Could the hole be left over from a previous motor room lift? That's cool with the manuals.

When you talked about the modern throw away society of today, I couldn't agree more!! The number of people that throw away something and then replace it with something new when the newer thing is of inferior quality to the old item. Plus, buy cheap buy twice, (or many times in this case). Why try and cut corners with cheap rubbish when you could just install quality first time around and save time and money in the long run. Especially if the cheap thing is always going wrong. But yeah people trying to make pounds and pennies go further. Glad you didn't get crushed at the top btw :P

And then there's planned obsolescence, where things are made worse not just because of not caring or cost cutting, but on purpose, so that they'll break sooner and so that you'll have to buy something else. It's not green at all and a stop must be put to it

I was always thinking that when you go on inspection mode, the top floor availability tends to be till half only due for h&s purposes.

I can see MRL lifts being more difficult when they start to fail as it is more difficult to access the machinery to maintain it. A traditional motor room is a lot safer to work in with the equipment more easy to access (and would have a cupboard that the plans you found could be kept in). A local university's design specification (last updated 2007) states that MRL lifts are to be used as a last resort. It also wants new lifts to last 25-30 years. Unfortunately they have most of their lifts modernised by generic companies. The mat is probably an electrical insulation mat, the guidelines mentioned above require one to be placed next to each piece of control equipment.

Maybe this used to be an old traction lift and the hole allows the old lift cables to go to the motor sheave

+Xavier Lim This is a fairly new building. The lift is original to it. I don't know why there is a hole in the roof. If only there was a trap door, then I would get to see what is up there.

if those 80s 90s 1m/s schindler lifts used the MR-121 model, would have they run 2m/s if they were not Mr-221 ?

+failsingermany Ecodiscs and Gen 2s don't allow unofferise lift surfing. U need to open up the logic cabinet, put the lift into engineer mode and drive downwards into the correct position manually using the controls in the logic cabinet. Gen 2s logic cabinets use triangle key, but Ecodiscs use custom key, which is why he can't surf it.

that topic you're discussing about in the early part of this video ***** has something to do with "planned obsolescence". Items of every type are created to last for a rather short time (e.g. 10 years) so you're in the need to spend money on modernisation or - even better for them - full replacement - including replacing items that are in perfect condition. The failure of that item doesn't just happen randomly, no, the creator in fact built an "age of death" in and after a certain amount of usages, it breaks and leaves the item unusable.

+Uplifting PostTower Planned obsolescense, this especially rampant in the world of consumer electronics. Nothing is built to last anymore, modern TV's last only 5 years, and often the caps and/or the power supply that fails before anything else. Give me 70's or 80's hi-fi equipment, built to last and repairable (when you have a service manual). I guess repairability is not in the manufacture's interrest, as they want people to buy a new product as soon as possible. They also put a lot of effort in preventing you from opening the product by using evil proprietary screws and using lot's of glue so that it's almost impossible to replace a built-in battery.
