dragon's Crown is one of my all time favorite games, have played trough it many times and have actually bought it 4 times: once the original ps3 version and 3 times the pro, once as a digital and then twice as the "Battle hardened edition" kept one of those for myself so that I have the physical copy if something bad ever happens to my PS account(got hacked once in 2016) and gave the other to my best friend as a Christmas gift, as I knew he really loves the Sword & Sorcery genre. Cleared Unicorn Overlord yesterday and gotta say: More please! Loved every moment of it. As for those takes by western games "journalists": Kotaku can go to hell* with their prudish opinions, Dragon's Crown has near perfect character designs for an over the top fantasy game, we need a lot more games with this level of sexualization of both genders in games to flush out the prudes** and the current uglification of female characters. In my opinion that 3 dudes pick by Kamitani was really funny, those who got offended need to loosen up and have a good laugh even if the joke was at their expense. * and seems like that is where they are going what with how irrelevant they are in todays gaming scene, as gamers see them as a diseased rat that should have gone belly up a long time ago. **their takes are on the same level as the nonsense that those fundamentalist ultra-conservative Christians were ranting about some 20 years ago, just thinking about that brings to mind a certain lawyer who had a stick up his arse about GTA.

I'm sorry, did KZbin remove the sources? If so, that's messed up. Thanks for the thorough and measured look at this company's ups and downs, as usual I learned a lot!

That's weird. I posted them as a pinned comment as the list was too long to put into the description, but it seems KZbin removed that. I'll add it again - if not i'll need to think of an alternative solution. Thanks for letting me know. And thanks for watching!

its weird how tumultuous NISA and Atlus America relationships are.... then I remember... NISJ got Atlus America to localize Marl Kingdom 1.... JUST ONLY ONE! but seeing as the games are now available on steam 1-2 and Tenshi no Present.... kinda all good I guess?
